Hi, I am a bit late here but he does not mention how to adjust the voltage reference for the A4988 and that is one of the most imortant steps in order you do nhot feed too much current into your motors ...
Yeah. I had to find someone else who explains this. And it was in an Asian country, and dude didn't speak english. So that video with the math, and another to show how to do it, without the CNC shield. You will need the following: Ardunino (duuh), breadboard, multimeter, alligator clips, test leads, experimental leads. Calculator if you are bad with math (like me). You feed the driver 5V (and GND), from the Arduino, short the Reset and Sleep pin. Now you need some extra leads - connect one to the other ground coming from the Arduino, and the other directly to the mutlimeters red wire (Hot/Positive lead). -That's the one that gets connected to a screwdriver. Power it all up, measure DC voltage. The math - do it depending on what stepper motor you have. Will get one from work, Moons stepping motor, 24V, 200 steps (or was it 400?!). These are a bit old, we do have real drivers at work - but they cost a lot, and they have a powersource designed for them. Also, talking about electronics, does anyone here know PLC? Getting one of them older Siemens "Easy" PLC boxes, 48 volt in, can change whatever output you want.. And hey, get one of the IoT shields, control the CNC shield from distance!
No, I think, because the motor have low rotation (Compared to a spindle or a Dremel) and the steppers don't have much force so you need soooo low velocities or a thin and more brittle material to cut
Hello good Morning. congratulations for the project how can i assemble one step by step. how to start the engine on arduino uno generico I bought the engines these ai in the video but I can't get them to respond right away they keep turning with crackling crackles if you can help me I would be grateful.
Hi i have problem here. What the power adapter used for?does it use to supply the stepper motor? if i use power adapter 12v 2A and at the same time i use stepper motor 1.7A(max current),does it will cause damage to my motor due to excess current?and will it affect the motor driver a4988?
No, that current rating is how much it can output, but the real current will be determined by how much does you circuit demands, and that you should calibrate with the potentiometer in the small driver on the shield
Don't follow these videos when they plug in those drivers. The orientation will blow out your board and your Arduino and your driver/s. I give thumbs down to those who do not explain the orientation of the driver installation.
Could be a very helpful video (except for the music) if you could PLEASE SLOW DOWN so we can learn from you. I can't follow along because you move too fast.
The color of the wires can vary from one manufacturer to another or even from one batch to another with the same manufacturer. You need to use an ohm meter to find which wires connect together.
The motors are rated for 5 volts but you are using a 12v supply on the breakout board, how is this possible without frying the motor? Can I use a 7.25v rated motor?
Mines get very hot. I hope not fried seems working still. But the tutorial is perfect for me who has no idea at coding but just printing 3D.I even add my old PS3 controller with Antimicro software ! If you know the solution for keeping motors safe , I would be happy to modify mine! I have the same setup.
Yes, but use the DRV8825 instead - more reliable. Looking for something more advanced? Find the TMC2100 driver then, it can go at 1/256 microsteps, on the output of 1/16. Making it extremely quit driver. It uses interpolation. It's "brother" the 2130, is even more advanced - SPI connection on top! I think you can build a reliable 3D printer, CNC milling/lathe machine or even a laser cutter. Back to topic, don't forget to get the TL-Smoother, so it moves more smoother (thus you actually want a better stepper motor driver!). But.. Printhat is what you are looking for. Still, yes - we should be able to make a simple 3D printer with this.
Hi, Thanks for your fruitful tutorial. Actually, my both stepper motors rotate in the only clockwise direction. While I have anti direction too but motor rotates only in 1 direction.
Notice, if running a 24v stepper motor, ensure to have a cooling fan attached nearby. You will need it. Also, if you get with the pre-attached heatsinks, remove them, remove excess "pads", and use thermal glue! I'll see if I have time to upload something to Sketchup, where you can copy a build of a working "base" station for the arduino+CNC shield.
What is the Vref for the A4988 drivers and this motors? I'm was trying to run this motors with the same setup (Arduino Uno, CNC shield) and have no success.
