For anyone wondering what some superchat times are: - $5 USD is 2 minutes - $10USD is 5 minutes - $100USD is 1 hour, with each next $100 being another hour up to $500 for 5 hours
Damn, thats A) how to tier prices properly, and B) a big gap between platforms, especialy since twitch werent the first to do it. Google undercuts them without even trying.
IIRC, youtube also lists all of the superchats for the streamer to see easily. many streamers will have Q&A sessions where they go back and answer all the superchats.
@@sginrummy88 i always loved super chats for informative streams on yt like that. Even some gamers would read em all after like a round or in between, so convenient.
100 dollar option is what we call a decoy price in business. The purpose of this price is to just show how absurd it is and how much better the other price options are so that you would be incentivised to buy them, preferably in bigger quantities than when the prices would have been structured normally. So no, I think they did put some thought in it but still the elevated chats location is dumb af.
Something different to point out in the superchats is also the "color system", basically the amount of money you give is represented by a color, which is good just to pick up the attention of chat and streamers because the message appears in chat as a big colored block and stays on the top of it for a period of time, depending how much you donate, also that viewers can click and easily see what the person said in that superchat, and in my personal experience in multiple occasions i just click to see what people say, if is just a 100 dollars "LOL" or actually a kind message to the streamer thanking for the moment or whatever... but this just feels cold and worse, because, as mentioned in the video, you already have other ways to remark your massage in chat, even without money, and they tried to imitate the system but making it so easy to be ignored that baffles me. At least this will be writing in the history of internet for any future company in "what not to do as a company... the book" and people would learn from it
Also the fact that super chats stay there for a LONG time. If someone bought a $500 elevated chat on Twitch, it would stay up for between 12 1/2 to 50 minutes, whereas on RUclips, a $500 super chat stays up for FIVE HOURS.
I love the fact that donating multiple times using the lowest price for elevated chat would make your message stay longer than donating with the highest price. So, paying the $5 x 20 = $100 would make your message stay for 10 minutes instead of just flat out paying the $100 for 2.5 minutes.
Twitch was probably assuming there’d be a waitlist, so buying 2 elevated chats back-to-back wouldn’t work. But it’s not like there’s anybody who’d actually buy it, other than shameless self-promoters and bots, which are also serious problems on the platform. Twitch really is shooting themselves in the foot here…
They do that in some fast food place like Burger King(I think, haven’t been there in years). It was hella cheap for 10 nuggets but 20 is way more than getting 2 10 pieces, but it works for the lazy people who just say 20 and pay more. It’s a purposeful loophole for dumb people to pay more.

You would think that having more diverse content would help grow the platform, but I guess Twitch’s analytics show that funneling the viewers towards the top creators is more profitable?
actually, when you host. some times when you join in a channel that's hosting, your chatting in the person chat not the person they are hosting. so your mesages go through. hosting in general helps in the kingmaker system, which is great for popular streamer

Twitch will go the way of MySpace and LiveJournal and all the other long gone social media sites like them.
Idk why anyone has ever applied “they’re too big to fail” to twitch. That phrase is reserved for publicly traded companies like apple, google, Facebook etc. which have so much money they don’t know what to do with it. Twitch has never been close to nor ever will be in that category of businesses.
Twitch doesn't take into account of how fast chats can be in big streamers. You could spend $100 for a message to XQC but he wouldn't see it because a) he is playing a game and b) the chat moves faster than Usain Bolt trying to escape a pack of lions.
Yeah because with an audience that big, slow mode only truly gives people cool down on chat. And since there’s so many people already, even if each person sends one message only, the chat still goes by terribly fast.
I find it hilarious how just last week Charlie was talking about how the twitch chat is one of the few things twitch has over youtube streaming and now they're trying to implement features for chat that are still worse than youtube in every way. At this point I'm just waiting for youtube to drop a banger update just to rub it in twitch's face
RUclips needs to figure out how to promote interesting streams to people. But that's a much simpler problem to solve on than Twitch's ad troubles. Twitch implementing additional ways to get between the streamer and their fair share of the revenue is putting the cart before the horse, and it's killing the platform in real time.
Twitch is really getting themselves killed, which is gonna lead to RUclips getting a monopoly on all things video streaming :( RUclips sucks as well so I really hope this doesn't happen

