Again, another actor that as a child I loved watching. I used to enjoy his manner of being confused: reminds me of a primary schoolteacher I had who was Second World War veteran.
In the late 1980s I was visiting my then-boyfriend and his parents in Watlington, South Oxfordshire. My boyfriend's mum said that one of the local village churches was being used as a film location. She said one of the stars there was Michael Hordern and in-between long takes he was entertaining the local children with Paddington Bear stories. This has always made me smile as it shows what a lovely person he was.
Michael Horden was always a joy. Such a talented Actor. Horror, Drama, Comedy, Children's Programmes... He was a success in every genre. Thank you for this, much appreciated. Bloody-lovely.
What a lovely tribute 🥰 such a wonderful actor I always loved his tv ghost story whistle and il come to you M R James , and loving wind in the willows old badger 😎
Thank you so much for your lovely comment David! I adored Badger and Wind in the Willows! I didn’t see Whistle and I’ll come - I will look out for it though! Thank you so much for watching ❤❤❤
I have to agree that ‘Whistle and I’ll come to you..’ is one of my favourite pieces of television ever. Superb and still one of the most unnerving ghost/horror scenes I have seen.
What I love about these segments is that it contains faces from my generation who I would grow up seeing on tv and cinema and didn’t know nothing about them!!! I enjoy more
Lovely video! ‘Scullery” not a word you hear much these days when referring to a kitchens. What a lovely man, and a great actor…interesting life he had. R.l.P.
Michael was a marvellous actor, and nobody reads M. R. James' stories better. I would recommend his autobiography to anyone who wishes to know more about this charming chap. A brilliant video, as always. Thank you.
Thank you so much for your lovely comment Jacqueline! I love Michael’s autobiography - it was so interesting and witty too - I don’t know why but I wasn’t expecting the wonderful humour that comes across in it ❤ thank you for watching! 🥰
M R James stories are available on RUclips. They are superb audio recordings. There’s also a black and white film version of “Oh whistle and I’ll come to you my lad” starring Hordern brilliantly directed by Jonathan Miller in 1968.
"Go ahead broadsword this is Danny boy!... Do you have it? ...""Yes we have it, we have it all""... All sins forgiven" Admiral Rolland. Where eagles dare. A small part but so wonderfully done. Immortal. What a wonderful tribute
Magnificent actor with a very distinctive fruity kind of voice, which I imagine carried quite a distance on stage especially. I watched 'Passport to Pimlico' on the BBC iPlayer only last week. My personal favourite role of his was as a butler in the Ronnie Barker 'silent' comedy 'Futtocks End and he similarly excelled as Jeeves on BBC radio. Well done Shar on such a detailed biography. What a full and interesting life he led.
He was Michael!!! And yes I thought that about his voice on stage and I love the description ‘fruity’ Passport to Pimlico is such a classic! He did indeed live a jam-packed life! I have barely scratched the surface - so much more I would love to have included but the video would have become an epic 😂 I especially would have loved to talk about what he thought of Rex Harrison but I have ideas for another video 🤭 xx
I so enjoyed touring the Plymouth Gin Company with my parents and husband in 1993, and we could immediately recognize Sir Michael's wonderful voice as he narrated the history of that venerable company!
thank you so much for this,I liked every thing I saw with Michael Hordern in, but knew very little about him, this has really helped me find out much more about him and appreciate him even more.
I'm delighted to hear that you found the video helpful and informative! Michael Hordern was indeed a remarkable actor, and it's wonderful to know that you enjoyed his work so much. It's always fulfilling to shed light on the lives and careers of talented individuals like him. Thank you for your kind words and for taking the time to watch - it's very appreciated! xxxx
Michael Hordern - Triumph, Tragedy and a Fisherman's Tale! whistle and I'll come due to the incredulity of himself having to face the fact he's about to have a mental breakdown. his ham act as the fortune teller in a sideshow tent during the film: Medusa touch is odd. it's an odd film for odd people. a fav film of mine...what films do I need look out for wherein he had the lead role. he seems more a bit player than a megalomaniacal starlet...
