True. But these are still highly simple awd systems most mechanics can work on and you can rely on.
New cars more and more have issues with how many sensors they have and if one goes out the whole car stops to work properly and in some cases can loose their AWD capabilties at all and go in 2WD mode.
So I agree new AWD systems work great on rollers but not so great in the real world. Those high tech AWD systems also tend to su*k on soft roads when it goes uphill and in true offroad situation because it just doesnt keeps the momentum going, if you watch closely these newer cars (except of a few like subaru) never really power all wheels at the same time which is a big flaw when youre truly stuck somewhere.
Everything has pros and cons I personally rather have AWD car that I can rely on rather than some fancy new gadget filled crossover that is pretty much only good on icey streets.

In real world, the e46 system actually works pretty well. I own e46 330xd, facelift. We have some good snow here and hills too. From standing still, climbing a hill, both right or left wheels on ice the other two wheels on a clean asphalt. ESP is on, the yellow triangle flashes few times, than the car starts to pull and there you go. The case in these kind of tests is that the rollers have almost zero friction, while in real conditions it's not exactly that way. That's why some systems look not that good on rollers, but work pretty well in real world. And just one last thing. Torsen quattro on b5 maybe is better to get out of snow/mud, but wacks in cornering, because most of the time it's 50/50 front/rear. They understeer, while e46 got constant 38/62 front/rear and does much better in corners. Let's be honest, these cars are not made for offroad. So IMO quattro is not superior to e46 system (it's also very reliable too). Both systems have their pros and cons. :)

I don't understand this video result, i have same system as E46 on that vid has, on my E53, only difference in transfer box is chain instead of gear drive. So also no xDrive. Still it never does like on that E46 on this video, unless I have faulty ABS sensor. I think that car has some problem with Abs system, or just on brakes, maybe stuck.

@@4x4.tests.on.rollers It's made in -01. But it transfers the power pretty heavily in slipping tires, buch more than E46. No xDrive, if happens to break ABS sensor it's 1 wheel spinning only. My father has an first gen E83, it has an xDrive, now recently it lost one ABS sensor, tested how it does and it spins one wheel at front and one on the back with no locking anything else than the transfer case pack. Without any technical failuresthere is not much difference on them. X5 without xDrive goes better on heavy snow just because of ground clearance. And still about this video results, they seem to be like different system because E53 works with heavier power on brakes.

Finally, I'm not too surprised. The reputation of this BMW E46 is not great in terms of 4wd transmission.
ADB-X is not sufficient to brake and transfer enough torque, and replace a central LSD. ADB-X is not helping by the torque distribution. Strangely, the reputation of the X5 E53 without X-Drive (before 2003) is better. To check ;-) . The Audi has a Torsen center differential. If you apply the brakes moderately it will direct more power to the end of the car that has grip than the brakes take away. It should be able to drive off of the setups with two fronts slipping or with two rears slipping easily with the brakes applied. The scenarios with one front and one rear slipping will still rely on the ESP system, or really EDL, to get it going, but that should also work better with the brakes lightly to moderately applied.

Mało kto kuma, że napęd to wahacze, zawieszenie, rodzaj zawieszenia obu osi, elektronika obu osi i dopiero dyferencjały, to tworzy napęd.

Centralny dyfer w Audi ma 50/50, a w Bmw 38/62, stąd zapewne ta różnica.

Does the BMW transfer ANY significant torque % to the front wheels? The front wheels barely moved.

It does. When rear wheels were on rollers, front pulled the car forward.

38% of the torque is always going to the front. But it has an open center diff, so 38% of however little torque the engine needed to spin the back wheels isnt enough to spin the wheels with traction.
