Best review ever....long term use is the only way to know just how good or bad a lap top is. Thanks Matthew!
Thanks man! = ) I'm glad you liked it!
What an amazing laptop! I just got one and I would recommend it to anyone! The 4k UHD infinity edge screen was the main selling point for me and it sure does have the wow factor! I am not a gamer, I will be using mine for graphic design and animation but If you are intending to use your laptop purely for gaming, then maybe you might consider some of the other gamer laptops on the market. This XPS would still be a great choice though, plus the build quality by Dell is bang on.
I want to clear up a couple of things I heard in previous reviews when I was trying to choose a laptop. The XPS keyboard in my opinion is really nice to use. Yes it has short key travel but that's really not a problem. I personally was expecting the keyboard to be really small being the size of a 14" laptop, with the keys being really close together but they're not. The keyboard is a joy to use and the back-lit keyboard looks stunning! Along side the carbon fibre palm rest, the aluminium shell, the 4K infinity edge screen and the tapered 11-17mm thickness of the laptop. This laptop is sleek and stylish, which in my opinion, you don't find in gamer laptops.
I have also not had any driver problems and everything seems to be working as it should. I think when the XPS was first released there were a couple of issues but as far as I am aware, Dell has rectified these problems.
I'm using a macbook pro for graphic design and illustration. I want to upgrade, but newer models and 15'' MacBooks are just impossible to buy. Have you used macbook before? Do you think this is a good replacement for it?
thank you in advance ;)
+Mauro Perasso I cannot tell you which is better, as I have never owned a Mac before, Windows is just what I grew up using and prefer for many reasons. Although I have seen a video of someone putting the XPS and Macbook to the test by getting them both to export a 5min video at the same time and the XPS finished about 30secs ealier than the Mac. I hear Apple will be realeasing a new version of Macbook around the end of 2016 with the i7 processor, as they are a couple of years out of date at the moment but as you can imagine, they will probably set you back quite a bit of money for the privilege. So, if you take into consideration value for money, the XPS is pretty good for what you get. Plus, did I mention the 4k screen? ....WOW! This is just my opinion though, I will probably always be a Windows OS user and I did buy the Dell over all...... and I love it! :)
Hi! How many weeks/months did you have this?
I've had mine about 9 weeks now. I just want to point out that I'm no computer expert and I don't review laptops etc. I just wrote about my laptop because I am very happy with my choice and wouldn't change it for anything.
I am still waiting since 10 months ago to the new macbook pro. When it comes out i will see if it worth buying it. If not I will go for this Dell.
The first thing I do with the SSD is switching it from RAID mode into AHCI mode, this increase the speed significantly, updating the BIOS and driver get rid of the sound problem and the wifi connection problem, I never experience any USB disconnection problem, but maybe that is only because I never runs them with external HDD, only fingers, I also didn't have any problem with the SD card slot, which is strange because I have heard many people have the same problem as you do, however I only mostly use a external card reader because I have both CF and SD to deal with. Dell is actually very good at pushing updates for their high tier laptops, I wish they fix the thunderbolt dock problem though, as they seems to put development of that broken piece of garbage on hold. Photoshoping and video editing with this machine is a great, colour is outstanding, but it do suck up much of the battery life(or lack there of).
Great video. I remember watching your original video back when the XPS 15 first came out. I ordered one but replaced it after running into too many issues.. this is making me think I should give it another shot (especially now that they are on sale!)
Thanks! = ) I definitely think it's worth another shot!
I bought this laptop about 1 month ago (Full HD, i7, 512GB, 16GB). From my personal experience I had none of the problem or bugs I herad about. No BSODs or driver issues; there was a problem with the audio, I heard an annoying eco effect, but I found out that was a setting in the equalization app. However, everything runs smoothly in this beautyful pc.
