"Valet out for the evening..." "They always are." "All housekeepers asleep, they heard nothing.." "They never do." LOL. I love the interplay between these two.
The way he asks Watson not to reveal all to lady Hilda( 5.03).superb!!!! And that infectious smile of his. He is keen enough to see through her agitation.
After watching all Sherlock's I was able to find, I reached the conclusion that Brett is the most accurate to the books. Aaand I love the way he talks XD
+Adriana Cuadrado Agreed! I've read about half of the canon Holmes stories, and I believe Jeremy Brett fits the role perfectly. Nobody else comes close.
Brett is a wonderful actor, and he is the closest to canon, however I think that there are many other actors who have succeeded in portraying the role superbly, by adapting the character to fit different circumstances, and to keep the stories alive. Without the modern adaptations, many people would not go back to look at the originals.
"And yet the motives of women are so inscrutable. I mean how can you build on SUCH a quicksand?! Their most trivial action may mean volumes, or the most extraordinary conduct may depend on a hair pin or a curling tong"
"And yet the motives of women are SO inscrutible, I mean how could you BUILD on such a quicksand! Thier most trivial action may mean volumes or their most EXTRAORDINARY conduct may depend upon a hairpin or a curling tong, yes..." It's like he's speaking my mind...in a most Victorian, Holmesian way!
Ha ha ha.... This Watson is a little dominant than Burke's Watson. Did you all note how he snatches the half finished coffee cup from Holmes's hand when the clients arrive? 😧😧😧😧
@shizzlepie Brett was such an amazing actor. Shame most people, movie-goers even, never heard of him. At 6:57 he reminds me of Mark Strong, another most brilliant actor.
@turockandar between the readers active participation and Dolyes genius for description; his mental attributes far outweighing his purely physical description. Doyle thus made Holmes so powerful that till this day many people feel that he actually existed. Doyle was an opthalmologist and yet it was his "inner eye" which perceived the real depth of the characters he created. Brett brings passion and dedication to the role but the 'true' Holmes cannot be incarnated in film.
From what I understand, the place where you put your calling card on a tray indicated the urgency of your visit, though I forget which place indicated this degree. Has anybody else ever heard of this Victorian custom?
It's just this computer of mine...I go back on and all of a sudden it works...figures, as soon as I say something about something not working, it works...how ANNOYING...oh well, at least I can watch it now. :D
@KurtAngle89 Ha ha ha the "suddenly raised voice" reminiscent of Pacino in Heat sudden raising his voice comically (probably intimidated by De Niro's reputation). You, like me, are a purist I imagine.I must say that agree that a "perfect" Homles will not come as an actor for the following reason; as Shakespeare before him Conan Dolye had a genius for descriptive language which conjured exceptionally strong visual images and for character building. The character of Holmes comes from the synergy..
Perhaps this recognised apparent trait, could/should have been provided more light in order to discover possible challenges an honourable person like Dr.Watson might have as a man. We can consider after many episodes, Holmes receives his stimulants by other means.
@amit79ful It is a Nietzschian and Schopenhaueresque statement of the inferiority of women pure and simple for as the former wrote in Beyond Good and evil: "Where neither love nor hate is in the game a woman is a mediocre player" followed by:"Comparing man and woman in general one may say: women would not have the genius for finery if she did not have the instinct for the secondary role". Quad erat demonstrandum!
aren't they horrible! half the fun of watching these episodes on youtube is reading and sharing thougths thru posts, like friends! sifting thru spam ruins it!
Ok, i'm ready to be insulted by a million people at a time, but it REALLY irritates me the way Brett raises his voice with no apparent reason while speaking. And, i recognise he is the actor who put the more effort, passion, and dedication (even to the extreme) to the role of Holmes, thing for wich i respect him immensely, but i DO NOT consider him the perfect, insuperable Holmes. In my humble hopinion, a "perfect" Holmes is yet to come, and maybe won't ever come. Just personal opinion.
KurtAngle89 Sherlock in the books is described as having "mood swings" and very dramatic ones at that. He would very often raise his voice without any indication (much to the annoyance to Watson sometimes) or reason in the books this is why Brett does it because it was how the original Holmes behaved
Love Holmes' replies "they always are" & " They never do" so deadpan and sarcastic !
"Valet out for the evening..."
"They always are."
"All housekeepers asleep, they heard nothing.."
"They never do."
LOL. I love the interplay between these two.
I've been binginbg on Holmes in three versions... but Brett and his Watson are the very best, capturing the spirit of the written stories.
The best directory the best casting the best titrage .... the best in everything. The best wishes for you. Thanks so much. I love this serial.

I Agree with you completely

Astoundingly brilliant performances!
"they always are." "they never do." LOL love ya SH

Swear, with every episode of I watch..I learn a new word
Yes the character needs a large vocabulary for verisimilitude.
Valets are always gone and the neighbors never see anything! How true.
I love that hand gesture he makes at 7:07, and that smirk at 7:18-19 *drools* Brilliant!
"And yet the motives of women are so inscrutable. I mean how can you build on SUCH a quicksand?! Their most trivial action may mean volumes, or the most extraordinary conduct may depend on a hair pin or a curling tong"
excellent cast, what a group of great actors.
sherlock holmes is undoubtedly the best detective ever!
"And yet the motives of women are SO inscrutible, I mean how could you BUILD on such a quicksand! Thier most trivial action may mean volumes or their most EXTRAORDINARY conduct may depend upon a hairpin or a curling tong, yes..."
It's like he's speaking my mind...in a most Victorian, Holmesian way!
"Oh, if it's on the market, I'll buy it! If it means another penny on income tax!"
Watson:"What a really remarkable and beautiful woman"!!!
Holmes:"mmmm....The fair sex is Your department Watson"!!!!!
lol
"Hmm...fairsex is you're department Watson, what did u really want"....he sounded like Dr.Hanibal Lecter, cool and sarcastic!!
crikey! you know you're in trouble when even Sherlock Holmes says the games up :()
Ha ha ha.... This Watson is a little dominant than Burke's Watson. Did you all note how he snatches the half finished coffee cup from Holmes's hand when the clients arrive? 😧😧😧😧
The woman that plays Lady Hope is stunning.

how could you build on such a quicksand?
Jeremy Brett is absolutely perfect as Holmes
"Mmmm! The fair sex is your department Watson...."

Great acting by Harry Andrews, the Prime Minister.
Patricia Hodge is stunning!
The first Holmes-story is "A Study In Scarlett"...
kristinesbluebird - damn right!
How..can you build on that quicksand?..
For some reason it won't work for me...it says the video is no longer available. :(
Indeed, very delightful, as well!....*Sighs in love*
Thanks!

@lonepantherkmt
LOL! It's all for Holmes and, ultimately, for himself. ;) :D
hehe, Watson finds all women remarkable and beautiful. :)
Perhaps this recognised apparent trait, could/should have been provided more light in order to discover possible challenges an honourable person like Dr.Watson might have as a man. We can consider after many episodes, Holmes receives his stimulants by other means.
Gosh,she is Miranda'mother,a pretty women!
Wow she just looks so untrustworthy as the camera zooms in on her! :P 5:10 onward

I prefer David burke as watson than Edward hardwicke
There is nothing I can say against Hardwicke. But I miss Burke a lot.
I like them both for different reasons. Burke made me chuckle though.
resssssst-lesssssssss-nessssssssss
mmmmmm
