My son was born in the middle of Chicago 99 blizzard an my father literally had to dig a tunnel out an seen a plow truck he told them I was in labor an that nice plow driver plowed us all the way to the hospital an I gave my son the man name as his middle name bc that man truly saved our lives❤️ prayers for all of New York 🙏🏽

Wow what an amazing story!!! ❤️

From Buffalo; this video doesn’t even begin to describe just how crazy this storm was! The drifts were taller than some buildings. The cold was menacing & permeated whatever layers you had on. The blowing snow whipped everywhere it could find.
It was the first time in my 34 years living here that I was worried about making it through a storm.
@James Jones
I can’t recall a blizzard in ‘96 but I was young enough I wouldn’t remember it really if there was. 10 ft high snow walls sounds wild though! I’d have been making igloos or snow-skating down them all day.
The storm got alot of people stuck, that even someone decided to bring a person stuck in the snow to my house.
Type of stuff you tell your grandkids
And how do you think the wild life and stray animals felt?
@@PaigePlates Dead and cold, I mean, all the animals flew south or sumthin'.
When we opened my garage, it was a wall of snow. The drifts could swallow my husband. It was insane! I am so grateful we kept power and managed to dig out today...

I'll be honest, everything covered in snow looks incredibly beautiful.
At least you’re honest.
It does
Have some empathy smh. People died in this extreme storm.
@@jinwoo78 People die everyday, how does that change how beautiful the world looks covered in snow?? You being mad at someone over the internet isn't gonna bring them back to life so I'm not sure what you think you achieved here. Unclench and relax, every single thing that is alive will die someday, you and I included. I choose to spend my limited time on Earth seeing the beauty in all things, you are choosing to spend yours talking down to people you don't even know on the internet. That alone speaks for itself. I don't lack empathy, you just lack general understanding of life.
Agree! It's a horrifying beauty though- akin to to the destructive wonder of tornadoes and volcanoes.
I was just speaking to my very good friend about this. We both give our best wishes and condolences for this terrible storm. I’m so sorry for all the people in trouble because of this. I will pray for everyone’s safety and if anyone from New York even notices this comment please don’t give up hope. Cause it’s always there for us all. 💖
I have lived in the Buffalo area for 50 years. I was only 6 years old for the Blizzard of 77 so I don't remember much of that but this what set this apart from other storms was the wind. We get cold and snow but to add 70 mph winds is what made this crazy. At times I couldn't see 10ft out mid windows. Luckily we never lost power or heat. Planning ahead was the best thing we did. Feel bad for those who lost loved ones who were simply trying to get home. Most people did stay home and were safe. Huge shout out to those who risked their lives to help others in need. Those who took people, strangers, in to make sure they were safe. Sadly there were some who felt that it was a good idea to break into places and steal. I hope those that did it was to feed the hungry, all others, well lets say their time will come and they will have to answer for what they did.

As a Minnesotan, half these images are scary, and the other half are… just a normal winter day. ❄️ Makes me feel grateful for the snow removal infrastructure here in MN.*
*Meaning, they don't have the infrastructure in Tennessee and Texas! I'm sure New England and Canada have the whole snow removal thing mastered.
That is the point- to scare
I mean, Buffalo is pretty used to massive amounts of snow, but 50inches? Very, very few places have the infrastructure to deal with. With dozens dead from the storm, it brings me shivers what the toll would be in less prepared locations
daytime temperatures in the northeast spend as much time over 50 degrees as they do below it during the winter now. these weather events happen once a year now and last for 5 days. Minnesota does not get that much wind and snow in a short period of time, pretty much ever.
Minnesota gets it fair share of snow and certainly cold but this was at another level for sure. I am not sure the last time Minnesota received over 50 inches of snow with over 50 mph winds for days. I live in rural New England mountain town but I have never experienced anything like that before and I doubt Minnesota has either. Your snowiest city-town Duluth gets about 80 inches a year, which to be honest is not very much. Parts of Vermont average over 300 inches and 175 is no big deal.

And now a week later it's +60°F warmer. What a world we live in
Before my dad sold the place, we had our summer house in Crystal Beach right on the lake, across the street from the motel, the street with the Palmwood restaurant at the beginning. Ours was maybe the fifth house down from the Palmwood. I imagine the place is still there, but I haven't been there in years. We only stayed in the "Beach House" in the summers. Lake Erie was our back yard. One winter dad took us out, the lake behind the house had frozen quite a ways out, and there was ice in the shape of waves, like "curlers", as if a bunch of 3' curling waves had frozen solid. It was very bizarre, Idk what condition could cause this to happen. Most of the houses on our block were only inhabited during the summer/ warm months, and you can see why. The "icing" on the houses right on the lake is a regular thing in winter.
Dang, it must be nice to have more than one house, unlike these people.
@@NobuxD Dad worked out of Buffalo, for Otis elevator. In the winter, we always just rented in Buffalo, stayed in Canada in the summers. We were what's called "landed immigrants", so we never had to stop at customs crossing over. Lots of people do this.
@@andyginterblues2961 - The Palmwood is gone. Many of the houses along the shore have their windows smashed and icebergs in their living rooms on a regular basis now due prevailing winds. The water levels are rising and the storms worse and more frequent. Severe storms are no longer rare at any time of year. Due to COVID with the border closures and the increasing frequency of the storms, many homes that have been in American families for generations are up for sale. The places at the start of the video are where the old Crystal Beach Park used to be, now a gated community. Lake front property ain't what it used to be.
I hope people don’t live in those homes full time, or they’re very well insulated. I suppose the ice covering does insulate them too. It’s an oddly beautiful image.
@@susieq9801 Wow. Thanks for the updated info. Dad re- married years ago and his second wife had him sell the house even though mom was supposed to get first bid. I have fond memories of spending summers in the house and going to the amusement park and the beach. I could have guessed that the Palmwood is no longer there, it burned to the ground in the 1960's and was rebuilt. My dad had the bartender pour me my first glass of O'Keefe ale there when I was five years old! I had a DVD copy of the movie that someone made about the amusement park. (lost in moving) and also at one time tried to locate any members of the Hungarian family who used to own the motel by our house, the Banfi's. Probably they are long gone as well.
Praying for you, from Spain.
Doesn't that happen every time to the homes by the lakes? I feel like they always have something more extreme happen every year.