I have something else positive to say: I tried to install osx on it and even if i had some troubles (and eventually gave up) i was amazed by the fact that wifi worked out of the box (for people who are interested that's really cool). That made me discovering another aspect of this pc that i think is related to the market in wich it's sold; I don't have the Samsung ssd (that should be the pm951 nvme) but a toshiba ssd (also nvme) that gave me some really good results on Crystaldiskmark (read:2446 MB/s write:1544 MB/s); after those I changed my idea on buying a new 950pro.
That said I'm going to use this laptop for engineering studies wich is perfect for looking at its form factor and its raw power. Later I manage to attach an external gpu as i heard it seems to work with the Razer Core (I hope that during next year or in the late 2016 we will see other products like that)
+YouWantITA That's awesome! Thanks for sharing the xps 15 is still my daily driver and I love it.
I got my Dell XPS 15 9550 in February this year. [16GB RAM, GTX960m, i7-6700hq, UHD Touch, 512GB Nvme SSD]
It had major problems right out of the box. Screen flickering, audio jack failing, wifi messing with graphics (idk how! stupid drivers).... and oh.. THE DRIVERS AND BIOS.... Most stable right now for graphics performance is 1.1.19 because bios 1.2 makes for inconsistent graphics performance.
I fixed many of my issues through drivers, settings, and installing an intel AC 8620 card. The broadcom card gave me screen flickering when connecting to non AC routers...
But now... I honestly can't find a laptop better. KabyLake just came out and the GTX 10 series. But the CPU performance isn't a bottleneck. And with the thunderbolt 3, I can connect to many new eGPUs that are coming out (cheaper ones than the razer core will be out in the first quarter of 2017.
Dbrand makes great skins for it... I love the carbon fiber and wood skins.
Tl;Dr Many bugs... get an IntelAC 8620 card! (Easy install). Be cautious and meticulous on drivers.
This Laptop is worth the price. (I paid $1500 US) (got off amazon)
Felipe Navarroi got mine for $1100 but had a catch, 256gb SSD, I thought it won't be an issue but I'm getting BSOD frequently with an error "critical process failed/died"
now I don't know how to fix it or what to install. tried installing Samsung 950 nvme controller software but now instead of getting BSOD, I'm getting system freeze n hangups ...
updated bios also but still the same ...
for some reason my windows 10 home is not updating from 1511 to latest version for some reason
Matt im a follower of your work here on youtube, I think u have found a niche and you should specialize in this nice "The few months later/still worth it thing" go on!
+Dwight Castillo Thanks Dwight !! I like doing them and I do have a series dedicated to it.
+Dwight Castillo Thanks Dwight !! I like doing them and I do have a series dedicated to it.
thank you SO MUCH for doing an after purchase review and very informative, concise thanks!!!!
+koreanfoxy21 my pleasure ! I'm glad you found it helpful!
Yep, almost a year in. The biggest problem? The radio. I battled Bluetooth issues and finally got a replacement 5510 (at no cost, from Dell) and it is currently on its way back from being repaired at Dell. New motherboard, new Wi-Fi/Bluetooth card.
OTHERWISE,
Fast
Light
Stylish
6 hrs of battery life on non-SolidWorks tasks (that a day of air travel)
What an AMAZING machine.
The radio reliability has nearly caused me to give up on it, but the word is that Dell's repair people are really very good, and I should have my Dell Precision 5510 back this Monday before 3 PM, and, after 11 months after my original purchase, am looking forward to giving it one more shot.
Why? It really *is* that amazing a machine.
I agree it's awesome! I can't wait for the refresh with the new 10 series GPUs. I'll definitely sell mine for the new one.
One of the great things I love about this laptop is that I can use it with a Dell Docking station to power 3 external monitors as well as using the laptop screen giving me 4 monitors to work from. It's outstanding. The only downside I've found is that the screen's resolution is so high at 4k that Windows is practically unusable. If I scale up the Window's fonts, most (but not all) applications will adjust. A better solution is to run the laptop display at less than 4k.
