I totally feel your pain and disappointment here. You were excited for it because it was Japanese week and then nothing but a jumper and kimono like outfit and a badly pronounced konnichiwa to greet you. I've seen how many Japanese do love seeing your culture go abroad and spread around the world and it makes a lot of sense that you'd be upset seeing it go horribly wrong like this.
They put a lot more effort into making the set look pretty than they did researching the actual topic of the show, that's for sure.
As a Filipino, I've never been so disappointed from seeing this abomination. If they do a Filipino week and they fuck that up, I'm gonna call President Duterte.

In America most people think everything is Chinese. Korean, Japanese, Vietnamese,... they just call it or the people Chinese and say stuff like "same difference". But if you called an American Canadian they'd lose it.

My step dad is Korean/Japanese (Don't ask how that happened), and he laughed so hard when he saw this on Netflix
It feels fairly iconic of British cooking. Built an imperial empire, pilfered the world's spices, still manages to fuck them all up or not use them. My favorite is how so much tea is burnt because steeped wrong and then they just yeet milk and honey into it.
I think it's normal to be angry at that video. Japan has a rich culinary tradition, It's like making a french week and they ask them to make pizza

Culture is a person who has earned it to use it to create their own favorite hobbies and experiences grow rapidly if it is your own ancestors skills past down to you or anyone. I feel like the point of the show is for people to not prepare for what is coming and they just make it spontaneous. The problem comes when they don't know what traditional foods are for a special "Japanese week" event, and the producers picking a Chinese inspired food for that day makes it worse and more confusing for the contestants. So what I take away from it, is the producers want to add more cultural influence from other cultures outside the UK. They need to do their own research first and make sure they are not insulting a culture while trying to bring more culture to their show.

Most Japanese desserts that are more traditional use entirely different techniques than Western desserts because they are rice-based, and most wheat-based desserts (and buns) in fact came from overseas. So it makes complete sense to me that they would look at the range of wheat-based Japanese options and land on something that is not, in fact, Japanese.
It's true that these buns are very common in Japan, ranging from in convenience stores anywhere to being a staple of rural life, but the more rural method is to raise the dough with baking soda, not yeast. That said, most people agree that it tastes better with yeast, and that is the more traditional (by which I mean Chinese) method.
So I understand how they arrived at this. I just think somebody messed up, not renaming the week or thinking harder about what culture's food they actually wanted to try. Did they even have a consultant? Because it seems to me that a person with basic knowledge of Japanese cooking could have given them several options of rice-based Japanese dishes that aren't too crazy to try.

It's funny how Uncle Rodger criticized the fact they looked like cute animals since this was the closest thing to resemble a steamed bun in Japan.
Yes i agree cute character is the Japanese modified version of Chinese steam bun. Uncle Roger just want to criticize everything for video purpose, or perhaps this character just divorce not long ago, bad temper mean character.

Yeah, i am thinking why did they choose steamed bun, the first thing i think about steamed bun was China. Steamed bun originated from China and was never a Japanese thing. Why don't they choose Anpan bread or Dorayaki or Manju or Mochi, they're popular especially Dorayaki. I mean this would be a good chance for them to introduced Japanese confectionary as they're not very well known but no, instead they created more Asian confusion. Red bean or Adzuki and Matcha was easily the most common filling in Japanese confectionary despite Matcha came from China, it had a long history in Japan and enter Japan in 1191 through Zen Buddhism and in 14th to 16th century became important part of Japanese Upper Echelons Culture.
Also, Panda ?? Why not use Sakura or Tanuki ?? They could also use Peach as a homage to Momotaro Tales, beside domesticated Peach have also been cultivated in Japan as early as Jomon to Yayoi Period.
Seriously, I came up with a better challenge schedule just from the first "Japanese Baking" Google result.
Signature challenge: Mochi. Design your own fillings, make them look pretty, etc.
Technical challenge: Japanese Cheesecake.
Showstopper challenge: Matcha flavour. Tiramisu, swiss roll, crepe cake, there are lots of possibilities!

Thanks for giving your reaction to this Asagi. As a British Japanophile, I found the original embarassing: so badly researched and produced. I wanted to message to say there are plenty of British people who know this is wrong, please don’t be too sad! x
As a Filipino-American living in Hawaii (lots of Filipinos and Japanese living in Hawaii), the way these people were making steam buns really had me disappointed. Steam buns are among the many foods I grew up with and some of the ingredients were very questionable.
Side note: I recommend trying Sio Pao. Sio Pao is the Filipino version of steamed bun. Kinda sorta like the Japanese Nikuman.
Japanese culture is very unique, there's no excuse for the show's abysmal failure to present something that's more uniquely Japanese
Sound like a wehaboo! Japanese culture is both unique and not. If you bothered to study it at an academic level you would’ve known the roots of many elements of Japanese culture that have evolved over time. At the end of the day only Japanese nationalists and wehaboo worship Japanese culture.

