    You actually see the moment Dreykov loses the ring! When he slams his hand on the pad to call for the Widows/ring the alarm, Natasha slams her hand on his like she's trying to stop him, but actually she's picking his ring off as their hands separate.

    It’s always so crazy to me that they reference Dreykov (or rather his daughter) all the way back in the Avengers when Loki was trying to manipulate Natasha by listing her worst crimes. To get payoff so many years later is both very cool and very sad. It shouldn’t have taken until after the character’s death for her to get her own movie!

      This whole movie was written around a throwaway line Whedon wrote in Avengers, there was nothing behind the line nor any intention to build from it. Cracks me up.

      @@Davemented There's a surprising amount of storytelling that happens like that. You drop in little throw-away pieces to add texture to scenes and give an impression of the world being bigger than just what's immediately present... and then later, you (or someone else working on related stories) grabs those elements and builds on them.

      I just wish we got to see more of the backstory in flashbacks already Maude the current story. That would’ve made it a lot more emotionally impactful if we got to see it. Especially after all the stories with her and Barton. Jeremy definitely should’ve made an appearance. That as well as doing a much better job showcasing the main villain a bit more and fleshing our task master better.

    Well the mystery of Budapest is solved after so many years. Suddenly the off hand reference in the first Avengers movie suddenly makes sense. • @MarcoMM1
    @MarcoMM1 9 месяцев назад +12

    Great reaction like always, this movie beautifully honors the iconic Natasha Romanoff, who finally receives the respectful, worthy solo film that her unforgettable legacy always deserved. Scarlett Johansson shines one last time. There are some fun-facts about it, the film was almost made before the MCU even existed, in 2004, David Hayter struck a deal with Lionsgate to write and direct a film featuring Black Widow. In 2006, Lionsgate dropped the project, and while Hayter and Marvel tried, they couldn’t find another studio to finance the film. Hayter moved on, though he said he was “heartbroken” about it. Johansson picked the director, eventually, Marvel whittled those directors down to three names: Amma Asante, Maggie Betts, and Cate Shortland. Johansson was a fan of Shortland’s film Lore and was the one who reached out to her about directing the film. That sway likely helped, as Shortland did end up getting the directorial job. Johansson, an executive producer on the film, and Feige decided the best time to set Black Widow would be after the events of Captain America: Civil War. Given the character’s death in Avengers: Endgame, a contemporary film was impossible. Early on, there was going to be a scene between Tony Stark and Natasha in the film, but it was nixed. Shortland and Feige decided they didn’t want any other Marvel heroes in the film, so Natasha could be the sole focus and carry the onus of her story. One character was changed from the comics. In the comics, Taskmaster is a mercenary named Tony Masters. He’s also a dude. In Black Widow, Taskmaster is turned into Antonia Dreykov to tie the character into the film's story. Interestingly, Olga Kurylenko’s turn as Taskmaster was completely missing from any promotional material for the movie. In the post-credits scene, Julia Louis-Dreyfus appears as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine. This was supposed to be the introduction of the character. However, COVID-19 changed those plans. Things got moved around, and Val first appeared in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier instead. The post-credits scene was added at the behest of Hawkeye showrunner Jonathan Igla. Disney was doing Premier Access during the pandemic, but the first time they announced revenue was for Black Widow. The company said Black Widow made $67 million in Disney+ first-weekend rentals. That is solid, especially considering that, according to reports, Black Widow was the most-pirated film of the pandemic. Johansson sued Disney over the simultaneous release, calling it a breach of contract that kept her from potential box-office bonuses. What followed was a couple of months teeming with bad-faith arguments and general unpleasantness because lawsuits bring out the worst in a lot of people, especially at such a high corporate level where billionaires and millionaires are fighting through high-salaried lawyers. After a few months, Disney and Johansson came to an undisclosed settlement. Keep up the good work.

    I was thoroughly entertained by this. Were some death-defying moments a bit much? Perhaps, but it’s fantasy. It’s fun! I wish we would’ve gotten it sooner but I’m glad it’s here. Nat deserved it. Yelena was a great new addition to the MCU.