Fantastic follow up review! Recently purchased (in the last month) the XPS 15, and have to say it's exactly the overall quality(trackpad, look and feel, and performance) that makes it worth every penny. Just recently had the opportunity to trade for the Razer Blade 14 (2016), but I really missed the screen and the Microsoft Precision Touchpad features.
Also, fantastic channel.
+A.D.Dudes Thanks man! It really is a great laptop. I've never used a razer sadly. How are you liking it?
+A.D.Dudes Thanks man! It really is a great laptop. I've never used a razer sadly. How are you liking it?
+Matthew Moniz I actually decided against swapping for the Razer Blade! The screen and the trackpad (plastic buttons!) were just not comparable to the XPS 15 at all. Got a replacement XPS and went on my way!
nice! = ) I ended up dropping my XPS while making this video like a complete dummy. I'm waiting for it to get repaired and sent back.
def enjoyed this review. looks like a sick laptop. when I'm ready to start editing in 4K, I'll def upgrade to something like this.
+n8best for sure your fraps will look great on this one
Can't imagine why anyone would want to trash their expensive notebook with a dbrand skin. I have had in the past, and currently have two metal notebooks. Never been able to scratch them. One of the notebooks I have is a Dell XPS 13. It along with its bigger brother are beautiful notebooks as is. Show them off, don't hide them! Great video though!
Thanks FLoyd! = ) I actually dropped my Dell XPS 15 while filming this video and there's dents all over the front. The dbrandskin covers them nicely = )
Great review! The only bug I had was that the Wi-Fi would turn itself off when connected to a Bluetooth mouse
How are people doing with battery life with just basic tasks like web browsing, youtube, and etc?
$1700??! And this was released like what, almost a year ago? I just bought one on Dell's website for $1810 after -$40 student discount and Dell's 10% off. How's it still more expensive than what Matthew paid for lol? But anyway thanks for the review Matthew. After watching your Zenbook Pro and XPS 15 reviews I ultimately decided to buy this 4k XPS with 512 SSD. Ships in about a week or two and I can't wait!! Better be worth it for this price!! (Even tho I didn't pay for it gotta thank my parents for the best college gift🤗).
Just incase anyone is wondering why I bought this over the Zenbook pro, here are a few reasons and I'm writing this because I wanted some opinions when I was deciding myself.
1. Both are touch screen, which is what I needed for some of my college classes, but the Zenbook pro apparently has a super, almost "mirror-like," reflective screen that makes it almost impossible to use outdoors in the sunlight because the screen itself is not very bright. Even indoors it is so reflective I might just see people sitting behind me.
2. The bezels on the XPS line are so small, I've never seen a laptop like it. The Zenbook; however, I think has a lot bigger than average bezel size. My current laptop (which is quite bad because I had a desktop in high school and never used the 3 yr oldlaptop) is 15 inches and barely fit in my backpack. The bezels on the zenbook would make the laptop not able to fit.
3. I heard the Zenbook track pad is not super reliable and I need to use the pad for my classes since the prop up platforms in college classrooms are too small to hold a laptop + mouse.
My current laptop has a 3rd gen i5 processor at 1.8 GHz, 1 TB HDD, 8 GB DDR3 ram, intel "HD" 4000 graphics (lol!), 15.6 touch, and not even 1080p screen. This XPS is going to be a huge upgrade!
Only 50K subs?? You sir deserve a lot more!
sincerely, a new suscriber :)
+Edifier Thanks man :)
new reason: works with the razer core :)
have u tested this out?
is the razer core upgradeable to gtx 1070 / 1080?
Can't wait to see more comparable eGPU enclosers on the market (of this Razer quality). Is it still buggy running it? I know they opened up the drivers for it...
A.D.Dudes from what i've heard as long as the laptop is the Blade Stealth or the new Blade, it'll work just fine.
I'm gonna get this instead of the razer blade stealth
Maybe it is too late (2 months) but this link can be useful for others whom looking for it:

Just bought this, thanks for the video! :)
+Thijs Kennis my pleasure: ) how are you liking it?
Good honest reviews. Nice video quality.
