    Amazing video! If I may, I’d like to suggest a few more (as a hiring manager)
    1. If your resume is dense, it’s ok to bold critical information.
    2. Use the “So What?” test. After reading about your contribution, the reviewer shouldn’t think, “So what?”
    3. It’s ok to have different versions of resumes for different companies or roles.
    Apologies if unsolicited suggestions are not welcome.

      I have some questions:
      1. I’ve been rejected from about 50 interviews. (In the last one they found the excuse that I could have given more examples. There must have been 20 to 30 perfectly given interviews with no feedback at all. The feedback I got from a lot of them is that they went for another candidate).
      2. Before the pandemic it only took around 4 interviews to secure a new role
      3. I went to a top business school and have half a decade of experience working for blue chip companies
      4. *I’ve been given the advice by some corporate operatives that I could still somehow secure a role at a top company even if I’ve been unemployed for half a dozen years*
      *Is it discrimination? Is it bias because there is money involved? I would just like to know what is going on as I’m being forced to retire early abroad/take a career break in the summer*..

      It’s not his resume that got him into Google, (and not even his degree) but the University’s name (Carnegie Mellon) where he was graduated.
      My patience is running thin with folks who are privileged but can’t see they are privileged and give lessons to others less well off than them by showing “the resume that got me into X and Y” yet it’s their attendance to a prestigious organization that got them in there.

      @@lpmlearning2964 I acknowledge your statement. But I don't think we can complain about them being privileged cuz it takes hardwork to get accepted into those unis. Instead of being depressed about what we don't have, we should try what we can even if it will increase our chances by as little as 0.2. We will have to work harder for our shortcomings.

    • @lpmlearning2964
      @lpmlearning2964 Год назад +6

      @Thar Lin Shwe Thanks, but I don’t think we got any shortcomings. Not having the money to go to a prestigious Uni is not a shortcoming. Not being able to study in high school, or not having the same set of opportunities to exploit so you can show off and to go to those Universities; These are not shortcomings. I’m curious if everyone who is willing to flex their CVs are equally willing to include in those CVs how easy they had it before being admitted there. Let’s see if they would look equally bright as someone who actually did not have it as easy and still managed to get in.

      @@lpmlearning2964 If you see his 12 years of his life as software engineer video, you will see that his Carnegie Mellon name doesn't really help him that much in the first few years after he graduated. It mays help, but I think most of his achievements are based on his hardwork, not only the name of the university. Saying the prestige of university to dismiss the person's hardworks is quite offensive imo.

    I feel like it's pertinent to mention that the structure of your resume really depends on your expertise in the field you are applying for. If you're entry-level and currently working on a project, you might want to add a link in your resume to that specific project. This gives the resume reviewer immediate knowledge that you are actively applying yourself. You should still link your general repository address in the header, though.

    "People love modesty, but they don't hire it." God, I wish someone had told me that when I first started out! I used to undervalue myself so much on the job market, I would even lowball myself when it comes to salary, hoping that would make me a more attractive candidate.
    I've wasted years of working at jobs and companies with lower than expected salaries as a result, and looking at where I am now, I'm better than I gave myself credit for.

I realized what I needed to do and changed up the descriptions from "I do x, y, z" to "I have DONE x, y, z and it helped the company significantly with this total amount of sales, revenue etc. etc." and just by ACCURATELY stating what I've done and showing confidence I can proudly say that I have a wfh job now doing less and making more with a guaranteed 1+ year contract and Motorola reaching out to hire me. In Asia, alot of families force their children from an early age to be great at school so they can land at the best universities so they can land the best jobs. I'm not one of those people. I've been pressured to consider getting better grades to land a better university to put on my resume but seeing your advice gave me hope that experience, hardwork, and dedication (and what you've accomplished) speaks volumes to simply having better grades and hell even the highest GPA.

    I think "i wished i lived in Seattle(or New York)" is pretty common for most novice programmers. There are plenty of remote work jobs, but so few if any are entry level positions. I get the feeling no matter how good my resume is, if i cant get actual experience doing an internship at a start up or somewhere im never going to get anywhere. i live in the middle of nowhere in a 3rd world country, so basically zero chances of an internship(even finding a normal job is difficult). At this point i'd even be happy with a non paid remote internship, but those are mostly reserved for people studying a CS degree.

    One small thing I'd add is color contrast! So you can induce the recruiter to read what matter most first.
    Think about that 7 seconds average, if they don't find what they need very quickly, they'll just move on to the next file.

    Thats the format I used for my resume and I was never able to get a job as a data scientist because I don't have real work experience in the field, even when I applied for entry level positions I just get ignored. I have the skills and have done a handful of projects but it didn't seem to matter. With all your experience of course companies will pursue you.

    Speaking multiple languages its a skill and can put you in advantage, you can help translate website or app or any products thats a very good skill to add, but sometimes revealing your languages can revl your background if they they don't like it they may push your resume out, but thats also a great thing who wat to work in a racist place anyway

      This brothern' knows wat he saying. I put that I spoke C++ and then the interviewer became racist.

      @juliab3326 6 месяцев назад

      Depends on how unusual and useful your language skills are. In the US speaking more than one language may be super cool, anywhere else speaking two or three languages is the bare minimum. Speaking a language totally irrelevant to the company isn't going to help them either.
