  • The largest crane on the Eastern Seaboard was being transported to Baltimore so crews on Friday can begin removing the wreckage of a collapsed highway bridge that has halted a search for four workers still missing days after the disaster and blocked the city's vital port from operating.

Correct - they need the much larger ocean-going cranes that are mounted to a much larger barge. These are used to assemble oil platforms. The dangerous part will be cutting the bridge into pieces small enough to fit on a barge for removal.

(capable of lifting 1,000 short tons with its 231 ft-long boom

It depends on how they want to do it but were it me, large sections of the bridge would be lifted onto large barges and floated to the shore for demolition. Need something McDermott sized, Lampson Transi-Lift sized, American 11320 Sky Horse or a couple Manitowoc 4600's. In the world of heavy lift, this isnt all that big of a project.

Not to mention mitigating danger for casulties during the process. It goes without saying this job is a heavy lift. Maybe if available an off shore mega drilling rig those guys are huge. 1000 tons of lifting capacity is not that bad at all. There are larger crane vessels such as the Sleipnir. However, the Sleipnir is located in Rotterdam. Over 4000 nm from Baltimore. In addition, the Sleipnir has a draft of 36 meters. That's probably way too much for this location. The problem is that almost all larger crane vessels are currently in the North Sea. The Seven Borealis, a 5000 ton crane vessel, is currently the closest in Bridgetown Barbedos. But that too is still 1800 nm to Baltimore