+mpgrewal00 thank you !
Man loved the video! actually been considering this laptop for when on the go!
+TechTechBoom nice!! It's an awesome laptop it's the size and display that did it for me.
+Matthew Moniz Yeah the Display seems pretty danm good! Curious if the specs will handle my 3D software well haha
haha, well what do you use now?
+Matthew Moniz Currently using my PC haha, thinking of getting something for CES and travelling. XPS 15 seems pretty good for editing and some light gaming! You may have convinced me here!
just because your channel is awesome....keep it up man ! #supporter
+BJ Johnson Thanks BJ!! Glad to have you as a supporter
You mention this laptop can edit 4K video as long as you use a separate scratch disk, I'll be getting one of these for video editing so could you please elaborate on what you mean by using a separate scratch disk?
+SoTotallyToby a scratch disk is just a separate hard drive. So for example I use a portable Samsung T1 for all my footage that I use to edit off. When you have your editing software and footage on the same drive it runs much to slow.
Dell XPS 13 owner here. I have had some problems with temperatures hitting 70 degrees celsius while just watching youtube or typing word documents. Fixed it on my own, DELL told me it's totally normal...
Can you share how you fix your problem? Because I believe the problem is related to Window's poor CPU management. For exmaple, watching 4K video on youtube on my I7 overclocked to 4.3 GHz is enough to gives it a 60% utilization on all 8 core.
I changes some settings in the Energy profile. I've set the cpu to a Max % so that it won't go to full power. also I changed another function but I forgot how it was called... believe it was skmething like TLP-High to TLP-Low..
Thank you for very nice and informative reviews. I can't decide between the XPS 15 and the Lenovo Carbon X1. I would be using it mainly for writing, and I don't need a touch screen. I'm thinking the lenovo keyboard, battery life and weight give it an advantage, but I still find the XPS 15" screen really attractive.
You're welcome Siegfried! Both laptops will do you fine for writing, however, the XPS 15 has a dedicated graphics card which will help if you plan on gaming or editing video. If you don't plan on doing that then the X1 carbon might be the better option if you prefer a better keyboard and easier portability.
great review! I wanna get this laptop so bad mostly because of the 4k display and thos really thin bezels. but I think I wanna upgrade my desktop first and then get a laptop
Thanks man! = ) The display is insane especialy with the bezels, but ya definitely upgrade the desktop first!
Thanks for this. Was looking at this exact model and the Asus Zenbook Pro.
+Miguel Agawin you're welcome! Which one did you decide on?
Got my MacBook Pro resuscitated so I didn't end up going for the somewhat cheaper alternative of replacing it. Now can wait for the new generation to be announced next month to stack it against the XPS. And I would've chosen that over the Zenbook as I simply fell in love with the design. It had that impact you know-you'll come home with the one you want.
Matthew - great video! Just bought this laptop. Incidentally, could you please share the name of the background music? Sounds awesome!!
nice point. Theres a new updated version of it which solve the write up problem u have in that laptop. You should review the new version. Oh and the reason why i liked this video is because u mentioned about editing which im interested in a laptop at the moment. Pls do a review on the new version :D
Great video man and you really deserve more subs.
Thanks man I really appreciate that = )
Matthew Moniz No problem and i really like how you always responds to the comments that your subs post and i also like your good sense of humor. I am always happy to see you featured in other RUclipsrs vids. I was really happy to see you and Canoopsy in Amando's game video.
Hey Matthew, I bought it over a month ago, and I wanna thank you for that because I couldn't decide between DELL XPS 15 and ASUS ZenBook Pro UX501, but after I watched your comparison video I went with Dell. I am really satisfied with it and I don't have any major problems with it, except with the audio crackling and popping. How did you fix that? I have the latest BIOS and driver updates, but the problem is still present. It does not happen very often, maybe once in every hour or two, but that still annoys me. :)
Is it still working properly after this month? :> or would you already recommend another model now
Great video, what about this XPS and the Precision 5510 which looks same but with i7 6820hq?
