In my experience, when the brake fluid is low due to pad wear it's been years since the pads were changed, so I always check the pads and flush the fluid. If you don't, the brake fluid has absorbed contamination over the years and will corode the master cylinder and the calipers.

I had a problem with losing coolant. Not a lot but some. I noticed where it was dripping from. Right where the hose is connected to the engine. The previous shop has replaced my OEM hose with a one from a auto parts store. It wasn't quite a good fit and they had used the worm drive hose clamps. It didn't matter how tight I tighten the clamp. I replaced the hose with an OEM hose and got the factory spring hose clamps. My problem was fixed.
Point well taken with using the Car manufacturers fluid versus aftermarket brands. I had a rack and pinion that was leaking on a Honda and I was told by my mechanic that it was recommended to use only Honda Power steering fluid.
If your driving up a long mountain road and the engine starts to over heat, roll down your window and turn on the heater. It helps to cool the engine..
You don't have to drop the fuel tank to access the fuel pump on ALL cars, in fact a lot of car models have access doors for it often hidden under the rear seat or under the trunk carpeting. Check for it before you drop the tank, folks.

A clicking starter can also be a bad connection at the battery terminal. Especially the lead terminal connectors. Lots of people just push and twist without really tightening them and sometimes the lead gets a layer of oxidation on it that creates resistance to the flow of power. So try cleaning the clamps and terminals ...AND ALWAYS DISCONNECT NEGATIVE FIRST AND CONNECT POSITIVE FIRST. that way you won't arc out ever.

