Making Records with Eric Valentine All-American Rejects "Gives You Hell"

  • I do a deep dive into the recording and mixing of the song "Gives You
Hell" with special guests Nick Wheeler and Mike Kennerty from the band All-American Rejects. This is another long one (3 hours) with tons of pictures, explanations and stories from the band and I about making the whole record. Just a heads up... I had some issues with the audio recording. I think it is all intelligible but I ain't gonna get any Grammy nominations for the engineering on this one haha!

I was really into this band as a 4th and 5th grader, and then I got into audio engineering as a young adult and now my childhood and current life are colliding.

Same, and when I was younger I did not pay attention to the production even remotely. Now I hear it in a totally different way, and mostly listen to it out of respect for the brilliant engineering.

Hands down the best video I've seen on RUclips, out of probably a thousand I've watched for breaking down production techniques and being able to look into the process of some masters and especially not trying to sell some crappy plugin.. Thanks for sharing man, cool as f. I hope your channel blows up

Really can't thank you enough for taking the time to do these videos Sir. I'm learning so much from them (at least I'm trying too!!) and I'm also sure that it won't be long before alot more people find this valuable corner of the internet. You and you're work are a true inspiration, many thanks again and wishing you all of the bestest from the UK.

That was fun, Eric! I’m glad I got to see that. You probably don’t remember, but I sent you an email back in 2009 asking how you got that snare sound and the sound of the drums in general. You were gracious enough to respond with a break down and your “sheet of paper” trick on the snare.
I loved seeing/hearing an expansion of that email.
    Thank you so much!!

Aside from all of the incredible content it's just nice to see the smiles on all of the band members faces whenever they're in the room. You can tell that they enjoyed the process, and Nick and Mike are all smiles throughout this video. So good!

Hey Eric! You made an interesting statement around the 7:45 mark where you said that meeting the band is something that you make it a point to get a feel for what’s going to happen. It would be so insightful to hear how you approach that process with working with a new band and what your “checklist” is before committing to something new! I apologize if you’ve already covered that but I totally appreciate everything that you’ve done on this channel.

I'm going to need to see a doctor soon. My brain is exploding every 20 minutes watching these videos. The bit about why our standard tuning method sucks sometimes and shouldn't be standard. The bit about stereo mic'ing the acoustic guitar from top to bottom. And mostly the HUGE EQ moves you make sometimes to make it work in the mix. You've given me permission to be more extreme without thinking I suck at mic placement all the time.

Or why certain arrangement choices were made, was the Wurlitzer in this song there from the band’s demo or was it out there during the production of the song. Anyhow, great job on this show!

Hey Eric, do you generally do a lot of punching to get guitars tracked in tune (i.e., tuning to the different chords within a progression)? Also, what's the deciding factor for changing guitar/bass strings? I've always swapped them out before tracking. This was a great one -- the AAR record is like a textbook to me. Thank you for the great videos!

Dear Eric, I am currently struggling to understand how you achieve that midrange-y guitar tone with an emphasis on the attack you get on so many records. Here you mention you used the Boss Parametric EQ pedal, I read that during the QOTSA record you achieved it exclusively with mic positioning(does that mean you used no EQ guitar pedals on that record?). Are there any specific frequencies you like to boost for that? Is it better to do it before the amp, at the amp, or on the console? Is there any general rule you follow or do you have a few things to try to get that percussive attack emphasized? Thanks so much in advance!!