    In the comics, Taskmaster is a very dangerous mercenary that has the power to mimic anyone’s fighting style just by watching them.
    I wish they would have released this movie when it was supposed to, because knowing that Nat dies later in the timeline, kind of takes away from any amount of danger that she gets into, but I still enjoyed the movie, though.
    Also, the Crimson Dynamo is basically the Russian version of Iron Man. 🕷️❌

    Another fine reaction, Kaiielle! Glad you enjoyed this one, too.
    A little background info: Yelena Bulova and the Red Guardian are both long-standing characters in the source material, although their relationships with each other and with Natasha are very different from what's depicted here. The greatest change is probably in the character of Taskmaster, as some commenters have already mentioned. In the comics, Taskmaster is a man with no connection (that I remember) to Black Widow or to Russia, and his ability to mimic others' fighting abilities was inborn rather than due to neural enhancement. A number of fans have balked at the changes, but I don't mind them.
    While there's definitely a good deal of grief processing going on here, I think there's less of that than in other MCU offerings from the same general period. I see misogyny (from Dreykov's character) and the bonds of family (from Natasha and those around her) as being more prominent themes in this story.
    Looking forward to "What If" -- it just might blow your mind! ⏳

    Firstly, Great job on the cosplay!
    My understanding is that this movie was planned for phase 2/3, but Disney execs were worried that "A female lead wouldn't sell"....then after Wonder Woman dropped, they realized it was possible. ❌
    Personally I was disappointed in Taskmaster. The character has so much more potential. Hopefully we'll see them used again, but better next time.
    Anyway, great reaction as always. Catch you for "What If...."

      If by "Disney execs" you mean one specific Marvel exec, then yes. Disney had plenty of female led films outside of Marvel prior to this. Ike Perlmutter had been on record many times as saying comics/toys/films shouldn't be aimed at a female audience since boys/men make up the "overwhelming majority" of the customer base. Depending on your definition of "overwhelming majority" and which statisticians numbers you put your faith in, this may or may not be true.

    'tis amusing that Yelena calls Alexei "Crimson Dynamo" at one point. The Crimson Dynamo was the soviet equivalent of Iron Man in the comics and one of the men who wore the armour was Anton Vanko - the old man we see dying in the opening of Iron Man 2, suggesting that possibly the MCU had its own version of the character who we've not yet seen in action. Possibly more interesting is Alexei repeatedly referencing his battles with Captain America in spite of his being either not born or in prison at the times that Steve wasn't frozen in a glacier. Evidence perhaps that the time-travelling Steve who'd stayed to live through the twentieth century with Peggy was still carrying out secret missions for SHIELD? I wonder how many people would have known about him? 🕷

    I like this movie fine as well. I think they should have toned down the explosion survival for all these "normal" humans. I know in comics Natasha has some special qualities, but in the MCU, all these people except Red Guardian are just humans. For all the gods and super serums and magic, we've come to expect survival of big hits and explosions, but Natashas car exploding multiple times and her just walking away are too much. They could have just made the movie more grounded, with action like a Jason Bourne or something.

      Unfortunately, those powers that be are laughing at The Marvels box office right now.
      I would have agreed at the time though. I think sexism is an oversimplification. Female led superhero movies up to that point, from Supergirl to Catwoman to Electra, had a poor track record at the box office. Plus there have been many female spy movies, from La Femme Nikita to Jennifer Lawrence's Red Sparrow. Red Sparrow was released during phase one. Is Red Sparrow really so different from Black Widow? Above all, Black Widow, cool as she is, is a human character. She didn't need a phase one movie imo to explain her origin anymore than Hawkeye did.

    • @FutureBoy85
      @FutureBoy85 9 месяцев назад

      @gridlo Naw, I never would've agreed with those types. Despite certain female led superhero movies at the time not being very good. I always knew they could be. Because there's plenty of non-superhero action/adventure/Sci-Fi movies that are successful. Such as Aliens, Atomic Blonde, Kill Bill, or the Terminator, or even Captain Marvel. The problem is that not many take them seriously or put in the same effort to write/direct them. Or maybe they do, but the budget they get is way less than a male led movie would get. There's way too many variables to make a film go wrong. I won't say too much about the Marvels to avoid spoilers, but I thought it was good and did not deserve all the hate it got. Sure, it was nowhere near great and the release order really screwed with the timeline, but it had way too much going against it. To me, The Marvels is way better than WW 84 or Morbius. Those two movies in my opinion, were on the level of Electra or Catwoman. But that's just me 🤷🏽‍♂️ Also, Black Widow is hella interesting and deserved a good movie, but a good part of her backstory was already touched on and revealed in other MCU movies. So some of her thunder was already stolen there.