@@bohdankim381 isnt It true RUclips is stealthily testing 5 unskippable ads on a row on some videos? They could pull the same stuff after they got the monopoly
I literally thought to myself while watching a RUclips stream “man I’m really glad we don’t have super chats on Twitch, having that huge, constant distraction would be a disaster”
superchats are pretty good actually, they serve a purpose and they do it well and dont clutter chat much since they have their own space for it... twitch's implementation is awful though
On youtube they are fine, I don't see a problem with them here? They fly by at the same speed as everyone else and go to the top, where it's mostly for the streamer to see, they aren't noticeable. You won't be "spammed" because... they cost money lol? It's not like those fucking emotes being spammed in chat. Also YOU choose how much money to give, there is no "minimum" bullshit or set "prices", you give whatever amount you want. It makes the streamer some decent money.
Another problem I have with elevated chat is if you notice, they don’t pop. They all look like standard point redeems. On RUclips Super Chats are actually seperated by colors. They pop, make you kinda show off. RUclips specifically designed them that way, and it’s the same with Super Thanks.

I think what you said about the engineering team coming up with the pricing is pretty likely. I think this because I am a software developer and this pricing scheme is probably the sort of thing I would come up with when I needed to deliver some feature and nobody told me what the pricing should be. If that truly is the case then I feel bad for the devs at Twitch because I know from experience that one of the most aggravating things to deal with as a programmer is rapidly changing or vague business requirements.
No not even close. It's a manipulation tactic, to trick people into buying 5 chats vs 1 because the average moron will go "100 dollars for 2.5 minutes, shoot I can get that if i buy 5 thirty second runs" when they look at the pricing, so when the consumer came with the intent to buy one, they see that they can "cheat the system" and buy 5 times the amount they came to buy to get a "good deal". BLIND AF if you cant see that
If a developer is deciding the prices then something is really wrong at twitch. This should be something that the higher ups at the company are coming up with.
@@1ben99 IT IS, It is intended to provoke people (mostly children) into buying FIVE TIMES what they normally would under the guise of "cheating the system and a good deal'

Twitch really is shooting themselves in the foot here…
I had often thought to go into twitch eventually, but now I understand it's better to stick with youtube live. Great videos on the twitch drama you've been releasing recently.
Y'know, normally when companies start being greedy it's usually when they're the only place giving out a particular product or service, not when half of their consumer base is threatening to leave your platform for a competitor. It's astonishing, really.
Have you just discovered that a streaming company is trying to make money from people watching streamers? You actually thought it was a charity gamer site or something before?
I've got to stick up for another engineering team here. The bulk of what they're being paid to do isn't features. It's making improvements to core functionality and stability. Things that go completely unnoticed when they're working well. But it makes a big difference whether there's a 35 second broadcast delay, or a 2 second one. Twitch engineers have done great work. Most features take relatively little time to implement. It's just hard to find ideas for features which will actually add value to the service. A lot of potential features just aren't that desired, and don't do much to justify the cost of maintaining them.
I feel like Twitch has bad net code, youtube livestreams never buffer even on 3 wifi bars and caffee internet, but on twitch it always buffers for me no matter how good my connection is
can tell you one feature right now. Stream rewind in the player, just like in YT. There you have one of the most desired and substantial options they could add. Although it isnt up to the engineers, that fact still stands
I just wanna point out that a lot of streamers already have a system in place where you pay like $1 and your message not only gets shown on the stream itself but the streamer often has it read out by text-to-speech. This is the most needless thing in existence that literally nobody is going to put a single penny into.
My favourite thing about the cost of the elevated chat thing is that whenever you see a “deal” like that it’s supposed to save you money. Like “yeah you could pay $25 in multiple $5 instances to have your message stay on screen for 2.5 minutes, but instead, if you just pay a flat $20 it stays there for the same amount of time” But no, Twitch is run by monkeys.
Thats the trick, people go to look at the pricing because they probably want to just buy one, then they see that they can "cheat the system" and get a little discount by buying 5, and so twitch manipulates someone instead of just buying ONE they buy FIVE because the consumer gets tricked into thinking THEY are pulling one over on twitch
Seeing all of these recent changes on twitch unfold is like watching someone stuck in the middle of a frozen lake falling on their ass repeatedly until they finally break the ice and drown
I don't see Twitch dying anytime soon. Mixer was supposed to be the next Twitch and Microsoft shut it down after only 3 years. DLive backstabbed their community so they left Trovo is cool but only South Americans are on there
So the chat is really cluttered and the actual stream is going to have more ads. The viewing experience is already worse, the streaming experience has been made worse, and now the chatting experience. The most entertaining thing on Twitch now is split between the UI, the ads themselves, and the cognitive overload that is the stream outside of theater mode. (Oh wait, the stream already is because of the intrusive 6-in-a-row ads that run for 2 minutes a piece with no skips.) The only party who can capitalize off of this is RUclips, from viewers and streamers leaving Twitch.
I can't wait for Twitch to fix the elevated chat by making everything but the 2 1/2 minute option more expensive so the longer option seems like a deal
It's insane that Twitch is willingly shanking itself into irrelevance. They went to Krypton and obtained the power of gods, then decided years later to drink shots of liquid Kryptonite, smoke Kryptonite cigarettes, and host a rave in a room with Kryptonite laser lights and fog machines out of boredom....