Great review! I was also wondering how the battery life has been and has changed since you first got it and if the bug with the crackling audio has been fixed. Thanks!
Thanks Rachel! The audio crackling has been fixed with updates. As for battery life, I can't really comment. I usually have it plugged in 90% of the time.
Thanks to your review i'm going to buy this laptop. Thanks bro
You're welcome! = ) Glad I could help!
I got my XPS 15 (9550) 2 months ago, August 2016, and my sound is crackling. So I don't know if that's an update issue or a hardware/ sound card issue.
every thing on point
crisp quality
great review
=
great video
(as usual)
+Hardik Singh Thanks Hardik you rock!
+Matthew Moniz always welcome,keep growing
Man what a good reviewer you are, impressive.Do you think the 13' model would be good for programming?
Yes depending on which prossecor you choose
Thanks Christian! I really appreciate it! Totally the 13" is more than fine for programming!
+Matthew Moniz Thanks man.
Great review! Just one thing you didn't mentioned... are the bugs you mentioned ALL being fixed? Thanks!
+Jerry Wuu yup there's no more bugs except for the wifi which is hit or miss for some people but the wifi card can be swapped out quite easily
Excellent!! Thanks!
Thanks for the great video! Regarding the SSD, have you tried changing it. I have heard that the SSD's (both 256 and 512gb) have pretty mediocre write speeds. Maybe upgrading it could fix that.
Great review. I want one of them now.
Thanks Kosta! = )
Awesome review Matt! Few questions, how was your battery life in your seven months? I've read that with the 4K Touch, it's pretty horrible. Would you say that the 4K experience is worth it? About the touch, do you think you need it? How often did you use it? Without considering the software, would you rather the fully specced out MacBook Pro or this? :)
Loved the video; thanks for the review. I just went to look at one of these up close today (local Best Buy retailer) and was surprised to see image retention (burn in) on the store unit. Have you experienced any issues along those lines? I didn't see this sort of thing on any of their other laptops, and it really stood out. (In fact, at first I thought it was just some kind of rectangular "residue" from closing it against the carbon fiber, but indeed, it will not rub off.) It definitely kept me away from making the purchase and I'm trying to find out if anyone has had issues. Thanks!
+Patrick Kelly Thanks Patrick! no burn in on mine nor have I heard anyone complain about it. In all fairness if it's sitting in abest buy all day everyday with the screen on and people touching it constantly I'm sure something is bound to happen.
Ah, thanks! For some reason, I was under the impression it was a brand new model that had just recently been release. Obviously, if you've had one for seven months, I am clearly mistaken. And you're absolutely right... if it's been sitting in the store, I shouldn't be surprised to see an issue like that. Many thanks!
Thanks for the video! What about noise fan? I read some reviews complaining about that
Picked up the 1TB SSD model for a little over £1100 from the Dell Outlet just over a month ago. Was pretty underwhelmed at first but the more I use it, the better it seems to get.
+Mohammed Ali what do you feel is overwhelming about it ?
I said I was initially underwhelmed by it
How about the battery life? Can it satisfy your daily work, including editing video (ofcourse 1 time charge) ?
Great video. Underrated youtuber
+Ajay Daniel Thanks Ajay that means a lot!
+Ajay Daniel Thanks Ajay that means a lot!
What about coil whine? This is the only deterrent to purchase for me.
What color setting do you use for the display? I just picked this one up for video editing and I can't seem to get the warm and oversaturated look to go away. Thanks!
I colour calibrated it with a separate tool. But if you have the 4K panel it will always be a bit too contrasty. There's just tons of pixels
Thanks! Ah I see. What tool would you suggest?
Great review Matthew !!
I have purchased it recently myself and have been using it on a daily basis for about 6 months now.
The only annoying problem I had, after the recent BIOS update was with audio jack.If for some reason the headphones are unplugged and replugged back in, the sound is lost. The only way I could get it back to work was to turn it sleep mode and back on.