    Definitely a middle of the road Marvel movie for me, but I did really enjoy. I think originally the movie was meant to throw us off going into Endgame, let us assume she will survive after, but delays etc.. didn't quite work out that way. I go back & forth about Taskmaster. It links all the way back to Black Widow talking to Loki in the first Avengers movie, I liked it/her, but I still preferred the comic version. I would have preferred Red Guardian a little more serious, but as you said the sisters, their mother, solid performances, a solid movie. I have seen a few times now & like it more each time. Trauma... I thought/think that Marvel was showing us a lot of duality. Wanda's flash backs, and astral self reading the Darkhold, two Visions, a recast Pietro. Another Captain America, now us Agent, plus Isaiah Bradley (also Cap in the comics) & then Sam, the guy Sam leaves the wings with (episode 5 I think) becomes the Falcon (in the comics). Now two Black Widows, the taskmaster that copies peoples abilities & the Red Guardian, another super soldier. Loki was all about variants, especially Loki's. Next What If, lots of alternate versions of our favourite heroes, and it continues. Great reaction, I loved What If (& their comics)

    loved your reaction !!! i agree that it could've been cool if the movie was actually released when it takes place, however i am extremely happy about the movie coming out after endgame. if it came out in 2016/17, florence pugh most likely wouldn't have been casted because at the time she was practically unknown. she had JUST had her big break in lady macbeth, but when they casted her in 2019, she had become a LOT more known in the mainstream hollywood area. i think flo is the best choice they could've made for yelena, because i truly don't see anyone else in the role. so personally, i would take flo's casting as yelena over the movie actually being released in between civil war & infinity war !!

    I really, really like your hair and makeup!.. I just had to say that.
    I love Florence Pugh as Yelena and Olga Kurlyenko as Taskmaster. I first saw Olga in Oblivion with Tom Cruise and it’s really cool she’s in the MCU now.

    I give this movie a pass when it comes to editing and continuity. They were shooting this when Covid hit, and the production got shut down during the lockdown. After the lockdown they resumed a limited production. As a result a lot of scenes just didn't get shot, so they edited together what they had, and reshot a few scenes to make sense of everything. But yeah, there are gaps in th4e movie. But all in all I was impressed by ScarJo's first outing as an executive producer.
    (I understand is that some of the missing scenes were to establish Natasha as a James Bond Fan, and her favorite Bond movie being Moonraker. So there were a lot more homages to Bond than the few we saw. And if you've seen Moonraker you know the Bond homage they did shoot, but I'm not going to spoil in case Moonraker ever shows up on your watch list)

    Personally, I love the fact that the villain turned out to not actually be a big obstacle to overcome. He was a coward who hid behind strong girls (that he viewed as disposable commodities). Men like that are no match for people with actual skill. Take away his army of widows and he's a weak nobody...who couldn't even hit Natasha hard enough.
    I don't look at many of the villains as major obstacles, actually...they're really only there as a backdrop to showcase the heroes and help them learn the lessons that they need to...the bigger the emotional journey that the hero is on, the weaker the villain needs to be. If you have a truly terrifying villain, then the audience focus can shift more to focus on him instead of the journey the hero is on. My $.02 anyway.❌

    But Alexei and Melina, on some level, truly loved those girls. You don't remember your youngest daughter's favorite song while separated for two decades...if you don't love her.
    Not even if you're a super-spy/soldier.

I know you're trying to follow an order, but I expect you're going to want to do Hawkeye so that you're finishing it right around xmas. Check with your order experts. So this movie was always meant to be a flashback movie but you are correct it was delayed. It was meant to come before WandaVision as the first Phase 4, but instead came kind of concurrently with Loki. So Valentina was supposed to appear here first and then in F/WS but the switching of the order doesn't mess up the continuity too much.
    I like this movie but agreed it's not my favorite. I love Yelena. In the comics she's a straight-up evil Widow but the film version of her character is way cooler and Florence Pugh is a revelation.
    Fun fact, Stranger Things had to change part of it's story arc when they realized Marvel also had David Harbour in a Russian prison. I don't know what they changed though, but apparently they thought the plots were too similar.