I met him towards the end of his life at the watermill theatre in Newbury. even at that age he was a dreadful flirt. A wonderful, charming and witty man.
Ohhh!!!! 😂 was he? I can imagine - he had such a twinkle in his eye and he did admit to enjoying the company of women 🤭 ❤ I would have loved to have met him! ❤❤❤
Another great actor is gone.I have got to say you spend a whole lot of time looking into these people's lives. So I say a big thank you for your time and the beautiful flowers that you leave 🌺 I to loved Passport to pimilico , a great movie , once again thank you.
Thank you Eve! I completely agree - he was a truly great actor ❤ I do love researching the lives of people like Michael and it’s always such a pleasure to remember them and to say thank you for everything they gave us with flowers ❤ I’m so glad you enjoyed the video - I appreciate your comment and thank you for watching ❤️
One of Britain's finest character actors and a true gent in every respect. For me, he'll always be the narrator of the original Paddington series, which is why I prefer that version to the others. Hearing that languid, warm and gentle voice warms you like a bowl of hot soup. Thank you Mr Hordern for delighting and inspiring us Cheers ❤ 😀
I really enjoyed this bio of Sir Michael Horden. What a talent he was. That unmistakable voice. I wish I had been able to see him on stage. My favourite film he starred in is "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum". In 1995 Brighton College named a room after Sir Michael to commemorate the school's 150th anniversary.
Oh me too!!!! What I wouldn't of given to see Sir Michael Hordern on stage!!! I didn't know that Brighton College had named a room after him - thank you for the information and thank you for watching! xxx
Thank you for this wonderful tribute to a very special actor. My favourite Hordern part is King Lear directed by Jonathan Miller. It was commissioned by the BBC and remains the best King Lear I've ever seen and I have seen lots of them. I met Michael Hordern at a reading of poetry in Harrogate. He signed my copy of King Lear and we chatted for a while. He was friendly, accomodating and attentive. He shook my hand when we parted - and I was struck by how enormous his hands were. A giant in every respect. He was very special.
Thank you for sharing such a wonderful and personal story! Meeting Michael Hordern and having that memorable interaction must have been incredible. His portrayal of King Lear, especially in Jonathan Miller's adaptation, is indeed remarkable. What an honour to have your copy signed by such a giant of an actor, both in talent and presence! I have to say I would have absolutely loved to have been at the poetry reading! I have always had a passion for poetry and I truly appreciate you sharing this experience-he really was very special. 😊 xxxx
Thank you so much for your lovely comment! Michael Hordern was such a brilliant actor with a voice that once heard you can't forget! I feel in general he has been forgotten and that is such a terrible shame - I have always been a huge fan of his work - and The Missionary was superb! Thank you for watching! xxxx
Thank you so much for your lovely comment! I truly appreciat it and I'm so glad you enjoyed the video - thank you for watching! xxxx There is definitely more on the way! xxxx
I'm not sure why I had not subscribed before, having adored some of your other videos, but thank goodness the algorithm returned me to you! I'm in my mid 40s, but Sir Michael is a huge part of my childhood - I think he may have narrated the entire audiobook of Wind in the Willows I used to listen literally every night for years. Your research is so deep on your subjects and your affection for them so great it is like being a child again listening to that collective hug of a voice Sir Michael Horden had. What a tribute to the man you have given. And it is my luck that your obvious passion happens to overlap so many of my own favourites that, as a kid, my dad would say, "there's none better". He was right, and you do them proud.
Thank you so much for your lovely comment - it’s absolutely made my day! I am passionate about my subjects! I never cover anyone I’m not interested in, and I think that keeps me enthusiastic ❤️ Growing up, we just take in so much information and form opinions without even realising it until we’re older - people like Sir Michael weren’t just entertainers - they sparked interest and creativity and education, for example watching Paul Scofield play Sir Thomas More in a Man for all Seasons was part of the spark that set me off on the road to loving history and in particular the Tudors and watching Olivier (and Robert Lindsay actually!) in Hamlet brought Shakespeare to life for me which opened up the history of English literature. Also, they often jog our memories and emotions - recalling happy family and friends times - sometimes sad times too - but for me there is also the element of time travel which I love! Thank you so much for subscribing - it’s very appreciated! Xx
The Wind in the Willows always finds me recalling the mischievous Weasels’ referring to “Mister bleedin’ Badger” and the wonderful measured dressing down Michael Hordern delivered. Thank you Michael Hordern for your legacy.