Did anyone else face this issue with the audio driver and does it have a solution ?
Hi Matthew, great video as usual!
Just wanted to ask whether there is any upcoming successor for the Dell XPS 9550?
+James Chang most likely just a refresh probably in the fall
+James Chang most likely just a refresh probably in the fall
Matthew, I actually bought Asus Zenbook ux501vw few weeks ago and had to send it back. Super nice machine but unfortunately there is very laud buzzing/cracking noise, which reminds me sounds of old hdd discs, while read/write. This was especially heard when in idle mode. Now I am thinking about XPS but as it has same processor (and as far as i know, it is caused by 6700hQ), i am afraid of the same problem.
So he never stated which bugs were ultimately fixed..?
I'm waiting for Dell to get their 2017 XPS 15 models at Best Buy. I heard they started shipping out already.
Great review!
I'm debating to sell my desktop and invest into a laptop instead. I don't game that much and primary do illustration projects and 1080p video editing.
Do you use your Dell XPS 15 as your primary machine and if so, do you think it will work for my needs?
Thank you for reading and have a nice day (:
Great review bro thanks lot
Hi I'm going to college in the fall and I need to find a good laptop. I really like the design and specs of the dell XPS 15 but I also like the form factor of the XPS 13. Which laptop do you think would preform better for college plus some light gaming. I'm also open to other laptop suggestions. Btw your videos are super awesome and informative. Keep up the good work! :)
+Daniel Lanthrum Thanks Daniel! :) the xps 13 will definitely handle college fine but if you do plan on gaming I'd lean towards the xps 15 since it has a 960m graphics card
+Matthew Moniz Thanks
Useful video. To me I am leaning toward the precision line from dell as offer dual disk; as you mention for video you want two disks one for scratch. On your comment of disappointment write speeds, have you tested say rendering a same video on this versus say Asus pro that has ridiculously high disk speeds? My point is that it might not make a big difference as the CPU or the video card will bottleneck first rather than risk. I could be wrong.
really good review. I am looking to buy a laptop in the next month or so with a similar spec to this to play games such as civilization 6. should I wait for the next gen and if so when will they be released? thanks
Thanks Luke! = ) Dell just updated the XPS 13, so I can only imagine they will update the XPS 15 with the 1060 GPU in the next couple of months. I'd definitely wait for that!
Thanks for the reply. That sounds promising! I shall hang tight for an announcement an hopefully it will be released this side of Christmas! I'd be upset if I spent $2k and they released it straight after lol
Great video as always!
+SandwichTurtle Thanks man!!
+SandwichTurtle Thanks man!!
+SandwichTurtle Thanks man!!
hi Mat! where did you come by this awesome wallpaper with a flower on it? I believe the history of this wallpaper goes back to Dell XPS 15 LX521 (which i happened to own as well), that flower was on the box of the laptop back then.
I thought this wallpaper comes preinstalled with the 9550 but apparently I'm wrong since mine doesn't have any.
Would appreciate any clue :)
cheers!
Mine came preinstalled with the 9550 = ) Unless it carried over when I had the XPS 13 but I doubt it. = )
How should I choose between this one and the MacBook and the Alienware? I'm gonna be a freshman in college and probably gonna major in Engineering. Thanks man nice video
Depend on what you want to do with the laptop, if you are used to IOS then you could have stick with MacBook, but if you are a window person then you will have to think rather do you want to play games or not, because if you want to play games, Alienware should be the way to go, otherwise XPS 15 offer a solid choose for the lower price and still gives you enough performance for some casual gaming.
Keep up the great content!
Thanks Mateo!
Hi Matthew, I have the Dell same config as yours since february....
I am thinking of going Dbrand skin too somewhate later, Your bamboo skins look great but i will Probably go carbon Top and red for touchpad parts, but i don't know if the touchpad will be still still as responsive?
I was a bit unlucky with this model, i had to have a dell technician come and change the motherboard twice!
Things i don't like : fans always on even when cpu temperature is only 21°C(they were silent before swapping motherboards so there is still hope).