Im a new subscriber and i love your videos have been around autos all my life from racing cars to to automotive auto body shop for over 30 years just love to see how the new cars that are put out today just are not worth the money i have a 1989 f150 ford lariat with over 90.000 still runs like a brand new truck change oil ever 3500.
I actually explained the 1/4 tank rule and the reason it was important with respect to the electric fuel pump to my brother in law. He was running his car to empty and wondered why it wouldn't start right away after he filled it up with gas. He got lucky the fuel pump wasn't damaged.
3:44 Scotty, from one mechanic to another, spotted a _big _*_C.Y.A._*_ alert._ You didn't censor that license plate. Love your videos, bud! Your experience is *invaluable* to the auto world.
This morning I was in one of those chain repair shops and an eldery man was in for his oil change. They told him that his battery was very weak and would be $550 to replace!! The reason for the high fee was the time it will take to reprogram everything. Scotty taught me that there is a cheap memory saver that plugs into the OBD port and this shop must have had one. Total rip off.
Hope you said something to him. First, the battery was probably OK. Second, the computers will readjust automatically. The exception MIGHT be an antitheft system for the radio. Then you need the code. I have such a radio but it retains the code more than long enough to replace a battery.
Another reason you want to refill the gas at about 1/4 tank is you don't want whatever crap is at the bottom of the tank (and there usually is some) being pulled through that fuel pump and sent forward to the injectors - clogs 'em up, possibly even ruins 'em.
I used to use electrosol dishwasher powder to clean out the radiator and heater core. That stuff really cleaned it out and returned temps to normal for me on a 2000 dakota I had. I'd mix it in with regular water and run the engine for about a half hour at temp, and then drain and rinse. All kinds of gunk came out.
@@retroelectro1190 yes, but hes also stayed on top of technology throughout the years. Most independent mechanics are letting newer technology pass them by
8:39 When taking long road trips, I follow the quarter tank rule. Very helpful to avoid getting stranded! When driving locally, I'll let the tank run lower before refueling, but not so low that the fuel light turns on.
I can’t imagine Scotty explaining anything, or talking at all for that matter without moving his hands!! It’s like watching a conductor in front of an orchestra😂😂😂
Using non OEM fluids is like your doctor saying you need a blood transfusion and tells you that the aftermarket blood they want to give you is just as good as OEM Blood.
8:00 I have never run out of gas in 30 years of driving! Even when I was completely broke, I always had enough gasoline in my vehicle to get where I needed to go. Running out far from a fuel station is no fun!
There's some good info here disguised as maniacal ranting. Good video, Scotty. All your your videos are good, that's why you're so popular. I think you've achieved stardom. I see so many people who mention your name. Keep up the good work, sir.
@Thereal Blackwell it readed "possible" P0420 vacuum leak, fuel system fault, ignition system fault, Catalytic converter. I readed the manual book, claims to be fuel cap. I replace fuel cap and a week later it clear . Long as it clear I'm happy, save me few hundred dollars from going to the dealer, possible thousands
@Frank Olivieri I just readed the manual book, it claim to be a gas cap. I did go by autozone to have the codes read. Long as the codes clear on it's own I'm good
Regarding the heater core I had the issue with my accord. Turns out it was air locked despite literally hours of squeezing the hoses and topping off the res. I pushed a garden hose into the res to get an airtight seal, attached a funnel to it hanging it to the bonnet latch up high an bled her that way, been fine ever since.
Scotty, you should have told people to try and find a new gasket for the oem gas cap. I kept getting fuel system errors, no matter how much I tightened the cap. Welp, found a new seal for $1.28, put it on, problem solved. And I got to keep the original gas cap that came with the car.
My first vehicle, a 99 Dodge Dakota went through half the brake fluid about every day. I look in the rear drum brakes, and the cylinders were completely missing the rubber seals, so I was darn lucky that my brakes even worked!
My 2003 CLK Merc a/C stopped working, changed condenser, Stepper motor & compressor & now a/C works but have gradual engine coolant loss-keep topping up after every 5 km, but cannot see any leak. High pressure could force coolant out of escape hose.??? Help please Scotty.
That's not even a bit true - and a bad assumption. What Scotty said: Don't be alarmed when the fluid level decreases slowly. Fair implication: Get to know your car by inspecting the level every week, so you know what is "normal" (taking into account the number & severity of brake applications). Judging the RATE of pad wear doesn't tell you anything about how much friction material remains. Good mechanics will look at the thickness and report to you at every service. They will also look around for leaks (while the car is up on a hoist, or over a pit) before disturbing the evidence with the normal service schedule. Also, ask your tyre dealer to look at the pad thickness every time the wheels are off.
I have found that keeping the top half of the gas tank full cost the same as keeping the bottom half full. And it has the advantage of keeping you running if you can not fill up the tank because you are low on cash or in the middle of nowhere when you reach the half full mark on the gauge.
And cleaning those battery cables is a great idea to I don't know how many times I've jumped my friends and they Hey have corrosion all over their cables where they connect to the battery very important keep dump Queen
@@C.G91 - Disconnect the terminals, and soft brush away the big loose corrosion. Then scrub the terminals and the posts with a wire brush until they're shiny again. Install felt pads and dielectric grease on your posts. Hook it all back up.
Taha Khattabi my 2007 Chevy cobalt is sound with 152k miles, transmission seems kind of clunky but reverse still works and I don’t have to tap the gas for it to reverse and it can still creep in traffic with no problem
I really admire your efforts, and wonder from where you the get the ability to shoot a video every day. I'm George from Egypt, very fond of cars since I was a kid, and I'm following you 2 years ago and watched all your videos. Thank you
Fun story, one time me car wouldnt start, there was a wire that had corroded and broke, it was copper. just so happened to have industrial copper wire around. put that on the starter, it worked for another year until i had to go across a flash flood pool. probably would still have it otherwise, the brushes still had about half their life left.
I wish I had Scotty's energy and love of mechanics. I used to always work on my cars when I was young. Now I'm old, fat and lazy. I hate to pay a mechanic. But, I just can't get motivated to fix my car. I hate getting old 👴😴🤦♂️
Hardest part about doing anything is the initial motivation. Just have to dive right into it and get going and once you get going the rest takes care of it self.

So glad I know these tricks now. I wish I had known these tricks before I wrecked my Xterra or when my ex's Elantra failed to start.
And clean or replace the cabin air filter.
Many cars don't even come with them, you have to cut the cover off and put one in yourself.
I'll had two cars and the old owners never changed them 2005 trailblazer and 2001 silverado they would just say the ac wasnt that strong....The cabin filters were that dirty it was nasty cant imagine all the time they keep it running like that ,I smelled it also changed it immediately lol

M Detlef that's why your AC doesn't blow that hard anymore I bet if you do it you'd be very surprised I change my filter once ever 2 years but clean it every six months
Exactly !
Hope you said something to him. First, the battery was probably OK. Second, the computers will readjust automatically. The exception MIGHT be an antitheft system for the radio. Then you need the code. I have such a radio but it retains the code more than long enough to replace a battery.
wholeNwon what if you don’t have the code anymore? I have a ford fiesta 2005 with a cd 6000 radio but I don’t have the code :(
@@furkanapaydin8933 Did you check on line to see if you need the code to change a battery?
@@furkanapaydin8933 I see there are instructions on line for that radio, too.
Another reason you want to refill the gas at about 1/4 tank is you don't want whatever crap is at the bottom of the tank (and there usually is some) being pulled through that fuel pump and sent forward to the injectors - clogs 'em up, possibly even ruins 'em.
10:09 I’m dying 😂💀💀 that username
That's a reference from ownage pranks 😂😂💀
I bought my 2012 Fusion this spring for one reason. Scotty recommended it.
Excellent info as always, thank you Scotty!
This man is legitimately a genius. Unbelievable how smart he is.
It's called common sense in rural America.

