Girl! You need to make videos like this for science teachers to share with young students!!!!! You do such an amazing job with these and I think you havr great potential to influence a younger generation as well in school!
As a student in Environmental Science and Sustainability, sometimes I feel eco anxiety. Not always, but when I do, it really hurts. I'm doing what I can! I just hope I can inspire others and even change policies
Leaving a comment for the algoritm since I can only give one like - you deserve so much more attention for these highly educational videos! thank you so much for educating me and your community!
Maybe a good video essay idea would be talking about the land to water connection with not just plastic waste, but pesticides and excess nutrients and how individuals can help combat things like loss of viable habitat for aquatic species and cleaner water for us.
This is my main reason why I stopped buying clothes made from plastic or I try to avoid plastic as much as possible. I wondered if it would get so small that it would get into our lungs like asbestos. I wish I wasn't right and its even worse that it can be in our blood! You confirmed my biggest fears. Despite I tell my family, friends, and people I know about it, they don't take it seriously, or say "I'll die anyway", etc. It's really disheartening. 😞
Over here (the Netherlands) paint remnants is something you bring to the "milieustraat" which is like the recycling facility for chemicals and electronics and stuff. The other option, if there's only a little bit left, is to have the container dry out in the open air and put it with the non-recyclable trash.
I love these long-style videos! I would love to see one on how to dispose of items that we already own in a sustainable way, like glitters, paints and other items containing plastic. And maybe also about the aftereffects of beauty products/medications that we consume/use and then these are flushed into water systems. Loved the video Shelbi!
A quick tip if you want to know if the tea bags you use has plastic in them is to burn a corner of one bag with a lighter (do it safely and outside ofc!). If there are plastic fibers in it it will kinda melt and shrivel up rather than quickly catch fire and burn like paper would. You can also try to just rip it, because a plastic fiber is a little harder to tear than paper, but burning it makes it much more obvious whether it’s 100% paper or not.
Clay paint is great 😊 I used it once in my room and it is just as easy to apply as “normal paint”, it smells nicer and you don’t have to open the windows in this room.
now I need a planetcare filter. I think I'm going to ask for it for christmas. This is such an ergent issue, I love how you said that planetcare recycles the microplastics, rather than just putting them in a new pile and not actually dealing with it 😟.
This doesn’t really have to do with the video, specifically but more just your channel in general. Idk if you’ll read this or not, but I wanted to let you know regardless! I have always cared about the environment and wanted to lower my impact on it. I’m the reason my parents started recycling when I was in high school (they still do 😊) but it didn’t go much beyond that. You are very passionate but also compassionate around the topic of people living eco friendly. I have ADHD and am unmedicated due to other health concerns and it makes things like consistency and making food for myself really difficult for me. Your channel has really helped me find a balance between being as eco friendly as I can, while still giving myself some grace. If buying the precut fruit is the only way I will eat it, that’s OK. I will give back to our planet other ways. I spent so long buying everything with as little packaging as possible, just for it to go bad in my fridge bc I forgot it was there or preparing it was too much for my brain. I have started composting! I did a bunch of research into which compost container would be easiest for me if I forget about it for awhile. ☺️ Your approach on not being impulsive to buy things and making informed decisions has helped me SO much. Thanks a bunch for all you do ☺️
Wow! This is a video which I wouldn´t hesitate to show to my students. I would be glad to see more this type of videos. But I´d also like to see referenced studies. Love your work! 😍
My parents are getting ready to paint their kitchen. Does anyone have any suggestions on dealing with the rollers? My parents will keep paint forever but they do rinse out brushes and rollers. I don’t think it would be good to buy a brush and roller and just throw it away. We are open to anything!
One thing that helps is that if they are not done with a certain color put the roller head into a grocery bag and wrap it snugly, then put it in the refrigerator until the next day. It keeps the paint from drying out and you don't need to wash all that paint down the drain when you will just be using it again the next day.
