  • He may be one of the most influential figures in today’s film industry, but Robert Downey Junior was no overnight success. Downey Jr’s life was one big rollercoaster of ups and downs. Downs that were so bad that he ended up in jail more than one time. How did he end up resurrecting his reputation and who saved him? Is it possible that love could have been both the thing that destroyed and saved him?

I'm so glad he got better and his career back the MCU would never have been as good without him. He honestly seems like one of the few genuine people from Hollywood.

If Rober Downey Jr has his career and life back, it means that Johnny Depp also can have his life and career back. To not say that Johnny is innocent. This two should star in a movie together.

He has been my favorite actor since he first hit the scene! He was also an inspiration when it came to kicking my own addictions.

His life was really a mess back then, and He came out so blessed to be alive and to have lived through this. I hope He is Thanking God every day for keeping Him here and for never giving up on Him. But He certainly didn't have an example in His Dad.

man, you gotta mention Gibson in this.
Downey has frequently spoken about his friendship with Gibson, and how Gibson bankrolled him, and stood by him, and provided him with opportunity when absolutely NO one else did. They have a great friendship.

I think the comment his dad made about giving him a joint at age six needs to be taken with a pinch of salt.
People of an older generation say things not even considering what they say will be torn apart.
Families have these stories they tell and it's not until they are out of their family storytelling bubble and in a different bubble with people they don't know that well that they realise from the other person's dismay and judgment that " hang on a second. We have been telling this story for decades thinking it was an entertaining story to tell and it never was"
We've all done it. And the other thing is that creative people leave themselves wide open to obvious criticism. They literally set themselves up for it . And it's not until they get a bad response and pulled apart that they sit there looking like a submissive, dumbstruck child thinking to themselves " why did I do that? Why did I say that? "
Other questions they ask throughout life is " why do I keep taking one step forward and 10 back" " why does this keep happening to me?" " Why do I keep getting in trouble?" " what did I do wrong?"
It's because creative people are more likely to have mental health disorders such as ADHD OCD and personality disorders and bipolar disorder. The list goes on.
Depending on which ones they have they could be huge empaths too. Nice people aren't expecting to be judged.
I would think though that Robert Downey Jrs dad had ADHD. My daughter has it and she leaves herself wide open to criticism. She wouldn't say she gave a kid a joint, but then she's not an older guy of a certain generation.
As for him using drugs with his son later down the line my daughter has discussed with me every drug she has ever used and intimate details about her sex life. Robert Downey Jrs dad was an addict so there was absolutely no way he was going to be able to shield his son from that. I imagine the first time he exposed his son to it he felt terrible and it just became easier. It's an illness. Most people have compulsions. Some self medicate mental health and it becomes a compulsion. You can't hide a compulsion because you have to act on them when they take hold. A lot of addicts have OCD and it's a battle with the mind not just the drug.
Anyway if his dad hadn't be so approachable RDJ could have ended up in a lot worse trouble. Making mistakes to avoid getting into trouble with parents is a real thing. It can lead to regret when you find out your parents would have been understanding, but you didn't know that side of them. Living in fear of parents can lead to emotional problems later down the road. So good thing his dad was a dad and not a parent ( as in someone to be feared). He was an open book and showed his son that he was human and vulnerable. He got to see his dad navigate life which must've made him feel proud of his dad's work and achievements and vice versa. Rather than be told " your dad's going to kill you" several times a week. Kids can be very literal minded.
It doesn't matter the relationship a person has with an addict. When you see them working for the first time. If they have a craft that is. Any kind of craft that they are good at it causes you to feel something for them in that moment that's like admiration. You've seen them trashed and fragile and now you're seeing them being skilled. An absolute master of their trade. It's not what you expected. Imagine watching your own father command his space and create something credible and being included in that process.
Also parents used to give their kids alcohol. Go further back and they gave it to babies in their bottles. I think this was his dad's mindset.