    Kevin Feige wanted BW before phase 4 but at the time of phase 1 och part of phase 2 he had a boss, Ike Perlmutter, who had a thought that female superheroes doesnt sell toys (action figures), so he denied Feige a BW movie up until Disney removed him (Feige complainted to Disney). By the time that happened (deep into phase2) it was way to late to fit a BW movie in before the end of phase 3.

    I love this movie! I just think that there should have been a Black Widow movie or two before this one to better set up Dreykov and Taskmaster. Also don’t think that Taskmaster should forgive Natasha. I mean, Natasha’s actions were the catalyst for Dreykov doing everything he did. I’m also not sure if I like the choice to make it so that Antonia was under the hypnosis. I think it would be stronger if she was a willing participant.

    A) It's tough for a comic book movie to compete with the scope others when the main character has no powers. That usually means the villian has no powers either.
    B) If they had put this movie between Infinity War and Endgame it would have spoiled lthe fact that Natasha died in Endgame. Also that Hawkeye was related to her death, also you would have had no idea who the lady was who met Yelena at the graveyard.
    C) Just as the Red Guardian was the Soviet verstion of Captain America in the comics, the Crimson Dynamo was the Soviet version of Iron Man.

    • @kaiielle
      @kaiielle  9 месяцев назад +1

      To your point about B, the movie doesn't spoil that. Just the credits scene because of when it was released. If it had come out in between Civil War and Infinity War, they would have made a different credits scene.

    I love all the scenes between Nat, Yelena, and their 'parents'. But they took some liberties with Taskmaster that kinda ruined the character. Wasn't much of a character at all. Natasha carried the guilt of killing Drakov's daughter for years, all for nothing. Loki even mentioned it to her in the first Avengers, when he was trying to get in her head.

    I enjoyed the movie. (And your reaction; thank you.) I think the problem that I had with it (it didn't hit well on the first watching) wasn't a problem with the movie, itself. By that point, I'd already been through the Infinity wringer. And, Infinity War and Endgame were devastating, emotionally. I hadn't only been watching these movies for a year. I've been watching since 2008. I love all of these characters. And, the way they ended, and the finality of their ending... that hit very, very hard. Of course, there is a Gamora out there. Why there couldn't be another Nat? Why not? But, at this point it's just rough. And, when I'm emotionally savaged like that, I have trouble enjoying other stuff in the same reality. (I don't know if you've ever seen Up. Usually Pixar rips your heart out at the end of the movie. In Up, they do it in the first 10 minutes, which made it impossible for me to enjoy the rest of the movie. Even now... I can't even be in the same room when it's playing. Curse you, Pixar! Augh!
    So, now I'm Infinity scarred. I think it makes it kind of tough to enjoy all the new stuff coming out. But, don't worry... I'll endeavor to soldier through it.
    At any rate... I loved Florence Pugh's character. I love their dynamic. Just makes me even more sad. (She's fine. No spoilers.)
    Thank you, as always, for the watch. I'll keep on keeping on with you.
    Take care, and I hope you have a wonderful holiday season!

    Biggest disappointment for me was Taskmaster. In the comics his skill is that he can mimic anything he sees and it's not computer chip generated. If he fights you once he can copy you and it was just ruthless! I know many people were looking forward to him (in the comics it's a guy) and they really blew it with that. They also were supposed to give her a movie long before this so by the time they did it, seemed a little out of place. Yelena was good and having that character continue on in the MCU will be good.

    This movie was a precursor to the actor's strike.
    Scarlett's contract said she got a percentage of the box office. Disney decided to release this on Disney+ on the same day it came out in theaters. So Scarlett sued claiming Disney+ reduced the box office. Disney settled. But stteaming revenue was a key issue in the most recent SAG negotiation with the studios.

    • @crankfastle8138
      @crankfastle8138 9 месяцев назад

      Her contract never stated that Disney couldn't stream at the same time and after the lockdown they needed revenue more than Scarlett needed her bonus. Also, it got railed by critics and wasn't going to do great box office anyways.

    • @havok6280

    After Endgame, where did Marvel Studios go?
    Future movies/series are a mixture. Some are downright solid, some hit the blah-but not horrible note, others are considered to be stinkers. A lot of focus has been placed on the latter two categories. It was hard to maintain the level of quality and grandeur of the movies from Black Panther on. With 20/20 hindsight, I think Feige would have reworked everything from Far From Home onward. I enjoy the productions, but agree, Marvel 'may have' overextended themselves and the blowback is now present.