I am all for wearing natural fibres and using natural skincare ingredients. I actually have multiple skin sensitivities, and the worst is to petrochemical based synthetics fibres (polyester, nylon, etc.) and synthetic skincare ingredients (petrolatum, poly-whatever, etc.), all of which make me break out into welts, rashes, spots or blisters. And did you know that when a garment's label says that it's made with 100% natural fibre that only applies to the fabric? It doesn't apply to any buttons, zippers, trim, the thread that was used to sew the seams, or any logo or image that might be printed on it, all of which can still be some kind of synthetic. To avoid all that I now make all of my own clothes with natural fibres, even my underwear. I also make my own body butter, lip balm and serums with natural ingredients. When I tell other people about my sensitivities, I'll often get a response like "Wow, how unfortunate for you. I'm glad I don't have your sensitivities." But I think I'm more like a canary in a coal mine. These things are inherently unhealthy for all of us. The detrimental effects just show up sooner in people like me.
in regards to dumping paint: in the states it'll prolly depend on your municipality and the type of paint. most likely, rather than dumping it down the drain, it should be exposed to air to harden it or mixed with kitty litter and thrown in with your garbage. some places take latex paint and mix it together to use for other projects! my area does a hazardous waste drop off event in the fall and spring and we just started taking latex paints for that purpose!
@@HosCreates ofc you should advocate for paint recycling! but when you don't have that option already, there are better ways you can dispose of it. in my area, we are told to harden latex paint and throw it in with our normal garbage or, now, bring it to the event so it can be used rather than wasted. better than dumping it down the drain in liquid form. not saying it's ideal either way but yk
i use planet care filters!!! i wear natural fibers as much as possible, but i'm an athlete so you can pull my quick-dry spandex from my cold dead hands. my only dislike of the filters is that i can only get about 5 loads before each one gets so clogged up the wash doesn't drain and i blame Molly 🙀🐈
Laura hi and thank you for being part of the solution already! Yes, unfortunately the pets' hair are a cause for the filters to get full a bit sooner... but we are constantly working on improving our solution and we are trying to find a better way!
Thank you so much for this. Microplastics have been something I’ve been interested in for a couple years now and I’m so glad more people are talking about and learning about them. Well-put together video, I’m definitely sending this to my friends and family
When we have started our mission in 2017 we were almost alone and we are hopeful that now, with more people aware of the problem, more will want to become part of the solution. Ever since the situation has only got worse, microfibres have now been found in placentas, blood, lungs, breast milk,...:( So, really - every step counts!
I work for one of the most remote national parks in the US, and I just got an email this morning from a researcher who had found microplastics in our soil. Yikes.
I love this, I will need to watch again to absorb it all. I am pretty new to sustainable living, but want to do my best and you really help me. I love watching your blog channel as well to see your real life living sustainability as well.
I really love these videos. I share them with my teenager. Could you do one on the plastics and chemicals found in nail polish for me to share with her😊
Shelby the video quality here is amazing and so informative 💚. I’ll be sharing it with family who are stuck on single use plastic water bottles for sure. Thank you for continuing to educate us and provide solutions as well as letting us know about companies that are trying to do good! Going to ask my husband about installing a filter for our wash machine. We have a lot of athletic wear which I’m sure sheds even more plastic :(.
I have been feeling like we are in a waste management rut! Like we've been doing all the same things for so long, and we know it's effectiveness is weak! I tried to talk to the new waste management in my area and they were so "whatever" about it! I want waste management to get excited about their job!!!
Another tip to reduce some of the microplastics you create would be to drive less. If you have to, use a smaller, lighter vehicle. The larger and heavier the vehicle, the greater the pressure on the tires and the faster they wear down--producing more microplastic particles. If you have the option of a train vs a bus, choose the train; they have no tires, just metal wheels on metal tracks. Another thing I only realized recently is that most pencil erasers are made with synthetic rubber (aka plastics), so all those shavings are freshly-made microplastics that get everywhere. I've been meaning to try a natural rubber eraser for this reason (they're difficult to track down, but I've found one sold by Wisdom Supply Co). Also avoid glitter. It is just nasty pre-made microplastics.