I refuel at a half tank to avoid sticker shock at the pump!
I can’t imagine Scotty explaining anything, or talking at all for that matter without moving his hands!! It’s like watching a conductor in front of an orchestra😂😂😂
Scotty stay blessed!!!!
Your advices assist us a lot in dealing with cars
Love u buddy
I’m very thankful of all the video of Sir Scotty, very informative. Thank you so much sir. Avid supporter here👍🙏
My dad: “don’t let the gas get too low!”
Your videos help me out with many of my problems. I can never go back to Nissan.
I use a k&n air filter where I can clean it and re use it
Using non OEM fluids is like your doctor saying you need a blood transfusion and tells you that the aftermarket blood they want to give you is just as good as OEM Blood.
8:14 Wait, has the cat been there the whole time!? Aw! Those cute little ears are adorable.
Excellent, these things that should be done before you run to a shop . Great video again most of these should done a few times a year
8:00 I have never run out of gas in 30 years of driving! Even when I was completely broke, I always had enough gasoline in my vehicle to get where I needed to go. Running out far from a fuel station is no fun!
I ran out of gas once. She didn't tell me the gas gauge wasn't going below half tank.
There's some good info here disguised as maniacal ranting. Good video, Scotty. All your your videos are good, that's why you're so popular. I think you've achieved stardom. I see so many people who mention your name. Keep up the good work, sir.
My Nissan Altima 2010 for the first time had a check engine light.
I just simply replace the gas cap, 5 days later it went away
Daniel Garcia has cap?
Daniel Garcia Good way to get rid of a Nissan!
Long as the codes clear on it's own I'm good
@@jamespfitz been 2 months, no check engine light
Regarding the heater core I had the issue with my accord. Turns out it was air locked despite literally hours of squeezing the hoses and topping off the res. I pushed a garden hose into the res to get an airtight seal, attached a funnel to it hanging it to the bonnet latch up high an bled her that way, been fine ever since.
(8:22) - KITTY ALERT! Sitting on the car roof, peeking over the open hood... Very Clever!

I love when the Cat makes an appearance.

The cat is startled by the distant sirens .
Scotty, you should have told people to try and find a new gasket for the oem gas cap. I kept getting fuel system errors, no matter how much I tightened the cap. Welp, found a new seal for $1.28, put it on, problem solved. And I got to keep the original gas cap that came with the car.
Scotty you the man ..keep it up and thanks for all the info!!
My first vehicle, a 99 Dodge Dakota went through half the brake fluid about every day. I look in the rear drum brakes, and the cylinders were completely missing the rubber seals, so I was darn lucky that my brakes even worked!
Scotty, you are a life safer my dude 🙏
Very good, free information that can save us some money. Thank you
Scotty you are the man.
Fun Fact: If you rev'd up your engines every time Scotty put out a video, your engine would blow up.
Not mine, i own a 14 sonata!
My 2003 CLK Merc a/C stopped working, changed condenser, Stepper motor & compressor & now a/C works but have gradual engine coolant loss-keep topping up after every 5 km, but cannot see any leak.
High pressure could force coolant out of escape hose.??? Help please Scotty.

hahaha you're pop up images kill me! Keep up the good work Scotty!
Omg, so I can figure out how low my pads are getting based on the amount of fluid in the reservoir? Neat. (Assuming there are no leaks ofc)
It's not well known but Scorty started his life as an italian waiter. 😂
I'll let y'all figure out why.
The purge solenoid on the firewall is a common cause of an evap code. Underwear-part from yard fixed mine.
And cleaning those battery cables is a great idea to I don't know how many times I've jumped my friends and they Hey have corrosion all over their cables where they connect to the battery very important keep dump Queen
What type of clean do we use?
@@C.G91 - Disconnect the terminals, and soft brush away the big loose corrosion. Then scrub the terminals and the posts with a wire brush until they're shiny again. Install felt pads and dielectric grease on your posts. Hook it all back up.
You are awesome Scotty
Last time I was this early, GM still made reliable vehicles.

Hardest part about doing anything is the initial motivation. Just have to dive right into it and get going and once you get going the rest takes care of it self.
