  • First look and honest review. To head off a possible differing of opinion, some might say I am confusing what a remaster and a remix can do to an reissue. I do reference that in my review and stand by that a remaster can correct the deficiencies I reference in the video. Cheers everyone :)

I respect your review. I have the "black" double album version of what you have. To me it sounds amazing. In fact, Hysteria and Love Bites put tears in my eyes.

your opinion is correct the other 3 albums do deserve a re issue as they are just that good high and dry is one of there best albums.

Thanks for the honest review. I think I'll stick with my original copy. I do believe the original cassette had the lyrics printed on the inner sleeve.

Nathan Bouchard I remembered after the fact the yes indeed you are right, the tape did have lyrics although I'm sure it was printed so small I couldn't read it :-)

Great video, David. I hate to hear that you were underwhelmed by the new re-issue. I would think the same thing with the expanded dynamic range considering they pressed it as a 2 LP set. Disappointed to hear that it wasn't all you expected it to be. I'll just stick with my originals. :)

Thanks for the review. I did a 30th anniversary review a couple of weeks ago but you touched on more of the listening experience and mastering than I did (plus I was reviewing the original pressing). It's not surprising that the original pressing was a bit lacking in the bass. It's one of the longest albums ever pressed to a single record, which means the grooves are packed more tightly together. Whenever that happens, losing some of the lower frequencies is very common. I don't think the original pressing sounds that good... it sounds much better on CD, to be honest. But hey, you've got to have it... it's Hysteria!
You can get the new pressing for way less than $35. Amazon has it for around $26. Same double vinyl, only black and not orange. I'd rather have the black and save $9, although I appreciate the orange is a limited edition and will probably be worth more in the future.

Enjoyed the review David although our opinions differ somewhat on the orange anniversary release. Just goes to show we all have different ears. I bought it without much optimism for a great sounding re-issue. For my part I thought it sounded good compared to my original and really really good compared to the 2008 re-issue. Totally agree with your thoughts on other albums in their catalogue needing to be re-pressed. I'd even be interested in the post Slang albums being on vinyl. Anyway, dig the videos and hope you keep them coming.

Jeremy Whisenant Possibly my expectations were too high and have to say I did say it was good, just a little flat to me but it's tough to improve production perfection from Mutt Lange. I'm happy with it but just hoped for more. I'd also like to see X and Euphoria on vinyl as well!

Honestly, I did prefer the original master. The production was so good to start with it would’ve been almost impossible to improve in my opinion

Nazz Nomad I totally agree. I’m a diehard fan but the box set sound wasn’t the only issue I had with it. The multiple releases of the same material is disappointing. Maybe this new vinyl set in June will correct the sound issue. Problem is, do I really want to spend $165 on something that I have and may be disappointed in just to own it?

Thanks for the review on the Orange edition release... great to hear the honest feedback that you prefer the CD. Are you planning on reviewing the reissue vinyl box set which includes their first three albums?

Thanks for being honest. FWIW, it would be helpful to know what kind of cartridge and phono stage you are using...that would have a huge effect on how much detail you would hear out of the pressing.
Note that I haven't heard this new pressing or the '87 one. The last time I heard this album was on cassette back in the early 90s. Got burnt out on hair bands a long time ago and can only really listen to DL's first two albums these days (pre-hair band era).
Also FWIW, some albums just sound better on CD.

Thanks for the review. It sounds like they only did a digital remaster and used it for the vinyl pressing. Too many record companies are doing that to save time and money. The original album was an hour of music and the mastering engineers had to lower the bass EQ to make the grooves smaller to fit on the disc.

They should have remixed it. I do not care if Mutt is too old or slow to do the job nxt time round. Would actually prefer some New kid on the Block or other sound legend to put his fingerprints on this album. One of my favorite albums. After pyromania I waited several agony filled years for this follow up. They did not let me Down. That said. Ready b-sides like fractured love and especially ring of fire should have been on this album instead of the horrible excitable and forgettable pour some sugar on me. It still would have done 15 million With the love bites and animal singles plus others... I repeat, Remix this album and make it interesting for us fans. A remix, done by someone the lepps trust in 2022. Make Women explode! Make Gods of war come roaring out of the speakers.

hasekdom I agree a remix would have been interesting as long as keep all the elements intact. Would have liked someone to boost guitar and do some interesting things with the effects, to bring them more up front. My opinion anyways :)

Looks like this was cut by Greg Moore. I'm not super familiar with his work, but one should keep in mind that even if the lacquer cutting engineer does the best job they can, things can be severely compromised if they are given a source by the label that is less than ideal (e.g. something that's been badly eq'd and/or boosted to the point of clipping).

mastering and mixing are two different things. By virtue of the 2lp format it would have to remastered (recut).

the cd has NO lyrics. I can't tell a difference when I have a album on my Walkman it sounds just like the vinyl. I can't tell those little suttle whatever you were saying. I have the album on cd.
did I hear you say something like color albums were out in 1987 or so I don't rember seeing colored vinyl until I ended up seeing some vinyl collections on you tube?

    • @nazznomad
      @nazznomad  7 лет назад

+Mark Santucci Hi, no I didn't say colour vinyl was out in 1987, I have to rewatch the video and see if I said something and skipped up there. There's little underlying effects that you can hear in gods of war and a few other songs that I was hoping were more pronounced in the new pressing but those are mostly noticeable on the CD to be honest with you