Try using a putty eraser. They don't generate dust and they last for ages. Pluss you can squash them into shapes to make rubbing out tiny mistakes easier.
This is incredible, I loved this vid! Amazing info, beautiful editing, all around informative and attention-grabbing. I’ve loved watching your channel grow and evolve; this work is so important I’m so grateful for your content!
This was so well done and informative! I like that you discussed some solutions. I always think it’s important to offer ideas for what we can do to help instead of just focusing on the problem itself.
I just watched this video, and paused it midway to buy the filter, and your code still works - so awesome! Thank you for this helpful info so I can do something more to reduce Microplastics! And for helping us save while trying to save the environment!
that is SO EXCITING to hear that these microplastic filters will be incorporated directly into washing machines! this is exactly the kind of change we want to see: the manufacturers directly reducing the risks and impact before the product is even created!
We are working hard to make the filters mandatory in every washing machine. But this fight is a marathon (we have been trying for it since 2017!) and the pollution is a sprint. That is why the external retro-fit filters are so important now.
I love how you explained the company model for PlanetCare. Do you know any similar companies that may also do a shower water filter? I love that you can send back the filters and they repurpose them. I’m also looking at smart composters and am wondering if Lomi and any other brands do that with their filters.
Thank you for this informative video. Every time that I watch a video on how to be more sustainable/green, it’s nothing that I don’t already do. I learned a couple of things from you today and will make those changes promptly.
Might be cool to see a deep dive on the water crisis going on around the world. It seems that fresh water is becoming scarce and less accessible worldwide as well as here in the U.S
I who consider myself an artist, have decided to stop using acrylic paint for this reason. I have switched to gouache paint, which seems to be better. Still, I don't know if it's *safe* to wash down the drain. Does anyone have any tips?
Some of the minerals in watercolor can be dangerous for marine life.I clean brushes by scraping exess onto palettes to reuse and wash them in a waterjar with lid. Wait some time (days even) most particles will sink to the bottom of the jar, so i can wash the water down the drain and clean the jar with small scraps of paper that need to go in the nonrecylingbin afterwards.
Thanks for making this video. I’ll admit the beginning had me doomsdaying and almost on the floor in the corner in the fetal position. Glad we can help make systemic change.
I’m definitely going to be sharing this video with friends and family! I agree that a video style like this could be great for school science classes to reach out and inspire the youngins! I remember most science videos in school being done by old dudes lol.
in south australia you can drop your unused or unwanted paints at a paintback site where they claim to correctly dispose of it, otherwise i’m pretty sure paint is something to be taken to a hazardous waste disposal place 😊
I'd love to learn more about how to safely dispose of paint! I have some paint cans either with dried paint in them (and empties) and I've been keeping them because I don't know what to do with them. I've also been washing and re-using my rollers - is it better to get new ones? I assumed reusing would be better but if I need to wash them and therefore put paint down the drain, maybe it isn't better to do that. I've also been debating between a few different microfiber filters to get for the last few months - I guess this settles that =]
Do you find that you are able to get more than 20 washes out of one filter? I feel like the "dirty" one you showed was nowhere near as full as the one shown on Planet Care's website which seems to have a thick fabric layer. (not a criticism, just curious).
I hear you about the whole wearing natural fibers thing but as someone with more of an athletic build, clothes without stretch is incredibly uncomfortable for me or won't fit.
Great video!! Informative and enjoyable. I’d love to know more about lithium car batteries and that impact. Is it really a smart move to get an electric vehicle? Truly curious and don’t trust many out there but I know you’ll deliver the facts.