well if you want to see how Tang, Song China practiced their culture, you can look at traditional Japanese culture.... lots of elements from those times
See as I've worked around the BBC a few times I'll tell you they're a fan of gimmicks over accuracy. If you have a unique idea to spice up a show do it regardless of if you do it well that's what producers want to see from their writing teams
I think you are right to feel like that. They should have consulted with a Japanese cook to help them look at a few dishes to guide them. And it would have given the contestants a few ingredients to look at. And they should have given them a base recipe to start them off. Because much of the Japanese week was assuming that Chinese food was the same which it isn't. This is another form of colonialism. In the 1800s British people couldn't pronounce Chinese names and so they gave people English names. Making them feel ashamed of our own language, names and heritage. This also plays into other aspects of Asian and indigenous cultures. Fusing and importing colonial assumptions into food, language, culture and our aspects of Asian identities. In this video Japanese identity was lost and miss represented. Giving Japanese no voice at all. Just using the name Japanese to make it sound exotic and Asian. Giving it some type of Eastern Authenticity which it surely isn't. Hijacking other forms of identity and importing their assumptions into other people's identity. This has been going on for years. What they should have done was say they are going to make an Asian inspired steam bun with a British flavor.
Asagi was visibly upset! The BBC probably thought that by using the word "Japanese" , they would get more views. It would have been better to just call this "Asian Week", and avoid any controversy..
I’m Chinese and when I first saw this video by Uncle Roger I was not mad but felt genuinely sorry for the Japanese people who are watching this at the same time. God it’s gonna be so painful when you see your culture being misrepresented so badly in so many ways.

I’m from the Midwest of the United States. My family is super white. Can confirm my grandparents also do this! More than once after my sister graduated high school, we had a male waiter, and my grandparents were like *wink wink* at her and then would ask about boyfriends and stuff... she hates it so much! Luckily since I’m the youngest they probably won’t pester me about it until my sister gets married xD
I understand that feeling of being misrepresented, for example as a Mexican I feel the same when people think Taco bell tacos are authentic when they’re an adaptation to the American market which is not bad, but it’s not “the real thing”. It’s sad that a professional production doesn’t do its homework to understand what are the authentic recipes of a certain culture.

As a Brit I was very confused watching this on TV. You can usually get Japanese ingredients in our supermarkets without any problems, so I don't know how this show got it so wrong.
It's ok. As an american I know taco bell isn't authentic mexican food. One day I want to try actual tacos from a family mexican restaurant or somewhere close to it.
@@RoseB45 you will love it, plus there's a LOT of different types of tacos so if you don't like one, you can always try another XD! there's beef , pork , chicken , lamb , cheese , beans , there's fried , steamd ,grilled and even filled with almost any dish , then you top it with a nice salsa , a nice cold soda or juice and you're good to go :P ... finish it with some churros or pudding or ice cream for dessert , bro... fat heaven XD!

Don't worry Asagi. I'm Chinese and I don't think it's Japanese's people's fault at all that these cooks think pandas are from Japan. They just need to do some more learning about how to differentiate the different cultures. And it's also the show's fault for not hiring even one Japanese person to work with on a Japanese week cooking show.

The guy with the weird shirt is named Noel Fielding. He's a comedian and is famous for his ridiculous outfits and many wacky personas. I highly suggest you watch a tv show called "The Mighty Boosh". It's one of the things he's most famous for and is VERY British.
Here in USA, we also make fun of the British for being shit at food.

As an Englishman I can't say how much I am embarrassed by this, disappointed and really really annoyed by the fact that a national broadcaster has put out this garbage.
It was Channel 4 though, and not the BBC - so at least my taxes are not paying for this garbage.
People here know sushi is Japanese, I expected to see alot of sushi at least. And buns are more a Chinese food, though often you find buns just labeled as 'Asian buns'.
And then to add American and Indian food as well? WTF

To be fair, Nikuman is the Japanese version of steam bun. What really got me laughing (though not necessarily in an amused manner) was the part where the guy was cooking lamb meat put in lamb-shaped bun. Which I have to agree with Uncle Roger. That is creepy AF.
I'm saying this as an American of Filipino descent: That would be like making Siopao (Filipino version of steam bun) with the bun looking like a cute piglet but the filling is pork. That might sound good on paper but I would feel uneasy eating it.

@@nicholascauton9648 the pork one was the same ;) sadly it was not shown, I'd like to see it cut in half. With probably the waiting for cleaning up the stage, the filling got trough the bun, so at least it should have a decent filling ;)

@@donb7519 I'm not into Sushi much but I also know some japanese foods like Ramen, Mocchi etc, mostly due mangas and animes or some japanese RUclipsr ;) For a baking show it's probably really a stupid idea to make a whole week with that theme. And also the traditional fillings might not be really good for a british audience. I mean red beans* or something like that... the audience can't imagine the taste... Asagi did mentioned it, and I've seen these kind of foods in shows about/in Japan. Steamed buns, or animes a fish styled backed good. With a curry filing or red beans?

Hi europe here. UK is known for a lot of thing's like: war, inventors, engineering. Strong Navy... but not 4 cocking or good taste. The only edible thinks in Britain are sweets and fish and "chips".
So no surprise they mess up almost everything if u let them in a kitchen.

