    Here what I don’t get. There’s an SSD in there, and if they used a thunderbolt 4 connector, they would be able to give TONS of bandwidth to that M.2 SSD and still max out those front-facing ports at the same time. It’s a strange compromise.

      That would be sweet. If I was cynical I would guess that it has to do with the Intel Mac Mini that came before M1 only has Thunderbolt 3. They still sell hubs for that Mini, so it’s probably a way to cut costs. 😕

    I am using the exact same SSD and it won’t fit into the slot. I am not a happy camper.

    great video, how is it holding out? any issues after a year? and are you still happy with the speed? thanks

      Thx!
      It still runs without issues. All the ports work, and the speed is adequate. I don’t use the internal SSD for editing anymore. Not because it was too slow, but because I create bigger files due to filming in higher quality. I use the Mini’s SSD (512GB) for applications, the Sateshi SSD (1TB)for general files and photos, and a SanDisk Extreme SSD (2TB) for video file storage and editing. I still plug in the SanDisk through the hub, so there is a loss in transfer speed, compared to using the ports on the Mini. Not something I notice in practice.

    satechi is great!!!in the older iteration of this hub, audio jack was faulty, and they refund me fully!!!

    It's not that great - the M.2 slot supports older and slower SSD drives only.

    Great video, cheers :)
    If using 2.5" and 3.5" hard drives and connecting to the front USB ports would you expect a significant loss in data transfer speed? TIA

      Thx Duncan! Good question. I tried it with two 2.5" hdd. A WD Elements (usb 3.0) and a Seagate Expansion (USB 3.1). While there was a difference between the disks,
      I saw no noticeable difference in speeds between the Satechi USB ports on the front, vs the Mini ports in the back.
      WD got a read speed of 100.8 MB/s vs 100.9 MB/s, write speed was 101.8 MB/s vs 101.7 MB/s.
      Seagate read: 130.6 MB/s vs 126.7 MB/s, and write: 134.9 MB/s vs 128.2 MB/s.
      TLDR: No, not really.

    The Mac Mini has a headphone jack, that's superfluous...

    Can you stack two satechi hubs

    • @Leninzkis
      @Leninzkis  2 года назад +2

      Great question! I don’t have two to verify, but looking at it I’d say: probably you could. The USB-C cable should be long enough for the bottom hub, and the Mini has two ports on the back. You would have to use the HDMI port on the mini for your monitor.

      I have two Satechi hubs and two minis. The M1 matches, the M2 mini pro is lighter than the hub in color.

      Valid question. Mostly peripherals, I use it for my SSD.

    that's amazing that you could edit of Final Cut Pro from the satechi hub. I mostly use Logic Pro and final cut and was wondering this exact thing. if the usb c is able to run sample libraries or final cut projects without any problems. my old intel Mac was using normal HDD and it required a power hub. are there any problems since making this video? thanks please let me know

    • @Leninzkis
      @Leninzkis  Год назад +1

      I am very pleased with the capabilites of the hub and the mini. It still runs without anyhing I would call a ”problem”. I have experienced some lagging when working on the PenTips review video. That video had a lot of titles, transitions, effects and masks. Playback at full resolution would stutter and drop a few frames in 1-2 places. One of those was the scene at 7:35. Lowering playback quality and letting it render helped. These days I edit off the Sandisk Extreme Portable SSD, so I can work on different computers. I still connect it to the hubs usb-c, so that limits the transfer speed a lot compared to connecting it directly to the mini, but it is still faster than the WD inside the hub. Despite the bottleneck, I can edit 4K 10-bit footage from the SanDisk Extreme, through the hub, without problems so far. Size of your timeline, amount of effects, video codecs, etc all come into play however. So I’d say editing from the hubs SSD works great in most situations for the average content creator. If you have large timelines with many tracks, it might not run smoothly, but it is probably still very editable. If you need to step it up from there, you can easily get something like the SanDisk and have the option to plug it directly in to the Mini and get transfer speeds around 800MB/s. I don’t use Logic, so I can’t validate the performance, but I would expect it to perform similarly.

      @@Leninzkis thanks so much for the reply really helped me out . As I’m writing this I just ordered the Samsung t7 and like you said most likely I would have to run it off a hub or something but at least it will
      Be fast enough to run final
      Cut and logic files . I can’t run it direct to the Mac mini because I am using one of the usb a slots for my audio interface . I will also still most likely get the satechi enclosure and use that for time machine to save desk space . I am running the 512 gb version m1 macmini and could have got more storage initially, but a few RUclipsrs said that final cut eventually willl just eat up that space! I guess external drive will be the only solution for now
