Dry Fly Fishing | Scotland | River Devon | Wild Brown Trout

  • As Scotland entered COVID Phase 3, I took the opportunity to venture outside of my 5-mile radius and paid a visit the gorgeous River Devon in Clackmannanshire. I grew up on the banks of the river and spent my formative years chasing trout there with mixed results! Returning to the river as an adult is always an emotional experience. This particular evening, a caddis hatch brought dozens of picture-perfect brown trout to the surface, eager to take a dry fly. This video is a humble attempt to capture a little of what my perennial 'home water' has to offer the fly angler - dry fly fishing at its best.
    Filmed on iPhone 11 pro (with Filmic Pro) and a GoPro Hero 6
    Additional camera work (including the epic drone footage) by Andrew Herkes, Angling Scotland Media Lead.

    Very good to see another Scottish fly fishing video from yourself, and more than pleased when I realised it was filmed on my local river, the silvery Devon.
    As you said its a fickle river, somedays bubblin, somedays youd swear there were no fish in the river at all.
    Brilliant video👍

    The Devon was my local river for over 20 years, but I didn't start fly fishing (joining the DAA of course, in case Graham's lurking... ;) ) until 2009. Had to leave the Wee County in 2014 alas. Very nice to see this video. Lots of memories of a river that was 15 minutes cycle from my flat and where I learned a few things about troot. The only thing I have to say about this vid is the music and music production is, I'm sorry to say (used to be semi-pro music-maker) quite cheesy, grating, ear-fatiguing 'trip-hop' that detracts from rather than adds to, the film. Sorry to be blunt. Otherwise, yep, thank's for the memories, gorgeous footage and nice commentary.

      That's great to hear Pete! I grew up fishing the Devon by Tillicoultry/Dollar in the late 80s and 90s. Not sure if my angling has improved but the fish are definitely bigger and prettier than I remember! I've heard lots of mixed reviews since posting this video so I suspect it's a bit temperamental and probably water dependant. But I'd give it a go for sure. Really loved revisiting some of the old spots and the views of the Ochils really took me back 🙏🏼

    Great to see this video. I live abroad now, I grew up 20 minutes from the Devon, I often fished the stretch between Dollar and Tillicoultry. Not been near the place for 15+ years now and I did not recognise the beats you were on, so great to see these stretches. I always enjoyed myself on that river, beautiful scenery and all that, but to be honest, the fishing was pretty dour. Tons of small fish with the occasional fish around the 1/4 lb > 1/2 lb mark, and very very seldom something bigger. It is not really a place I would recommend to someone who is looking for a new river to check out, but a cool place to pass a few hours fishing in the evening if you live not to far away. Just my opinion. Great video, keep up the good work. Subscribed!

My best in previous years was around 1.5lb with a good few around the pound. You’ll have to come back and try it for yourself 👍🏼🎣🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

    My second comment on any of your videos and it's the same video of my previous comment but for good reason.
    Now I hope your sitting down. It's hilarious.
    So after my question about what was the best put of 2 starter sets someone my better half knows gave me fishing stuff. ( A fly rod and a spinning reel).
    I've took the advice of some people and decided to get the Shakespeare combo but the rod I was gave was a leeda 2xl 7# without a reel to use and thought well this helps with getting my son used to going with me he can play with that. So I attached about 3 metres of paracord and took him down the river Devon and let him swing away to his hearts content telling him that was his to use when we went fishing. ( Wow so much fun he loved it and so did I).
    But eventually someone walked the other side of the river with there dog shouting hope you have a permit and eventually walked around (he must have sprinted) and got to us and again said hope you have a permit.
    I said no no and he said he was going to call the police and I was like but we're not fishing haha.
    30 minutes it took to show no reel and no fishing line only paracord that my son loved the whoopa sound absolutely hilarious.

      I’d go for something like a 9ft 5 weight setup mate. It’ll do almost everything you need it to on the Devon - nymph, dry, spiders etc. If you can find a rod with a medium fast rather than a very fast action, you’ll also get slightly better presentations and enjoy playing the smaller fish 👍🏼. If you’re fishing the dry up there, I’d also get a couple of 12ft tapered leaders too. Although trout are generally daft as anything, they can be a bit spooky especially when the water is low and a longer leader should help. All the usual flies should work too and in my experience the angling association guys are all really happy to share tips and advice. Tight lines Ross 🤙🏼🎣🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

      Hi James, great to have you on board! At the start of this video, I'm using a 7'6ft 5wt vision glass trout rod. Later on, I'm using a 9ft 5wt rod. Generally I like 4 or 5 wt rods. Smaller rods on smaller rivers, longer rods on bigger rivers where you're managing the line a bit more. I use floating lines (Rio Gold is my favourite), usually with a 12/15ft tapered leader down to 5x. I don't worry about reels too much - just a nice clean reel that will balance well on the rod. I also have a euronymphing setup, but that's another topic for discussion 😂. Tight lines 🙏🏼🐟🎣

