Why The iPhone Has A Virtual Home Button

- In 2017, Apple removed the home button from their flagship iPhone X, but you may’ve noticed a virtual home button that still exist today. I’ll explain why Apple created it and why it’s been widely used.

You can also program the AssistiveTouch to be of actions while holding or double tapping it. For example, you could mimic a real home button by setting single tap to home, a double tap to app switcher, and pressing and holding to activate Siri.
mine's programmed that way, 😁
my iphone 6s' ringer/silent switch is damaged so i 3d press the assistive touch button to activate and deactivate silent mode! super helpful!
Where do you do that?
@@grahamevans8567 open settings, accessibility, touch, assistive touch, finally custom actions.
@@KPopTato Thanks man 👍🏻
I always thought that this feature was intended to be there if a physical button on the iPhone fails(like the Home-Button with the iPhone 7 loop-diseases) so that you can avoid an expensive repair
On my old phone home button broke and I used this instead and I never had to repair it
@@TheSoundYouDontNeed Same. I had that issue with an iPhone 7 and Assistive Touch was a very useful feature and I’m glad that iOS has that embedded in the actual system
Nah, Apple would never let you save money on repairs.
Yeah, that actually happened to my iPhone 5s a few months ago! Assistive Touch saved my ass!
@Kepler 186-F Do I know you?
The only kinda sad thing about the home button being removed is that we don’t have Touch ID any more on the new iPhones (except SE) 😕
Face ID??? A better more reliable version?
@@danielwalker2162 identical twins
@@danielwalker2162 sure but it’s easier to use touch id
@@danielwalker2162 face id is great too bad we have to wear masks all the time

I love the “relatively” new back tap feature. I’ve programmed one to open my camera and the other to activate my robot vacuum. Actually super useful
I find it goes off accidentally too often to actually use it, unfortunately
@@guymangan yessss!
@@guymanganhad it set for flashlight and my flash was on like non stop it seemed like
@@guymangan I felt like it went off when I didn’t want it to, and couldn’t get it to work when I did. But that was with my XR. Works pretty much all the time with my 13 Pro
Had it set to take as Im double tap and go to home on single tap. Half time it never worked. It either randomly activated or never works.
Though being familiar with it, I haven’t really utilized it to the full potential. It is a useful tool but would like to learn more to set it up. Thanks, Greg. Best voice on RUclips.
Every iPhone user I've met uses this thing if they have a iPhone 6 it's always broken
Oh
Really?
Mine stopped working after 5 years after extensive use
I have an iPhone 6s and the home button doesn't work anymore (even Touch ID as well) so I have to use Assistive Touch.
Apple moment
Another useful accessibility feature is the back tap, you can set it for 2 taps and 3 taps to open an app, turn on the camera, or use the flashlight.
Yes, not many people know about this.
But it doesn’t work that good if you have a case
@@DARK_AMBIGUOUS it’s still not great without a case imo, often resulting in accidental activation. I guess that’s why it wasn’t heavily promoted by Apple as well.
Thought it was handy until I had my flashlight set. I would ride my motorcycle and put my phone on my x-grip stand, bumpy roads aren't the best. Haha
The physical "button ribbon" breaking back then, around the time of the iPhone 3GS/4/4S, was something I and plenty of others experienced, which was why I had to use assistive touch all the time. After some use, the home button would become more and more unresponsive till it broke completely, and replacing the faulty part wouldn't last
As always another great video. I always use the virtual home button on my SE 2020. I’m an old man with disabilities and having this feature is a big help. Good day to all.
@WhatsApp ➕1⑥②⑥⑤⓪⑥②⑤⑧⑤ imagine scamming an old man, that's scummy as f
as an asian, and my father owning an iphone se ii for its comfortable size; i can confirm that my dad uses this accessibility feature more than than any app(maybe mail) on his phone despite he having no problems with dexterity.
When I had my iPhone 8+ I used assistive touch simply to take a screenshot. That was because I didn’t know how to. I eventually learned how and assistive touch became a thing of the past. I don’t even use it on my 11!
AssistiveTouch is also great for older people who don’t really understand the gestures on the iPhone X and up. They can use it like a home button they would be used to on their older iPhones.
Thank you for covering the Assisstive Touch Greg, I'm new to most of their features so its so informative atleast for me
Assistive touch helped me a lot because back when I had 5s, I use the home button every second until months later it didn't work anymore. One of the most efficient features Apple made.
Used to use this thing on my iPhone 5 with broken home, lock and ring buttons 🙃
iPhone moment
These videos are brilliant, please keep it up!
Lifesaver👍🏻
When I got the xs max I used that feature for 2 days but it kept getting in the way because it would be in front of an app that I need to open after 2 days I haven’t used it since
I love the gentle music that's actually in the BACKGROUND instead of the loudest sound in a video that drowns out everything we're supposed to hear.
PS: I also love the explaining part of Apple Explained. 😊
this is cool, had no idea iphone had this
I think they should accommodate this virtual home button in the middle of other docked app/function shortcuts so that it feels more natural to iphone SE and 8plus homebutton fans. Unless its in the bottom, it’d trouble my muscle memory. Apple can very easily do this. Haptic feedback works wonderfully well. What do you think about this idea.
I love assistive touch 😊
I've been using that virtual button since my iPhone 5 days, in order to save wear and tear on the physical home button. Still use it to this day in my 1st gen SE and my 8th gen iPad for the same reason