I think it depends (on your usage of your/ a car and the type of car you drive). It is certainly better to use public transport (bus or train or car sharing if possible), but if you are depending on a single-owned car maybe do a life-cycle analysis. If your old car is still functioning well and you aren't driving too often especially not in cities it's likely more environmentally friendly to just keep it and drive it till it's "dead". Or get it rebuild so it releases less (/no) emissions. Since new cars require ressources and trashing your old one (even selling it) sometimes just creates more waste or a worse outcome for the environment on the planet overall. A lot of old cars are shipped overseas/ to other/ poorer countries because it's harder to sell them to customers incountry. The diesel filter is also often removed because that's the most precious/ profitable part and sold seperately. So people in other countries are driving more emissions-releasing cars which is a travesty (they have less regulations, worse governments (don't care about their people's well being much) often). If your old car is close to being "dead" anyway (or you don't own one yet, but definitely need it) than it's probably better to get an electrical one. Since in the long run (after 6-10 years of usage I think it was) they outcompete the conventional ones. Maybe not a brand new one even. If it's possible for your lifestyle and budget... But afterall an experts opinion might be better/ more accurate than mine and I'm sorry if I bothered you and you wanted an answer exclusively from shelby.
Great video! I’d love to know your take on polyvinyl alcohol. I realized that Dropps pods and other similar products are made with that film that dissolves into water. Is that really eco friendly?
I've never dumped paint in the sink but when I get paint on my hands I clean them in the sink, not sure what the alternative is to washing your hands to get it off. Same with cleaning paint brushes. Would love to know if there is a better option
as a french I did not know. Is that already voted ? I am looking for some filter to put on my washing mashing now, it is not a very useful accessory to be found here, especially in small city shops
Great and scary video 🎥 S! Are these studies based in the USA or worldwide? I'm in the UK and watch Immy's videos 🎥 too and like your video states...more questions than answers...how bad is the UK affected and also what percentage is in South Wales 🏴 where I am located. I mainly relate this question to humans and the plastic found inside us... I have been aware of what you stayed for a little while but it was confronting to hear it again! I find all this information quite scary 😮😦😧😨 but also upsetting 😥😥😥😓😓😓 and informative - a mixture of emotions 🧐🧐🧐 . I get PlanetCare emails. I was keen to try them out but my husband wasn't keen so I looked into a guppy bag and Cora Ball. I chose the Cora Ball. I think what PlanetCare is doing is great. I think future washing machines having a built in microfiber filter is a great idea and will make it easier in the long run. . What happened to your other microfiber filter you had? It was a black one and much larger then the PlanetCare one. . I wash my clothes on a case by case basis, airing them out works well when the weather is suitable, otherwise hanging them on the washing basket or bedroom mirror. . Tea brands in the UK are offering more sustainable options for tea bags. Loose leaf tea is the best option but not always a suitable product to choose depending on where you are. I personally use teabags when at work and a mixture of loose leaf tea and teabags at home. I also bring my used teabags home from work and place them in my councils weekly foodwaste collection service. . I also use period knickers and do wander how many microfibers get out when I wash them...the Coraball only does so much...
Whatever ways we can get plastic out of our everyday life we should take. I work in the medical field and we use single use plastic every minute of the day, every day and it won't change anytime soon.
I think maybe I should get a microplastic filter, but Im not sure if its suitable for my area so you can send in used filters to have it cleaned, or suitable for my washing machine
I'm lost. Need your echo friendly help. I need to replace the siding on my 150 year old house. What would be the most echo friendly And have the highest R value?

I love how you explained the company model for PlanetCare. Do you know any similar companies that may also do a shower water filter? I love that you can send back the filters and they repurpose them.
I’m also looking at smart composters and am wondering if Lomi and any other brands do that with their filters.
Shelbi! Would it be beneficial to purchase one of these filters to your dishwasher or do not that many microplastics come off of dishes?
Thank you for this informative video. Every time that I watch a video on how to be more sustainable/green, it’s nothing that I don’t already do. I learned a couple of things from you today and will make those changes promptly.
Wow! Different video style from Shelb! Good job
i just watched this on stream and am so grateful for all of your work in educating the people! thank you 💖
Might be cool to see a deep dive on the water crisis going on around the world. It seems that fresh water is becoming scarce and less accessible worldwide as well as here in the U.S
i love this format!!!