      Thank you mate! Appreciate that feedback too 👍🏼. I’ve tried to talk a bit more about flies, setups etc in my more recent videos. Part of me feels there’s loads of other channels that cover the technical/educational but far better than I ever could. So I’ve made a conscious decision to try and showcase the rivers, the fish and the feels a bit more. But there’s definitely a happy medium in there somewhere and it’s great to know what people who take the time to watch and leave a comment are interested in so I can try to incorporate that a bit more. Tight lines 🙏🏼🐟🎣

      Of course, Stephen. Its about halfway between dollar and rumbling bridge, Theres a wee car park by a bridge and you can fish upstream through the gorge or downstream towards dollar. There’s miles of cracking fly water from Dollar right the way up towards the top of the DAA water

      It’s always a good idea to see what flies are on the water and have a go at matching them. But generally speaking I find simple flies work well on the rivers. Flies like Elk hair emergers, Quigley’s cripples, F flies, adams and comparaduns in olives, browns and greys will usually do the job in size 14-18. Sometimes a tiny wee black midge will fool the picky trout. But especially in rough water, you can usually get away with general imitations. And if the fish are coming short or you get lots of missed takes, tying on a small weighted nymph a foot or so below the dry usually does the trick 👍🏼. Tight lines 🤙🏼🎣

    Great bit of film , just note the water clarity everyone, and as said the fish are tremendous . I am mystified by the desire to catch stockies in the U.K., and more mystified that anyone would ever eat them, when we have this. Have a good season. Remember as well that the fish farms are wrecking the environment. Especially in Scotland. Keep them out where possible. They offer very few jobs and do terrible damage.

      Cheers David! I'm the same. I'd take a 4 mile walk and a 10 inch trout over a bag limit on a put and take fishery any day of the week. Also agree with you about the fish farms. There has to be a long-term solution and better protection of our wild fish.

      @@SouthsideFlyFishing Hi, you are lucky to have all that good fishing, some of the southern English streams have been dredged, or have run off from intensive farms which mean the are not of the same water quality you have in Scotland , I think the best English streams are in Derbyshire, where the Wye and other streams are not stocked , they are fabulously clear due to the limestone. But in England there is less to go round. It makes me regret all the time I spent chasing salmon I should have stayed with trout fishing which I think is far more interesting , and really what fl6 fishing is all about.

    How do you keep your flies floating ?

    • @SouthsideFlyFishing
      @SouthsideFlyFishing  3 года назад

      Good question, mate 👍🏼. It’s a few things - I tie my wings with materials like deer/elk hair and CDC feathers, which naturally float quite well. CDC in particular is amazing. You also tend to use lighter hooks for dry flies. With the hair wings, I’ll also use a bit of floatant before fishing them. Gink is a popular one but they all work, except on CDC where you’d use a special oil rather than a silicone based floatant. Then if your flies do get wet, you need to try and get rid of the water. You can just squeeze the fly out or use a special tool to dry it. False casting a bit more aggressively also helps you dry the fly. Then, lastly, the fly will float better if you try to keep it drifting along at the speed of the current. If you let the fly drag at the end of the drift, it’ll get wet sooner. Hope that helps. Are you just getting into fly fishing?

      @@SouthsideFlyFishing we’ll have fly fished twice got a decent rod aswell just had difficulty keeping dries afloat. Had a lesson in august can’t remember what the instructor used it made the fly really boyant as he could pull it right under and it would still come back up floating great.

    • @SouthsideFlyFishing
      @SouthsideFlyFishing  3 года назад

      @@anthonyigoe8573 If you're looking for a specific product, you might want to take a look at a company called Loon. They do a powder in a bottle that you pop your fly into and give a shake. That totally removes the moisture from the fly and adds a bit of floatation. Then there's a silicon gel floatant called Lochsa that you rub in your fingers and apply to the wing/body of the fly. Unless you're using CDC, and the fly is well-tied with buoyant materials, those two products together will keep it floating like a cork. The fly I'm using in the video from the Devon is an elk-hair emerger that my mate Andrew tied (ajhfishing on instagram) and apart from drying it off occasionally and reapplying floatant, I don't think I changed it the whole evening

      @@anthonyigoe8573 thanks mate. Aye there’s some good pools in Linn Park. The obvious ones by the white bridge and at the snuff mill end of the park get fished a fair bit. You’ll still catch fish in those spots. But if you search some of the less accessible bits, and especially if you’ve waders, you’ll find some really nice fly water. I’ve fished the busby/Clarkston stretch a few times and also caught plenty of trout