Hello Apple Explained. Can you do a video about those weird dynamic wallpapers on IOS? They’re just circles floating about and Apple never added more. Never understood what their purpose is 😊
Kind regards
Just circles? Lol
I remember the dynamic wallpapers from my iPhone 5s - one was a starry sky, and depending on the angle you held the phone at, the stars/sky would shift. Pretty cute, but a drain on battery life.
@@melsyoutube I'm pretty sure he means the dynamic wallpapers we have today
Copy android live wallpaper
On a side note, the iPhone 7, 8 and second gen SE do have an actual virtual button. As the button in those devices aren't actual buttons but rather pressure sensors paired with the haptic engine, if the iPhone ever detects the button doesn't work (like when you replace it with snother button), it will actually give you a virtual button that does nothing more than work as the home button, without any of the Assistice Touch extra features. A mere virtual button
Ever since my iPhone 7 home button glass cracked it assistive touch has been a vey helpful thing indeed. The phone detected the button was broken so turned it on automatically. Very clever
I bought my iPhone 6 in 2014 and after 5 years my home button stopped working , so assistive touch feature was really useful for me
On some Samsung phones like the Note 9, they have a force touch home button where you would expect it. This works extremely well and you can even customise the sensitivity of it.
I customized mine heavily. One tap assistive touch opens my camera. Double tap to open the assistive touch. Holding it takes a screenshot. I reduced the time it takes to hold it for screenshots. Best way to take screenshots IMO. I really like the customization. I have triple tap on the back for making assistive touch come and go.
Thanks Greg. I've been using iphones for about 6 years and this is the first time hearing or seen such thing. Will check it out
You must be joking
@@mvx627 I shit you not. I have never seen this thing on anyones Iphone. I guess it existed before I started using, otherwise I would have noticed with the updates. Like for instance the double/triple tapping on the back - I do know about that feature tho.
Aww, finally a Apple Explained that I knew before Greg even explained it. But nonetheless I still hit like 👍🏼 and watched the video anyway just to hear the calming music and the way he explains things. 😌

I never knew about this feature, thanks Greg
Nice! Thanks for pointing out this handy feature.
Back in days I used it a lot in my iPhone 7 for the same reason which is explained in video, I used assistive touch to lock the screen, to capture screen shot, even to perform multitasking by pressing home twice and also to go to Home Screen but however recently I switched to iphone13 so now I am not using it
Tbh, i rarely used assistive touch. I use it only when i want to restart my phone
I never knew that existed! I really enjoy your channel- keep up the good work!
I recently purchased my first iPhone (an 8 Plus) with the home button but I also use this virtual home button. For me it’s convenient, like the Android one.
That was the first thing I turned on when I got my XS Max. Nice having 3D Touch still, I have it switch between ringer and silent for a hard press so I don't have to play with the switch.
I’ve been using it ever since switching to iOS from Android a year ago. It makes it more customizable!
Great video, as always!
It’s pretty useful, my old xr started bugging out and freezing and I was able to restart using this, and I also use it to take screenshots with out using the power and volume button
I didn’t know that there’s a function like that. Thanks 😊
i like the background music
I thank god for this video. I wasn’t able to find a real home button on my iPhone 12 mini’s front so for me it was unusable for a couple of months. Thanks to you bro I can use it fine from now. 😂
*Good thing they have it since if you broke your physical home button you can have a backup*
Its Great if certain buttons don’t work such as the mute or standy/turn off Button for example
I like this feature which is not talked about much with assistive touch for restarting the phone. without having to press the buttons comes in handy especially if you phone is acting up, etc.
True but a newer like the feature but the features is my favorite
I been watching yall videos all day
Been using this feature ever since
Your videos are always the best
Quality content 👉❤👈🌟
I set up single, double, triple tap actions to quickly dim the screen (using accessibility zoom of all things), etc.
Though newer phones and OS tend to have included easy ways to do certain things.
I thought I was the only person to use this 😆 I've never seen anyone use this other than people I've shown
POV: you already knew this and have made your own custom gestures to unlock your iPhone etc
I used to use this as a home button when the manual one broke on my old phone. What a life saver :’)
I never heard of this feature before and I always had iPhone. I don’t think I’ll use it even if I know of it now.
I keep mine to Max of 4 buttons. Has become much more useful since. Fewer choices, more streamlined.
Thankfully neither of my home buttons have ever worn out!!! But I do love the assistive touch feature, I just wish they'd edit it out and make it invisible in screenshots and screen recordings!
okay wait, I do not understand this about my iPhone
So why does my iPhone 8 (I got it in 2019) keep doing this weird thing where it freezes, starts doing the loading thing, and then when i unlock it, it repeats? ;et me tell you Its done this before where it started to "Boot-loop" afterwards to where i had to erase everything and start fresh. Should i get a new iPhone when i can? Because there is no chance i am switching brands, but i also want to save money (So no iPhone 13's for me)
Could you possibly explain why on the 12 I can’t switch on my front camera to my back camera while I’m recording please and thank you
This method is perfectly working with my device. Great job. Keep it up.
This is amazing! I never knew this existed. This is going to be so useful
I still use it up to this day to Mute or Unmute my iPhone. It’s because the ring/silent switch tends to go back after a lot of use. Assistive touch makes it easier and you don’t even have to use the button anymore.
I am waiting for the episode "Why the iPhone has a screen"
Used that so much on my iPhone 5 lol
It would be cool if when assistive touch us on, it disables the swipe up function. I play Mobil games on my 13promax, and I swipe up by accident exiting the game. I tried to go around this my using this feature but it still swipes up when I don’t want to exit. iPhone 8 Plus is the biggest phone available that has a home button but it’s still kinda modern.
I didn’t know about this! Thanks!
When I saw the title of the video, I didn't know that iPhones did have a virtual home button I thought that only Androids had virtual home buttons and that iPhones used Sipe Navigation to go back to the home screen But now that I saw it I wish Androids had this function
I guess Androids has also assistive touch. I had Samsung before and I also found that feature.
What about Xiaomi?
Thank you
This button it’s really helpful
I didn’t knew how to turn it on
Bro you should do like a apple iceberg, ur voice is perfect
I used this alot when I changed my old phone's screen had to be changed and the home button didnt work.

