In a preseason friendly you play the way you intend to play no matter what. It's a free hit FFS, why would you compromise? In a competitive game vs City they can forego philosophy and be pragmatic but if you don't practice now to iron out the mistakes when would you do it?

Preseason matches are meant to try out new formations. Prior to the Chelsea match, man city had not won a preeason match yet no one is complaining. Many teams including man city play from the back but they have had to do it over and over again to become masters. Focus on progression not results.
Look at the teams. City have 15 players from their squad still away after the international tournaments, Chelsea are missing just Cucurella Jackson, and Palmer...
And that's the problem, this is the first team of Chelsea not showing progress, it's actually regressing as players like Tosin, James, Colwill just doesn't suit the style Maresca tries to implement - so it will end in a new flop season and/or more players being brought in that maybe can handle the style of football Maresca wants

As a Chelsea fan I was upset with the ESPN FC panel when they warned fans to limit their expectations about Poch and the team last year. They were right, it took time for the players to gel and the right thing was to go again this season with only a few additions. Unfortunately, these new directors and owners have gutted the team again. In time, the doubters will learn that the panel is right again. They are much wiser in years than some of you think.

You just highlighted the reasons why we looks miles behind the likes of MC, Liverpool or even MU and the Sputs. Pundits are just stating what they( and me) saw on the pitch. There is no way that we will be in top 4 this year as well, no team in PL is as disjointed as we are and the individual quality can't do much in this situation.

@@blueheaven4838 we have individual quality all over the pitch. Once they’re put in a system that suits them they will exceed. That’s why they were the 4th best team in the league after January while missing Reece, Lavia, Nkunku, Chilly, etc for basically all of it.

The Problem with the way Enzo Maresca is trying to play is, when we have the ball at the back, we are not playing it out but rather invite pressure. Well we don’t have players who are good with the ball at the back, so a good manager would fix that. Maresca needs to understand the importance of playing quickly otherwise it’s early curtains for him no doubt😊
It’s preseason and this is exactly what preseason is for. To figure out new systems, get players working together, improve fitness, get the summer rustiness out of the legs, and move players out on loan who won’t be at the club. It’s preseason. This is nonsense analyzing these results.
They aren't analyzing the results, they are analyzing the performances. This isn't second string players or academy lads, these players are the core of what Chelsea will wield when the league starts up in 2 weeks time, and with such short time it's truly shocking the experienced players are making so many mistakes in possession and showing they can't figure out Maresca's ideas. And the performances aren't getting better, this has been the problem for most of the friendles and a player like Tosin really feels uncomfortable playing in that defence trying to move the ball around and forward when it has never been his skillset
Nah, preseason is a preview if your team is not gonna suck when the season begins. Looking at Chelsea the tactics and the tteam are in shambles

With or without their disappointing results in preseason, Chelsea is already set up for another long season of misery. Enzo Maresca, their new manager is there on a 6 year contract and by the logic of this football club, he’s going to be there for 5 months because when the season starts and the team isn’t clicking and nothing is going their way, given the history that they’ve had with managers, they aren’t going to be patient with him as watch them sack him less than 12 months after his arrival. When people say that Pep Guardiola has ruined football and I understand that Maresca worked under him and he’s had an impact on the next generation of managers and they’re trying to set the team up to play like his, but the formation where they’re playing a back 3 with their fullbacks drifting into midfield, I don’t see how that’s going to work out for the team, I mean his experiment has flopped during preseason so far and if it’s working out, they wouldn’t be getting destroyed to a team like Celtic or lose 4-2 to Manchester City who used their 2nd string team and they’re going to play them on the opening day of the season in the premier league and by the time they play each other they’re going to have almost a full squad and there’s no way he’s going to be experimenting during the actual games in the season because many of their fans will be confused feeling as if he doesn’t know what he’s doing.
I think that the fans as a whole need to be patient with Maresca they shouldn’t turn on him already as what do people expect from an inexperienced manager give him time because when the season starts, there’s going to be expectations on him as he’ll be under a lot of pressure. He has to deliver immediate results whether it’s competing for trophies in different competitions or finishing in the top 4 in the premier league because for a club of Chelsea’s size who’ve spent billions of dollars on players, with or without injuries or an incompetent owner, they should be playing champions league football every season and we know how these guys run this club; they’re going to find a way to sack him at all costs:
