It should be re-made, so much having transpired 'tween then an' now. Casting for it would be tough tho. For example, who could possibly act in the present Baron's stead, with whom already we are so familiar? My idea is that, if he might be convinced to play the original Patriarch, Meyer Amschel, that would be ideal. Personally, I think His Lordship would make a terrific job of it and also, to possibly serve at that same time as historical & technical advisor. He might even foot the entire sum for the production! (Mere jingling pocket change!) Also, much of it might even be filmed at Waddesdon Manor, saving money! If directing it, I'd add-in The Golem in the early parts, and make it really Gothic, even up to modern times. It would be a great hit, no question! I think we're onto something big, here.

I'm absolutely amazed that a Hollywood movie featuring a flattering portrayal of a family that has been the target of anti Semitic attacks for generations, would have been released during the depths of the Great Depression. Given this film's lighthearted treatment of war profiteering, insider trading and blatant political corruption, I'd have thought the unemployed masses would've stormed the studio with torches and pitchforks.
The cinema industry was one of the few that didn't quite suffer as much with the stocks crashing. Actually it grew with the depression as people would come for the popcorn that the ticket also included. It was at that time that many classical films were made including Frankenstein and all the Universal Monsters films, Grand Hotel with Greta Garbo and the bulk of Clark Gable's carrer. So it wouldn't be seen as unusual.

I'm absolutely amazed that a Hollywood movie featuring a flattering portrayal of a family that has been the target of anti Semitic attacks for generations, would have been released during the depths of the Great Depression. Given this film's lighthearted treatment of war profiteering, insider trading and blatant political corruption, I'd have thought the unemployed masses would've stormed the studio with torches and pitchforks.