Webcam but i never use that, 16X9 UHD screen...16/10 and a 4K screen would have been great.
Keyboard is good for typing but not great....
Looking forward to get an egpu box on top of that and i plan to keep this laptop for many years
I found this laptop with 56Wh battery life, as the other ones were too expensive.. How long do you think that 56Wh battery life would last on regular use?
Would anyone recommend buying it now?
when you say you use an external hard drive for a scratch disc, do you mean you use one for just your scratch disc and another to store your video files, as I would imagine for video editing using the same hard drive for scratch discs and video files would create a bottle no?
What about battery life? How many hours you get when you bought it vs now?
I always use it plugged with bios option for Battery as AC power.
I would estimate battery life 5 to 6 hours for web browsing with 4K screen
Where did you buy it for that price? I can only find it on best buy for 3,000 and on dell website for 2,400
I'm still trying to decide between Dell XPS and Mac Book Pro. Which one do you recommend?
+Claudio B XPS for sure. I have my MacBook pro review coming out tomorrow morning
Thanks! Looking forward to see it
Do you think the current xps 15 would make sense still today, or should I wait for the next version that dell releases?
Totally! I Think the only reason to wait for an xps refresh is to see if it comes with the new 1060m GPUS
Okay, cool!
I just unwrapped my shiny new xps 15. I was waiting desperately for it to be delivered. Prior to its arrival I watched all videos about it on youtube, including your videos. Dude, when talking about issues that people had and those that allegedly have been solve you're leaving out the fact that almost everyone has problems with randome changes in screen brightness. Please do a google search on "xps 15 flickering screen". Why don't you talk about that? If there is a fix to that problem I would excpect reviewers like you to say something about it rather than babbling about specs anyone can check on dells website. I know you will not read this but I had to post this. Excuse my english. I'm super dissapointed and will return the device to the place in China where it took 14 days to come from.
Screen flickers. Is it because it' has 4k screen? I don't know if I should buy this or macbook pro 15 (for video editing/graphic design). Ughh
This only affects 4K screen, right? What was the build date? Did you update drivers?
I had the same model and the screen used to constantly freeze which drove me crazy!
Hi Matthew, was the Overwatch on high settings? Hope to hear from you thanks!
+jeff cleofe yup 1080 high
+Matthew Moniz thanks. was wondering if i should get this or the samsung notebook 9 pro just to play overwatch
Do you think the XPS 13 could last through college? Nothing heavy, just college stuff.
Most definitely! It will last you 3-5 years no problem.
Thanks for your input!!
Its strange I have experience the same bugs in the 9560 model and a strange IPS glow in viewing angles. I dont know if its because of the manufacturer Sharp way of making these 4k panels.
Hi, what do you think when Will dell release xps 15 2017 version? im hoping around october!
great review
+Valentino Filipović it might be October but down hold your breath there's no new cpu architecture from Intel to refresh it.
Im mostly interested in new gpu ( 1060 m maybe), but given its price tag, i will try to get older model with 960m. It is really hard to get one of these in Croatia
Has the dead space bar been fixed? I used on for a short period of time and the space bar was terrible I had to hit it dead center or it wouldn't register a space.
Works fine for me! Never had that issue. If you do send it in to be replaced.
Add a gtx 1060 6gb, make that bottom bezel smaller, extend the battery life a little bit, make it a little bit lighter, fix the keyboard, add an Intel RealSense Camera -- and position it properly -- and BAM; Perfect Laptop. I'd buy one if it had a 3gb 970m. A 2gb 960m is just not good enough.
The reason the camera is positioned strangely is because the bezel is so thin on the top that the camera cannot fit, thus the bottom display couldn't be any smaller without omitting the camera entirely.
I'm buying one thanks to you
I am using xps15 with exactly same specs as yours. it's 8 months old now I got this problem twice where the laptop turn on and suddenly turns off for a few times before starting to work normally .... Now it's working fine but considering that there is only a few months of warranty left I just want to know if this will be a serious issue
how is it so far? Got me thinking about buying it! Will be doing 4K renders as well.