Love this style of video ,
Well spoken and slowly talked about so easy to follow
Thanks 👍 😊
Love the long-form; lots of great information! Thank you.
@@jessicab.3713 ok, thanks!
Thanks for making this video. I’ll admit the beginning had me doomsdaying and almost on the floor in the corner in the fetal position. Glad we can help make systemic change.
Awesome work as always, Shelbizleee! I'm gonna show this video to my family and hopefully get them on board :)
What a great video! I can see how much time and dedication you have to this channel. Love it!
I’m definitely going to be sharing this video with friends and family! I agree that a video style like this could be great for school science classes to reach out and inspire the youngins! I remember most science videos in school being done by old dudes lol.
I love the video essay format! This and your eutrophication video are so impactful.
Thank you for everything you do!
Teabags are convenient, but loose leaf tea and reusable infusers are better! :)
Fully approve essay vidz! Gonna put it on repeat for the algorithm :)
I love your video editing! You found some really fun footage and combined it really well with the text, it was like eye candy!
in south australia you can drop your unused or unwanted paints at a paintback site where they claim to correctly dispose of it, otherwise i’m pretty sure paint is something to be taken to a hazardous waste disposal place 😊
Didn't expect that this video would give me as much anxiety as it did. 😅
Really wonderful video, this information really needs to reach everyone
Thank you for always providing information as well as advice for what we can do 🎉
I just want to say that you’re my favorite RUclipsr ♻️🤗
This was such a great video Shelby, thank you so much
I hear you about the whole wearing natural fibers thing but as someone with more of an athletic build, clothes without stretch is incredibly uncomfortable for me or won't fit.
Hi, Hanh... synthetic materials are something that will never be completely gone and that is why it is so important to know the solution...:)
I appreciate hearing your research and insight. I love this kind of video!
Thanks for creating awareness.
But afterall an experts opinion might be better/ more accurate than mine and I'm sorry if I bothered you and you wanted an answer exclusively from shelby.
this was such a good and informative video
Great video! I’d love to know your take on polyvinyl alcohol. I realized that Dropps pods and other similar products are made with that film that dissolves into water. Is that really eco friendly?
Incredibly informative video. Thank you for your hard work!
Great informative video, thank you x
Beautifully executed
Great video! Super informative ❤
Great job on this one :) I'd love to see a video about the extinction crisis. I feel like it's not talked about enough in the sustainability world
is linseed oil paint a good alternative?
I've never dumped paint in the sink but when I get paint on my hands I clean them in the sink, not sure what the alternative is to washing your hands to get it off. Same with cleaning paint brushes. Would love to know if there is a better option
as a french I did not know. Is that already voted ? I am looking for some filter to put on my washing mashing now, it is not a very useful accessory to be found here, especially in small city shops
Great video!
I really like this video format
Great and scary video 🎥 S!
Are these studies based in the USA or worldwide?
I'm in the UK and watch Immy's videos 🎥 too and like your video states...more questions than answers...how bad is the UK affected and also what percentage is in South Wales 🏴 where I am located. I mainly relate this question to humans and the plastic found inside us...
I have been aware of what you stayed for a little while but it was confronting to hear it again! I find all this information quite scary 😮😦😧😨 but also upsetting 😥😥😥😓😓😓 and informative - a mixture of emotions 🧐🧐🧐
.
That you for the solutions portion of this!
Love the educational videos like this, I appreciate the effort you put in to research these topics 💚
Whatever ways we can get plastic out of our everyday life we should take. I work in the medical field and we use single use plastic every minute of the day, every day and it won't change anytime soon.
Thank you for sharing such an informative video!
Years ago (5 years maybe?) I bought glitter, and I haven’t used it since then… what can I do with it?
Really great video! Thanks for all the great information and work that you do!
I really appreciate your hard work to create such informative videos, I really like this style of video, I even got my husband to watch it and he found it interesting too.
Love this form of video! Very informative and inspiring