You can get "Katsu Curry" ramen and instant noodles in the UK that are just noodles and seasoning.. It's not Katsu, it's just curry!
Especially funny given the multitude of Japanese restaurants in the UK (at least in the London area) and that even fast food chains like Wasabi use breaded cutlets for their katsu. As the guy's 'favorite meal' you'd think he must have known that minced chicken wasn't correct xD

Totally agree with you on that. Regional food is just that, regional! A country's cuisine is just the same, I used to be a professional chef, and it used to make me sad when I was asked for say a traditional British dish, and when I served it, was told it wasn't what they were expecting. Hiayaaa!

I'm Japanese but I think the curry buns are good.
I know buns came from China, but as for the curry buns, they originated in Japanese convenience stores.
So I think curry buns can be called a Japanese dish.
I watched the whole bake off for this year, so when Japnese week came around the new feed was definitely...Interesting and I can see why it may be seen as insensitive with there choice of flavour.
I think the only reason they had a Japanese week in the first place is because Paul Hollywood had made a wee series travelling Japan (again mixed reviews but but funny cringe for me to enjoy)
Also (having a laugh moment) How dare Uncle Roger DARE talk about Vamipre Lord Noel Shirt, His style is impeccable

I remember in 4th and 5th grade, my class was really interested in Japanese culture, but they couldn’t tell the difference between Chinese and Japanese. Because of that, I actually learned Hiragana and Katakana to show them the difference. Recently, I realized that I’ve never seen any Japanese hiragana or katakana that I couldn’t read other than when I learned the first time. There was an assignment about WW II Hiroshima and Nagasaki and I remember writing the names in hiragana every time expecting extra points.

I share your disappointment. I love Japanese and Chinese food. I've seen and tasted variations with their styles of cuisines along with specific techniques they use to make a dish authentic. It's why I'm deeply appreciative and impressed with Gordon Ramsey along with people like him who go as far as travelling around the world to learn the ways of different cuisines.
I totally understand, as a mexican we have similar but also very different cultures and food from other latin countries so i can relate and if I was watching this show I would have believed that this was Japanese food - haiya! I like Uncle Roger he is helping people learn to use the right words and ingredients if you want to call it Japanese, Chinese etc...we are learning to appreciate and respect everybody's culture through his comedy.

Regarding the thing that it can be offensive to confuse different Asian peoples for a wrong ethnicity.
Background: I'm Polish, 32 years old now. When I was a little kid, maybe 5 years old or so, when our country barely became liberated from Soviet occupation also 5 years earlier. We didn't have much wordly stuff yet, weren't accustomed with a lot of things. But it was early days of capitalism so stuff was going wild, everything new from abroad incoming. And at that time I loved Godzilla movies we could find in local rental VHS stores and martial arts movies. I loved ninjas. I loved the vintage animes like General Daimos and Tsubasa and Yattaman and all other stuff that were already old AF in Japan but for us they were the new exciting thing. My parents enrolled me to an Aikido school.
So now a memory of how I once f*cked up lol. We didn't have any Japanese restaurants at the time, but we had some Chinese and Vietnamese ones. So my dad figured it's the next best thing for me to have an Asian experience and took me to one. It was all so exciting and fascinating to me! And the waiter came. It was the first time I saw an Asian person in real life instead of a TV screen. And I blurted out: IS MISTER CHINESE OR JAPANESE? My dad went pale and immediately told me to shut up and was apologising to the guy. I didn't understand what's happening. The guy just politely accepted the apology and took the order though no problem. And then dad told me to never make questions like that. Explained how that during WWII Japan and China were enemies and horrible things happened during that time. That it's as if someone asked me if I'm Polish or German. I didn't fully understand the magnitude of it at the time, but I just accepted the fact that it was a rude thing and that I shouldn't do that. But when we were waiting for food I was just too excited and couldn't hold it in and started to count to ten out loud in Japanese (learnt during the aikido classes). I didn't realise at the time but my dad says that the staff noticed and they were looking at me and poking each other who didn't notice to look at me, saying something in Chinese between themselves when they heard me yelling out ITCHI, NEE! SAN! SHEE! (etc) lmao. We don't know what they were thinking, they didn't really say anything to us. I just hope they understood that I was a little kid that just didn't know better at the time and it was just a very faux pas innocent way of showing appreciation lol it was also the 1st time in my life I had some duck and it was so good that to this day it's one of my favourite meats.
On a side note, that makes me wonder now, do the Japanese like eating duck?

in romania, we have a "tradition" food called sarmale....(meat roll rapped in sour caggabe leafs)...in fact, its not a traditional recepie, its a dish that came from turkey (middle east), but we say its a romanian dish.....There are a lot of people who get very very upset if you correct them and tell them that sarmale is not a romanian dish :))
Three types of people you'll find in British cooking
- Do it properly or don't do it at all
- Make a fusion of different culture's food to appreciate the best of each
- Those countries are close to each other right? They must be exactly the same then, who cares about their culture anyway

I lived in China for 7 years and I can tell you 100% for sure that they also have buns you can buy there with animal faces on them. They aren't everywhere, but they exist!
