An analysis of 'MAAR DALA' from the 2002 film DEVDAS performed by Madhuri Dixit with Shah Rukh Khan.
This is an extraordinary performance by Madhuri Dixit, strongly observed, with high technical performance skill. Her dance, her subtext, her layers as a character and dancer, are just incredible. Yes, Shah Rukh is a great companion in this video, but Madhuri excels in this performance. I would love to learn more about why she made the choices and stylised actions she performed here. A haunting and intriguing performance by a mysterious and layered character.
Very subtle, sensual and visually suggestive exercise in cinematography in this scene. With very powerful and tragic music.

Devdas is from a rich family, and their family thinks of Parvati's family as beneath them because her mom used to dance (not considered respectable in Victorian India). He's hurt, and turns to alcohol and sex to compensate. Enter Chandramukhi (Madhuri Dixit). If you're familiar with the geisha in Japan, you pretty much know who Chandramukhi is. Their profession isnt sex work per se, they primarily entertain men through other means, but sex isnt necessarily off the table in their agreements.
So, Devdas goes from having been spurned by his somewhat less aristocratic neighbor/childhood love, to seeking comfort in brothels, women, and alcohol. Its a very painful story. The novel is very much a critique of the respectability norms of that time, Namely, how zealous adherence to class, societal structures, "respectability", and comforming with society often leads people to miserable outcomes. Devdas dies from alcohol, Paro is stuck in a loveless marriage, and Chandramukhi, well, given her profession, she found whatever happiness she could in Devdas.
Side note, Dola Re Dola is when Parvati invites Chandramukhi to her house for Durga Puja! Thats pretty much like inviting your hooker-friend to church service as your plus one = ).

The actress in this song is Madhuri Dixit. One of the most talented actresses who was a star in 90's and she is incredible with expressions as you already saw that and she is a trained kathak dancer which a classical dance form of India.

Madhuri's Character is a Tawaif, Tawaifs were basically professional dancers who used to organize dance shows at their house called Kotha for Thakurs, Nawabs, Landlords basically rich folks. (i think these are different from brothel but sometimes people consider it the same)

They also had clients. They entertained and served.

Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay is one of the most powerful novelist of nineteenth century from Bengal. "Devdas" is a very popular novel.

Agreed. His creations may seem dramatic, but during my grandma and great-grandma’s time, he was very popular as people could relate to those social injustices. His fictions used to challenge traditional Hindu culture and suffering of Bengali Hindu women during that time.
I read all of his novels but did not feel so emotional like my grandma felt. Unlike Rabindranath Tagor or Shakespeare, his literal works only were for victorian age or people of the early 20th century. After that, a lot of changes happened to Indian culture - thanks to these literal works.
You may want to watch a Bollywood production of Tagor’s one of the famous timeless fiction Chokher Bali. It is about a love triangle/ extramarital affair involving a beautiful young widow with a wealthy landlord of Bengal. People still can relate to this novel for its emotional tension and pain.
Madhuri Dixit plays a courtesan but falls in love, she's expressing her pain in this song knowing she can never get his love because he loves Paro. In the song Kahe Ched, is when she meets him and tries to seduce him, which IMO is even better than Maar Dala so please react to that!

Courtesans in asia in general -also as far as I know- are performers mainly and in the first place.
They call it art amongst themselves that they're artists and entertainers

Devdas is a classic Bollywood movie. There's rimance, drama, family politics, comedy, revenge, synchronised dancing. Madhuri is the queen 👑. You should watch her song 'choli ke peche kya hai' from the movie khalnayak.

Matthew you do have good taste, I have been a fan of Indian movies since the 1950's I especially love the love stories, music, and dancing, but the music dancing, and songs in Devdas, the movie, I just cannot get enough of, and also excellent choreography.
Impressive how much you were able to figure out by expressions... this is kathak a semi-classical dance form of India, performed by incredible artists, production designers, designer outfits and incredible choreography by Saroj khan. So much attention to detail from the lamp shades, chandeliers to jewelry design have gone into the making of this song... so what you see is a culmination of artists at the top of their game putting it all out.
Another song "kahe ched mohe" in the same movie choreographed by pandit birju maharaj... who is a legend in the kathak dance form is a feast to the eyes as well.... also performed by Madhuri Dixit.

I have watched this movie over 20 times and this song nearly 1000 times, but still my love for this movie and Madhuri does not finish. This movie is wonderful and Madhuri is just beautiful. Devdas has been made in Bengali and Hindi language total 7 times since the book published in 1910/1915 ish. Apart from that many other films also took essence of Devdas(Kabir Singh in 2019).
People call it author Sharatchandra Chattopadhyay's best literary work. Though he considered this as his most frustrating piece of work and sold the publisher in exchange of a bottle of Wine.

She literally lights up the screen with her presence. She was called the actress of millennium. She has the best Smile in bollywood. She resembles the yesterdays late actress, another exceptionally beautiful actress, Madhubala. It was once remarked by one of bollywoods well known and talented personality, Mr. Javed Akhtar that unfortunately for the bollywood industry, they have not been able to explore Madhuri Dixit's full potential as she's capable of so much more as an actor. She was also a muse of the famous painter late MF Hussain, who dedicated a series of paintings on her after seeing her movie 'Hum Aapke Hain Kaun' (Who am I to you) over 60 times. It is said that he was so mesmerized by her that people literally called him "Madhuri 'Fida' Hussain' (Fida means 'Fixated' or having an Affection for)

Yes, courtesans would do a dance which is called "Mujra". It wasn't just sex work, lots of eminent poets, singers and composers went to these " mehfils" . And it was a place where art forms flourished.