Now I get it. Thanks for answering on “Why so many iPhone users use assistive touch.” But to me it’s distracting, so I never use it.

why the rotate screen doesnt work like how it used to be ? back then I believe you can use the rotate screen in assistive touch while your phone on locked screen rotation , so that you can rotate the screen to landscape and it locks it from going back to normal view .
My Iphone's 6s home button recently stopped working and this has come in soo much handy
I don’t have this feature but i’ve seen it on other devices like other iPhones it’s surprisingly good for a feature like this i’m sure people just think the home button sucked so no wonder why apple removed it they might want better probability’s.
It is also used to clear ram on your iPad or iPhone. This is needed in some cases when a restart isn´t fixing your problem
I broke my home button on my iPhone 6 around 2 years ago now, and I had to use the virtual home button for 8 months until I got an iPhone 8 for Christmas that year. It was annoying and slightly painful, but I'll always be grateful it existed then because it was the sole reason I had a phone for those 8 months.
Why NO Battery percentage on iPhone 13 with smaller notch? Explain plz
someone have bug when click on keyboard sound increase? same on notification and lock screen?
It’s also good if your actual home button breaks (and that can happen to newer models like the se2 )
Assistive touch was literally my best friend when I have my broken iPhone 4 with a dodgy home button
Great bro...u r under rated
Tip: press and hold the “Lock Screen” option in AssistiveTouch and you can turn off your phone without holding down the sleep/wake button
1:35 it’s faster holding down the side button because first you have to open up that home button menu lmao
some of my friends had ipads or iphones where their home button fell of from the glass breaking so it was really useful to them
Yea this is what happened to me on my iPhone 6, it is why I upgraded to the xr in 2018 because my 4 yo iPhone 6 button died out and I was using assistive touch- thought it was too inconvenient for the long term so just decided to upgrade.
I never understood the virtual home button until now. I used to think it was just to save the physical home button from being broken. Yet it had features that could be already performed by gestures that was already on the phone itself. Until now.
Salute To Apple 😇
AYOOOOOO WTF BRO THAT IPHONE 5C GOT CIRCULAR ASSISTIVE TOUCH!
I remember back when I had the iPhone 4 the home button stopped responding so I ended up using the additive touch for about year before upgrading.
i had an ipod touch 4G and the home button broke there, when i got iOS 5.0 i started using assistive touch on it

Hello! I was wondering if having 'low power mode' on all the time is a viable option when using an iphone daily, and can it make your battery worse and performance worse?
i always have low power mode on. It's a great battery saver because it turns off background app refresh!!!
@@melsyoutube oh I see, thank you!

Ok this changed my entire experience. 🤣
The thing that's always turned me off to this feature is the inability to lock it into a specific place. It's pretty easy to accidentally drag it to a new spot when trying to tap it. Sure it'll likely only move a few pixels, but just moments ago my OCD self just spent three minutes perfectly centering it at the bottom of the screen!
Wow, I never knew this existed but it’s really cool and convenient