Love it. It's my mobile editing rig. Can't wait for the refreshed version to come out with a 1060 GPU
do you know when?
How do you know it will be a 1060 upgrade?
:)
I highly doubt it'll have a 1060. The TDP is a lot higher for that card. 1050, maybe 1050Ti, sounds more likely.
Wait when is the refresh coming out?
Im wondering where you bought this.. I cant seem to find anything of these specs for that price
I bought here in Canada from the Dell website. It's possible it's a bit different than the american one.
hi . . . have you had any issues connecting it to external display like screen flickering? coil whine issues?
Hi mate, what about the sleep issue, with the battery dying after it wakes up? I heard it is a big issue
+Paulo Renato Zimmermann it used to be an issue when it first came out but it has been fixed
should I buy this now, or should I wait for a refresh? I may need a laptop for school next year.
+LordOfTheChevelles well if you don't need a new laptop right now then you might as well wait and see what else pops up between now and then

+Matthew Moniz If I wait until August, do you think the xps line will be refreshed by then?
You have that picturesque 5'o clock shadow mate, how do you do it?
I sacrifice tiny children! Joking aside, I just use a trimmer
speaking of battery life and performance, is it better this model or the asus zenbook pro?
+Steven V I did a video comparing both of them you should check it out

Thank you!
guys I have one! and it's an amazing laptop but I did have a faulty battery inside initially but after they replaced no issue at all :)
Same it's pretty awesome! Thanks Matt for watching! Nice name btw = )
I just bought almost the same model except with i5 and 8gb of ram but i've already upgraded the ram but ya it plays the games I want with ease plus your right about the 4k display omg it is nice
Debating if I should get this or the new MacBook Pro when it comes out... Need it for music production
This will probably be refreshed as well in a few months with the new 1060 cards. But Apple is in dire need of a refresh as well. Hopefully, they announce new macbooks during the iPhone event.
Whats your battery life like? Can you charge this with the Anker 20000 USB-C portable power bank like the 12 inch macbook do you know?
Was the battery life consistent over the time ?
To be honest, I mostly have it plugged in, but the battery life is pretty consistent when i don't
Even better is it has a Thunderbolt 3 port @ 40gbps so you can add an external gpu later on; a big plus
+John PDoey I agree it has its advantages : )

I am between Dell XPS 15 32gb ram and 1tb SSD 2500$ and a new Macbook pro 15 2799$+200tax model. Never used a Dell laptop before. How is a trackpad if compare to macbook? How is a stability os system? Price is not important for me, but stability is very important, i have no time to play with windows explorer.exe and etc, that is why i am asking about windows. Because on my HP(it is powerful 16gb of ram , SSD and etc) windows is terrible.
how about temperature when gaming ?, is it comfortable ?
Great review
Thanks man!
I'm trying to decide between this and Asus ROG gl502, similarly priced, but the gl502 apparently has a tendency to get very hot
What do you use laptop mostly for? The Dell XPS 15 has a much more colour accurate screen and is better for graphical work. But you can get the GL502 with a GTX 1060 now which is significantly better for gaming.
Matthew Moniz well I need a laptop for college and it's going to be used mostly for video editing, and occasionally gaming
So I have a 9550 fhd 8g 256gb 56whr battery on order. I plan to purchase a 2.5" crucial mx300 sata ssd for storage and since the model comes with no hdd and just the empty slot, will I need to get any ssd bracket/adapter and sata connector to get it running? Appreciate any help. Thanks
Dell xps 15 vs Macbook Pro 2016? i guess we'll see what the choice will be.
Man I'm asking myself the same question
what is a scratch pad? i'm looking for a laptop to edit on using adobe premiere pro. I'm considering getting a used macbook pro 15" so i can also learn FCPX. How is Adobe on this machine? Can you connect a 4k TV to it to do color correction on your videos?
