ALCO - EMD sound battle. Who's got your vote? -(long version)

  • We are at Foleyet, Ontario on September 24, 1995 as a east bound CN train comes in for a crew change. Listen to the to beautiful sound of these two locomotives as they come in, and when they leave. The Alco (MLW) has my vote. It sounds spectacular, but then again, I am an Alco fan. Just some info on the HR-616. There was only 20 HR616 built. They where built in 1982, and retired early 1990's. The HR stood for high reliability, which they where not. Lots of electrical problems. The 616 was for 6 axles, 16 cylinder. Some where scraped, some went to NRE in Illinois. I can find nothing about them on their site. So who knows where they are now. Thanks for watching. The EMD is too consistent and well operating. As a jazz musician in the low brass sometimes you have to rip the notes. This MLW has shown that smoke and that classic Alco sound are appreciated. The closest we have today is a chugging GE, but unless if you blow the turbo this will be a memory long gone. You just have to love Alcos.

      Very well put. Alco’s are fascinating cause they’re brash, moody and raw, not to mention totally unpredictable. They sound different under different operating conditions and that smoke is just beautiful. Coolest locos in my opinion

    I’m a GM guy but always Alco, there is something about the sound of the Alco that is so incredible. I wish they were still around instead of GE.

    Alco #1 for sure. The HR616 is my all time favorite locomotive, followed by the C636. Next for me is the GE AC6000, love the sound of the 4 cycle. After that, would be the SD90MAC.
    Too bad all my favorites were plagued with problems. Now I feel sad.

      Bombardier was actually going to build an 18 cylinder HR618 with the 251 series prime mover. I believe that Fairbanks Morse of all companies would you believe have the rights to manufacture the 251 series prime mover. I believe they still offer the 18 cylinder version. I believe they also still make the opposed piston prime mover. The 251 series engine actually was very reliable and has been utilized in India to this day. My favorite Alco would be the C855. I would have loved to seen them in Action. The space shuttle transporter is basically a C855 with 2 251 series 16 cylinder engines.

    I remember the Alco RS 3s struggling to bring the CP "Starlight freight" up the grade into TH&B Aberdeen Yard every night around midnight. The years 1958/1959. The Engineers name was Jasper. He never needed an assist to help him in. He did it with those Alcos pulling their hearts out.

  • @strobx1
    @strobx1 14 лет назад

    I too am an ALCOholic. For sheer volume of sound you can't beat the Alco/MLW 4 stroke. But for Turbo sound the EMD wins. One of the things besides sound I like with Alco/MLW is the "turbo lag" which creates a lot of smoke as the throttle is opened up. Where as the EMD with its 2 stroke & turbosupercharger is quicker on the "boost" due to direct drive off the cam shaft therefore elliminating "turbo lag" with little or no smoke.

    Emd has a 2 stroke engine,,,,,with exhaust valves,,,,,and Alco,,,4 strokes,, 2 strokes,,,accelerates better than 4 strokes,,,less friction,,,logic,,,but Alco"s charger,,,i insist are bad,,,Don"t operate correct at low rpm with middle or full throttle,,,and some Cylinders at low rpm fails,,,,see the smoke,,,is alternatine,,,not continuous,,,bue Alco when the engine gain in rpm,,,,no more smoke,,,because the charger works correctly,,,, the EMd hasn"t this problems,,,accelerate with a little quantity of smoke at full throttle at low rpm. But,,,,,i"m Alco"s fan. his imperfect noise fascinates me.

    I find myself doing the same thing Triplex! Just can't get enough of the sound of these two together! The GE's use an FDL engine. The early GE's sound better than the new ones. That was before they put the silencers on the exhaust to quiet them down a bit. Those ne GE Gevos sound pretty good, and got a nice bark to them. But I still like the mushy sound of the ALCO chug.