Every year, for how long?
Is it always the same slope? Or are we missing the big picture ups and downs?
I don't think it gets more extreme. The media just reports in it non stop to spread the hype and fear. And the more people continue to build on lakeshore, riverside, the more ice, floods and hurricanes will do damage because there are simply more structures to be affected. Flooding in big cities gets worse because drainage was not a thought as they continued to build and build and build and build, and drop more and more concrete. These storms have happened through out history, but there was no social media and a pea sized population. Add people, build more, report more, and suddenly it is dubbed the storm of the century. Doesn't help that it occurred in the busiest travel time of the year when millions more than usual are on the roads and in airports.
The way everything froze over reminds me of the Novosibirsk level in Metro Exodus.

The people in Japan are smart in construction of buildings and houses in that their roofs don't collapse from the weight of the snow. Japan gets these Atmospheric Rivers traveling from Southeastern China northeasterly towards Japan and they get one of snowest place on earth. I seen a guy clearing off snow on a building's roof that was 9 feet deep on RUclips. Western Japan is famous for the Snow Wall there. RUclips has videos this wall. This wall was 19 METERS HIGH = OVER 62 FEET HIGH in April, 2017. Does Buffalo have a wall of snow the height of 4 city buses like this wall was?
I’m going to say no. You’re sounding a bit nuts by the way and people in North America know how to build roofs that can withstand the snow load. See, we put and angle on them. 😮 not many completely flat roofs and if so you REMOVE it before it gets to the point of collapsing.
@@CANControlGRAFFITI, I shoveled snow off my parents house with my brothers years ago. The deepest was about 3 feet in this trough or dip by the chimney. Granted this wasn't like happened in Buffalo and Orchard Park, New York this winter. But just go to RUclips videos of Snow removal from roofs in Japan. Also snowplowing roads in Japan. They get 7-9 feet of snow in just two days 8 out 10 years. They get Atmospheric Rivers like happened to Orchard Park, etc this winter. This is all because storms traveling from Southeastern China in a northeastern direction to Japan.
Another thing to look is the Snow Wall there in Western Japan on RUclips videos. When was the last time a wall of snow the height of 4 city buses plus in Buffalo, etc. This Western Japan is known as the "Alps of Japan". The highest peaks are in the 9,00 feet elevation. It's not so much the height of these peaks, it's because the clouds picking up that moisture over the Sea of Japan.
@@CANControlGRAFFITI, I didn't state that Japan uses steel in their roofs to withstand the weight of the snow.
The things is, Japan sees very large amounts of snow every year. It is easier for people and busineses to prepare, not to mention the govt allocating the proper funds for snow plow trucks and the materials needed to clear roadways, when it's expected a year in advance. I don't think people in these areas expected to experience something this severe. I could be wrong tho. 😕

Yes and worst it's the last days like California fires and fires and droughts
Yep just like it had for hundreds of years previously 😂
Well global warming stopped 5 years ago so you can expect it to get worse next 20 years.
@@nicolelitwicki6600 remember when they were warning of an ice age in the 60s and 70s... But then they realized that things would never really get covered in ice so they decided to change it to global warming... But then the globe never really got hotter so they just called it "climate change".
All a hoax to launder tax payer money and take away your freedoms.
Like the last billion years,... yes.
I’m so glad it just passed our spot in Wisconsin, we got a crap ton of wind and a few inches now it’s back to 30s r.i.p people who didn’t make it
People please be careful, and when they tell you not to go out, don’t go out I’m from the island and even though we have tons of experience as New Yorkers and I have lots of experience growing up my winters in Pennsylvania as a kid, I know that we think that we’re at first but when they tell you not to go out, it’s for a reason Stay safe 🙏🏼🙏🏼
God, that's rough...
I know it sounds kinda horrible but I wish I could experience this blizzard. Understand I’ve spent my entire life in Florida and have never seen snow in person. Where I am it’s hot enough to go to the beach on Christmas Day (not exaggerating, for real). When it’s cold it only lasts a month and never really gets below 40. To me this looks like a surreal wonderland when you take out the death toll.
Ohhhh, so you’re a bot. Reported.
Помогай вам Бог, добрые люди.
If I'm not mistaken the storm's name was Elliot. Elliot etymologically means Elijah. 🙃
