The Left - Banning Bowhunting in South Australia

  • Despite the Labor setting up a stacked committee to access if Bowhunting is ethical and ignoring the committee report. Labor Australia's version of the Democrates is planning on banning Bowhunting on 1st December 2024.
Like all great left wing political parties it is not lets sit down and hear what you have to say it is do as your told. I discuss how this ban effects Aboriginal Australians who are currently allowed to hunt anywhere. Under these changes Aboriginal Australians will be allowed to club or spear an Animal to death but no longer be allowed to use a compound bow.
This ban only effects private land owners as hunting is not allowed in parks. I discuss how Labor manages feral deer populations by using a helicopter to gun down deer. The humanity side of poisoning animals vs shooting animals.
I discuss the whole debate of Vegan vs Meat eating and farming vs hunting.
While Labor members may privately disagree with this ban - they are not allowed to voice their view. Many members from right wing parties have discussed their view on this and opennly discussed they oppose the ban.
The Green political party has been silent on the issue.

I know hundreds of hunters both with bow and rifle, and not one of them enjoys killing animals. But , they do love the hunt process. They understand and respect the animal they hunt like no one else.
In Tasmania where I live bowhunting has been banned for sometime.
This legislation was pushed through quickly as a good communist state does.
All photographs used were animals with target arrows hanging in them.
Education and training is what is needed, not bans.

"Communist state..?" That's the usual thing people say whenever they don't like something, agree withy something or downright hate something. You have NO CLUE whatsoever what communism is, or what a communist state looks like. Whether you like it or not, people don't like idiots firing arrows into animals. If that's something you enjoy doing, shame on you.

Thank you for a very fair and balanced opinion piece, Steve.
I am mostly vegetarian and have many vegan meals per week, myself. The reason I have a problem with meat, is the way the meat is produced nowadays; it is extremely cruel to the animal. Modern meat production methods from farming to abattoir, would make everyone a vegan if only people knew what's happening.
Australian Population is 26,500,000, and bow hunters accounts for about 105,000; which is %0.0004 of the Australian population. If these hunters do kill four deer a year that is a total of 420,000 hunted deer per year. Why would hunting 420,000 animals be deemed cruel, when 600,000,000 farmed animal die in abattoirs every year in Australia?
Lastly, most hunters do only kill feral animals (Pigs, Goats, Foxes, Rabbits, etc) which cause a huge amount of damages to Australian natives animals and flora, so they are doing Australia a favor, really!

Funny how so many people are “concerned” about the ethics of hunting, yet never question battery hens, grain fed animals, or main stream abattoir’s and slaughter houses.
The Victorian anti bow hunting legislation is a disgrace. Strange how society condones fishing (throw a baited hook into the watery depths and hope you catch what you want, or you needlessly stress, mame, and kill the fish that are not being targeted) but bans bow hunting (usually you are around 30mtrs from your target and can CLEARLY see what your going to kill)
Another thing vegans, veggo’s and leftist do gooders conveniently overlook, is that eating a carrot means killing the carrot.

One small little problem if everyone goes Vegan, farmers would need to cultivate say 50 times more land for vegetables and fruit. Banning legally licenced people is easy for governments because we allowed them to create the licensing of just about everything - cars, fishing, firearm, boats, airplanes etc, etc.
They have all our details, so they know who we are and where we live which makes policing us easier than if we refused to license anything - just like criminals.
It's a great way of collecting taxes, it increases at least one a year - so we have to ask why ban a taxable activity. Assuming that where you are in Australia they haven't as yet introduced a licence, so they aren't losing a tax. Spare a thought for West Australians in 2024 that have been legally licenced firearm users for many years. They are now facing restrictions which may well see many lose their licences because the government sees them as a threat to the police & public - criminals are not affected by any bans. Go figure.

In America, the hunting industry is an enormous industry and helps manage animals and lands all across every state. Theres a big problem with too many politicians trying to control it that have no knowledge of wildlife or conservation and are just doing it for votes, lobbying etc. The big problem right now in the northern states is wolves arent being managed properly, and now politicians are trying to get rid of mountian lion season. And state paid sharpshooters shooting hundreda or thousands of deer teying to eliminate CWD even when EHD takes too heavy of a toll on herds or when winters are extremely hard and take its toll on herds. Wildlife management needs to come from generations of conservationists,.not stacked committees of politicians.

