Hello All!! Welcome to the debut episode of "Making Records"!! This deep dive into the song "All Star" was really fun and took over an hour to get through everything so will definitely get your fill of All Star, if you haven't already :)

      Time flies. Here's what I remember about this song . . .
      1) Gregs very small recording set up in his Nor Cal garage and the album was done, he was irritated Interscope asked for a "hit" and told me "I'm going to add everything expected, scratching, hand claps...and played me parts of it."
      2) The ride to LA, to bring it to record company... as he started to talk about it, before playing it for me, I said " don't talk just play it" after I said some form of " wow, thats going to do what they wanted it to do, sure hit"
      3) While in the studio visiting, not knowing the song You asked " can anyone whistle, and me blowing it on the group hand clap too.
      4) It charted so well, they wouldn't release the next song, also a bit irritating but one of those obvious blessings with a rash.
      5) Being at Disney world, Harwell cracking jokes not Mickey approved and Greg laughing saying " oh well, we never asked to be a family band"
      6) filming the video at Universal, by the leave it to beaver house, Mc G and joy riding a Golf cart.
The stories go for miles and the memories and adventures are a wonderful bi product of you and Greg's chemistry. Super fun to revisit.

Eric Valentine God Bless you brother... as a guitarist, writer and producer from London UK, I am absolutely in awe of your creativity and passion for making unique, detailed and interesting recorded experiences. I found hardly anything about you in recent years, so your new channel and top quality content is absolutely mind blowing for me. Much love and respect ✊🙂 x

What I notice in the song more clearly now is there is a unique way that it sounds like a record that is stuck repeats. It does it with the drums sometimes and sometimes the guitar notes repeat the same couple of notes, as if they're stuck in a short loop before going on to repeat the entire loop/phrase.

I have a Mosrite copy and I love it. I couldn't imagine how great it would be to have a real one. Great choice for a vintage sound putting flat wound strings on it. Reminds me of John Lennon's sound - he put thick flatwound 11s on his guitar.

I’ve always loved the double tracked stereo bass track in the chorus, kinda surprised it isn’t present here. Always thought of it as one of those crazy EV tricks to make choruses stand out, and have used it myself too.
Please dust off those T-Ride master tapes and show us an example of those supernatural harmonies and gated rhythm guitars (which have now become an industry standard, you were so much ahead of the curve)

This is kinda random, but... is it possible you were a drum teacher on a little curved section of street in the middle of a well known university town on the west coast (being vague lest the details would be doxing you, though I could easily be more specific), circa... mid 1980s? And you had an infinity mirror for your band? I randomly think of you when I see infinity mirrors, and then also I did when "The Daily Doug" (Doug Helvering) did a video about a "Black Page" -- which I seem to recall you mentioning, though perhaps a different one than he was reviewing? (I recall it referring to Moby Dick, I thought... though for Doug, it's a Zappa thing; perhaps I just mixed it up?)
Anyway, if that was you, hi. :) No idea if you'd remember me, even if it was you, and it's fine if you don't, but... the memory got me curious, and I attempted to look you up, and... I think I might have the right person. :)