The 5 wire in the video is a unipolar stepper and the CNC shield with the A4988 driver needs a bipolar motor. Your 4 wire is a bipolar and is ready to connect.

Also I noticed When I change the Z driver for the driver that was installed in Y, it sounds. Is there a way that this driver can damaged?
Thank goodness... i just started gathering the parts for a cnc and this video was helpful. But i got 6 wired stepper motors....can u help me out with this.
There a 2 center tap wires and the rest 4 are the wires of the ends of both the coils. By checking the resistance between all combinations of wires, the highest resistance(
Looks good but it's very limited. Not everyone will want a mini CNC or plotter. What about trying to get a servo z axis with a Uno and Grbl shield. That would enable us to move up to a larger setup.
Hello, i got arduino uno, cnc shield and one drive. Your power supply for the stepper is 12v with 0.5 amp. I got one 12v and 2.5 amps... will i burn the board if i plug in this charger ?? TYVM
very good video but I have a query, what are the values in: step / mm axis (X, Y; Z), (step pulse, usec), (default feed, mm / min), (step idle delay, msec), (acceleration, mm / sec ^ 2). for me personally I did not work with that engines I have 10 of that and I have thrown them for the same I do not work step by step but I adjust them, only I work the nema 17, and the other do not work the link GRBL Controller , X-loader to review, greetings
In case somebody will also be interested in it, I can share my own experience. I've got my 28BYJ-48 12V motor working stable and predictable (as much as it is possible) with the following settings: 1/4 microstepping, travel resolution 1024 step/mm, maximum rate 300 mm/min (this is the key point!)
This motors are not usable for cnc machine because of huge backlash. Also, a4988 drivers current limiting is not working because sense resistors are too small(should be 1-2Ohms so it can be adjusted to provide 160mA current needed for choosen motors) and more this drivers can melt themselves because of that if you will power it with higher voltage
Which kind of PSU did you use? I tried with mi CPU PSU 12 volts, with an external 12 Volts 1 amp PSu, even adjusting the right value of the VRef for a Nema17, and Nothing Happens, well it happens, when I press the Y buttons, only Y motor sound but without moving. When I press the X buttons, the X motor sounds, but without moving, and the X and Y seems to change values on the GCode Sender. and when I press the Z buttons, nothing happens.
The A4988 driver has a trim potentiometer on the end that sets the amount of current for the motor. You probably need to adjust this to a higher current to make the motors move.
Hey i want to make a cnc number printing plotter machine, problem is that, when i want to print a number using stepper motors then i upload my Gerber file when it works, but when i want to change my printing number then again go to pc, and chnage the Gerber file then upload, my work is not so great, i just want to print some numbers using stepper motors. so Arundio IDE have any library to without using Gerber i change my number from keypad and display. Good video i want to build this but you hover over the screen that fast move around i dont know what you are pressing. Could you do one just on the download and adding and saving image please then how to send it to arduino please. Many thanks Kevin
I said this to no other but you. You are just awesome man. You are the best. You videos, the way you taught others how to build things ..man that makes it a lot easier although I am new to this thing. You got talent on how to make other understand easily unlike others who also taught. Even a beginning can understand your tutorial videos. I greatly appreciate it man. I say again, you are THE best! Clearing my doubt real quick while I am here with the Pro. Can I use the same parts and arrangements for a bigger and stronger motors that can cut steel? CNC machine for steel? Can I?
hello sir everything is perfect work but y axis is not work and a4988 driver is demag and a4988 driver 5 time change. pizzzzzz problem solving why this problem plizzzz help me
Do you use heatsink on your drivers, if not, this may be the cause. If yes, then try limiting the current (you might be using power supply that can deliver current more than 500mA)

Hola con una alimentación externa de 5v los motores no se mueven.?
Yes, the motors are rated to 5v but the drivers doesn't work with this voltage
can you please do the wiring of limit switches and also what to change in code /setting to make them work
appriciated
hi. What happen with volts of motors? You have 12v but motors consumes 5v
They got hot and strong
The 5V motor has been retrofitted to be equivalent to 10V.
Therefore, using 12V power supply will not overheat??
