  • I decided to explore the world of Kydex! I think it will add a new level to my knives. Very simple to build,Rubber pad, scrap 3/4 plywood, some hinges. The sheaths will be a learning experience. Thanks for watching!

This is a great idea. I was thinking of trying to modify an old pancake maker into a press but this looks like a lot less work. Thanks for sharing. God Bless.

Pancake maker, hmmm,, I bet the clamp system on that would be good.

That was my original thought Ricky, my only concern was that I didn’t know how thick the padding had to be ?

@@FiresideCoffee Most how to videos I watched used 3 layers of the thin HF floor mats, the kneeling pad I used seems about the same thickness. You can also get mat just for a press. But im poor. 😆

Aren’t we all Ricky lol. I may venture into this idea a little more. I’ll let you know if it works, maybe I’ll do a video lol

Very cool! I've never fooled with Kydex, but as an old dog, I'm always open to new tricks. Good stuff, sir!

Thanks for sharing your approach. I’ve always wanted to try this. I remember when Kydex first became popular 30 years or so ago, I bought some and tried my hand with it. I made a simple sheath for a steak knife sized knife. Heated with a blowtorch or hairdryer and manually folded it around the blade. Attached the two sides with short leather rivets. This was long before the days of RUclips and I didn’t think of the press idea. Having watched many videos of presses, I’m wondering if the pads you used have too much flex in them, in other words, are they too thick and/or too soft to make a super detailed impression? Maybe some others who know better can chime in here. I have a couple of sheets of Kydex laying around and I’d like to make a small press myself. I think it makes a great sheath, even if it’s not the prettiest material. Seems like a Kydex sheath with some drain holes or vents would be the ideal sheath for any knife used around water like a bait cutter or filet knife. Looking forward to seeing how your ideas develop. I have to say, I hope you don’t entirely give up on leather as an option. Your leatherwork approach makes great sheaths. 👍

Will the blade rub against the grommets when you slide it in or out? It looks like a nice material for an all-weather sheath.

No, I put to many grommets on this one, and not the right size. I have some proper grommets and flaring tools on order. Then ill try It again
