Brutal comment string. The video serves its purpose, and Dr. Leape does a fantastic job of thoroughly explaining how to address a patient following malpractice. What a great resource for all health professionals.
As long as liability is the primary concern, nothing will change. The number of lawyers, etc that are employed by the medical community has skyrocketed in the last four decades. Thanks for the interesting info!
More doctors need to do this and mean it! A group of us patients are working on putting a system of accountability in place and I hope some doctors will have the courage to join us in this effort. I think you are absolutely right, that most patients really don't want to sue doctors, it's a last resort when everything else to communicate with the doctor has been tried and they absolutely refuse to accept responsability and make reparations so the patient can resume their treatment and move on with their lives. Healthcare Corporations reinforce the bad behavior too. They encourage everyone to close ranks when something happens and then the patient is ganged up on. That needs to end and the corporations that employ them need to be held accountable too.
This sounds really good - but not the real world. I'm a nurse: reported bad drs who'd pass out in patient rooms & write bizarre orders. Another sent an obese pt home w/a xverse incision starting to dehisce. He wouldn't listen-she trusted him. She 'unzipped' at home & died the next day..I copied these errors & wrote up the docs. I was fired. The DON made it clear docs bring in $ & I don't. So much for honesty & openness etc. It's all about money. If you can hide the mistakes, that's what's done

It is kind of hard to apologize to dead patients.
