  • In January, David Bennett made history becoming the first human ever to have a heart of a genetically modified pig transplanted in their body. The University of Maryland Medical Center, where he had the procedure, has announced that he has died two months after the experiment. No official cause of death has been revealed, but doctors say he began deteriorating several days before dying. Inside Edition Digital has more.

57 with an extreme heart disease surviving for months with a pig's heart is already impressive enough, for those people thinking that the pig's heart wasn't even helpful/impressive that he lived in such a short life. This is such a huge feat in history, think about this if this man doesn't have an "extreme" heart disease but instead a "mild" heart disease yet he agreed for a pig's heart transplant he'll live longer than that. If this man's heart didn't deteriorate but he still has this extreme heart disease he wouldn't live long either with the human heart, thankfully for this research and the family agreeing for this research this have been helpful for humanity. It might be disgusting or pity the poor pig's life that s/he was chosen to be the heart donator, you might be a vegan or something but no worrys! i'll eat the rest of the pig so there wouldn't be any waste ;)

The entire situation was so numbing...seeing him withering away in a hospital bed, crying in private and telling my dad he was terrified to die, even being a Korean War veteran. My aunts brought him a framed collage of all his happiest moments with family and he couldn't even look at it. I remember the day we got the call...we were in the hotel room by the hospital and they told us he went to sleep and passed. I have never heard my dad cry like that...ever. It was a loud, intense wailing that shook me to my core and I'm so scared that one day that will be me, with him lying in the hospital bed.

Absolutely crazy and probably the future of medicine. I remember being a child and writing stories about clones being made for transplants but it would be amazing if we could use organs from pigs.

It’s not future medicine it didn’t work no animal organ will work in a human had it been a human heart the man would still be here prob a lot longer

@@kayhumph9109 to me it sounded like the pig heart was able to let him live at least a little longer. So even if it's not a permanent solution it could give someone the time to find a match for a human heart transplant.
However, I still do think we will be able to genetically engineer pigs to be able to donate organs. I'm probably wrong but I have hope.