I agree 100%, I live in UK and bow hunting is illegal even here in Scottish Highlands yet if you can get a licence you can own a gun and go hunting for deer on the large privately owned estates, the problem with guns is the shots are usually taken from much longer ranges than would be done with a bow so injury is more likely I'd have thought. I also think farming animals on open land is much better than battery farms full of animals or agricultural farms with miles of monoculture often covered in plastic.

This is very well thought through and carefully explained essay on what is a fairly complex and difficult topic. It comes down to the question of is it ethical to deliberately kill an animal by shooting it with an arrow. The reality is that if it is a good shot the animal will suffer no stress at all. It will die without ever knowing that it has been hit.
The new ban sounds like they got one bossy Karen to make the rules and pointedly ignored everything else.
The question that I have is why was the issue brought up in the first place? What was the problem that caused the government to even look into the matter? Was there an epidemic of incompetent bow hunters out there maiming animals or something? What brought this matter? If that was the case, why not introduce an education program to improve ethics and accuracy of the hunters?

The only thing saving Texas is its got the least amount of federal and state owned land than any other state. It's mostly private. But that also makes it harder to hunt here unless you own land or pay for expensive leases or day hunts.

Most Americans aren't fighting either sadly. Nearly 100,000,000 gun owners and how many actually do anything to stand up for their rights? We have a constitution that says all gun laws are unconstitutional yet we have 40,000 gun laws and they keep adding more.
Every year sees a drop in hunting licenses sold which is not a good sign because eventually it means there won't be enough of them to fight against the anti hunter's and as revenue drops from the sale of hunting licenses and the tax on hunting equipment used to pay for wildlife management the government will have more incentive to just ban hunting.
We aren't as far from being Australia as we'd like to think and certainly aren't as free as people tell themselves.

Don't forget ducks, primary industries can apply for a destruction permit for duck. No bag limit, no declaration of numbers required, no restriction on what time of year and eggs and young can be destroyed also. Lastly, no money paid for the permit unlike recreational hunting. On goats, its only a viable resource for farmers when prices are high enough.

Also gun vs bow hunting, ive done a lot of both. I don't see any difference with it. Except if you shoot a animal at last light with a bow then tracking after the required wait can be a bit problematic at times. Firearms make tracking a moot point 95% of the time.

I am not a hunter but have gone with friends that hunt. I don`t like seeing animals dying because some one with a rifle or bow think they are great and power full - to me it is obvious they are useless without their weapons, but if an animal can be killed within the shortest period of time and is killed for consumption I am still heart broken but do understand it is for good use. If you don`t want to eat meat fine but don`t force what you think down on others that do want to eat meat.

As far as honey goes when you do shoot an animal the animals blood knows how to take care of itself the animal produces a chemical in the body to start a blood clotting so it slows down the blood but if you let say shoot with a bow and arrow and you pass right through then the animal don't even know it's hit it just wanders over and lays down and it's done that's why I also you hear a lot of people say they would rather shoot with a bow and arrow than a gun and bullet because of bullying causes severe trauma that's how it kills the animal and yes you're right Stephen if you ain't careful people are so caught up on this BS that if they're not careful they ain't even know I'm going to know how to take care of yourself anymore and they're going to rely on their government to take care of them but didn't guess what when the government can't take care of you or don't want to guess what happens you're in trouble

It’s a bit like this to me , male chicks are shredded the day they are born no profit not enough meat female chickens are killed at 6 weeks lambs sheep cowes a couple of years old , if anyone is cruel it’s the meat industry . A naturally hunted deer is 5 to 8 years old and despite being hunted with a bow its natural death would have been dying of old age by a water hole unable to move and subject to freezing weather or heat while its body shuts down . Hunting is ethical compared to farm animals . Has anyone thought of a legal challenge over bow hunting