We would normally just pop in to where our friends were and hang out with whatever random person they were viewing. I fell that hurts smaller streamers.

$100 is dirt for him…. wtf are you talking about
For anyone wondering what some superchat times are:
- $5 USD is 2 minutes
- $10USD is 5 minutes
- $100USD is 1 hour, with each next $100 being another hour up to $500 for 5 hours
Damn, thats A) how to tier prices properly, and B) a big gap between platforms, especialy since twitch werent the first to do it. Google undercuts them without even trying.
Wpah thats alot
IIRC, youtube also lists all of the superchats for the streamer to see easily. many streamers will have Q&A sessions where they go back and answer all the superchats.

At least this will be writing in the history of internet for any future company in "what not to do as a company... the book" and people would learn from it
We need a petition to get James Corden sent to North Sentinel island as a cannibalistic offering. Imagine how many tribes he could feed?
Also the fact that super chats stay there for a LONG time. If someone bought a $500 elevated chat on Twitch, it would stay up for between 12 1/2 to 50 minutes, whereas on RUclips, a $500 super chat stays up for FIVE HOURS.
also it color codes each amount depending on what currency is used
People said the same thing about Blizzard and look how little it did.
Also they last longer,a 100$ would stay up for an hour
I love the fact that donating multiple times using the lowest price for elevated chat would make your message stay longer than donating with the highest price. So, paying the $5 x 20 = $100 would make your message stay for 10 minutes instead of just flat out paying the $100 for 2.5 minutes.

Twitch is really getting themselves killed, which is gonna lead to RUclips getting a monopoly on all things video streaming :(

Cap because twitch worked hard
I feel like Twitch has bad net code, youtube livestreams never buffer even on 3 wifi bars and caffee internet, but on twitch it always buffers for me no matter how good my connection is
I seem to remember a day that streamers couldn't go live for hours. Not good.
@@hotdogman7442 because yt has way more delay
☠️
can tell you one feature right now.
Watch them actually limit the usage of the 5 dollar elevated chat instead of actually fixing their prices.
My favourite thing about the cost of the elevated chat thing is that whenever you see a “deal” like that it’s supposed to save you money. Like “yeah you could pay $25 in multiple $5 instances to have your message stay on screen for 2.5 minutes, but instead, if you just pay a flat $20 it stays there for the same amount of time”
But no, Twitch is run by monkeys.

(Oh wait, the stream already is because of the intrusive 6-in-a-row ads that run for 2 minutes a piece with no skips.) @@thefinalsif the one problem I find with Tumblr is that you cant search for NSFW tumblrs and even with the SFW filter turned off It still says "This Tumblr has potentially delicate content". Being more Than 20, I already know.
@@gabrielpineirogarcia2078 I mean isn't that the whole reason Tumblr dropped in mass popularity because of the great nsfw purge they did a while ago? Tumblr hasn't been the place to go to for nsfw content for a long time.
@@arikiwiiwiiwi2602 I thought they stepped back on their statement after the loss of all those people
Twitch is in a literal spiral right now. Losses , losses and more L's

my peabrain actually didnt catch the loophole but when you pointed it out i just about died of laughter erupting frim within
When they got rid of friends, earlier this year, it ruined Twitch for me. My friends and I could never find each other and hang out unless we had a 3rd party program, like Discord, to meet up. We would normally just pop in to where our friends were and hang out with whatever random person they were viewing. I fell that hurts smaller streamers.
I don’t use twitch or twitter but thanks to Charlie I’m always updated to what’s happening on the internet
DONT READ MY NAMES.😑

You’re doing it right
@Mason i don’t remember asking
I'm convinced the team who made this just chose those prices as placeholders for the financial part of twitch to decide. But then the financial part of twitch just rolled out the update without even looking at anything.
that would make sense
Im better than twitch
The guy who immediately paid for $100 eLe chat immediately after he spells out how silly they are got me laughing. I thought some rich kid was trolling but seemed genuine. I really feel like the crazy price scale is to bait really down bad dudes following their favorite hot tub streamers