Thank you for your comment! Michael Hordern’s vocal performance in The Wind in the Willows is indeed memorable, especially his remarkable delivery of that scene. His performance left a lasting impression and is a testament to his incredible talent. I’m glad you appreciate his work and the legacy he’s left behind. xxxx
A distant relative, I'm Australian, but lived for many years in London. I met Sir Michael, once, he was very old, but very charming & kind & knew exactly who I was... I can confirm that he did indeed love fishing. While happily married, most of his friends were gay. I thought that especially cool in the early 90s. Interestingly, Sir Michael looks like all the male Horderns in my family.
Thank you so much for your lovely comment Tracey! It’s very much appreciated and wonderful to hear your story - I think it’s cool too! I loved reading his autobiography so much - he had such a fascinating life! ❤️❤️❤️
Leslie Phillips, George Cole and Michael Hordern one after the other and I'm 'In like Flynn' from down under for a subscription. Now there's an idea...Errol Flynn, the very epitome of your channel's brand. I can remember being quite shocked as a young lad to read of Flynn's use of LSD in one of David Niven's brilliant pair of autobiographies. Robin Hood on acid ? Heaven forfend (but a jolly good excuse for you to visit LA.) With reference to this particular episode I would have cited Sir Michael's glorious cameo of a confused, senile butler in The Missionary. One of the reasons I love British film, tv and radio dramas so much are the infinite connections one can observe amongst the casts and how often the players of junior parts themselves grow to be masters of the craft. You only have to peruse the cast of the Missionary to spot such modern luminaries such as Tilly Vosburgh and Anton Lesser. Now, a delve into your back catalogue has offered up many goodies but Mary Millington has leapt out at me.....
Thank you for your thoughtful and engaging comment - it's made my day! Leslie Phillips, George Cole, and Michael Hordern are indeed iconic figures in British entertainment, each leaving an indelible mark on their respective fields. It's fascinating how British film, TV, and radio dramas offer a rich tapestry of connections among their casts, with many junior players evolving into masters of the craft. I'm thrilled to hear that you've enjoyed delving into the channel's back catalogue, Mary Millington was my first video - I hope I've improved since then 😅 I will be re-making some of my earlier videos so please do keep an eye on the channel! xxxxx thank you for watching!!!! xxxx
In the mid-70s I'd gone to Stratford upon Avon and saw him performing in The Tempest. For all the times I'd driven by Winterbourne, it was quite some time before I found out he had moved there and getting involved with local things.
How wonderful to have seen Michael Hordern perform in 'The Tempest' at Stratford upon Avon! I would have loved that! Winterbourne is absolutely beautiful - a lovely place xxxx
Hi . And thanks again for a beautiful and very respectful post...Sir Michael Horden ..in the early 80's I worked down the Kings Rd Chelsea in a grocery shop..(closing late)...many,many times he would come in..always a gentleman...and also a customer was the late great stephanie Lawrence (rip)...always came in late in the evening to buy her ciggies...and many time's I didn't close because I knew she was on her way..again...thanks again and keel up the GREAT work❤❤❤
Oh my goodness!!!! My friend was very close friends with Stephanie - they went everywhere together! She absolutely loved her and misses her to this day ❤ My dad grew up just off the Kings Road! All his family lived around there - I was born in Chelsea ❤
@Beautiful Bad and Bizarre hi again...sorry to intrude...in my last message I got the name of the shop I worked was wrong... it was the chelsea food faire (opposite the chelsea college/University.) ..between the world's end and the town hall)...have a lovely day and send the very best regards to your friend..what we share in common ❤️ ❤️
@@BeautifulBadandBizarreHello Shar again..I saw Stephanie Lawrence in the brilliant musical 🎶 “Blood Brothers.” Another talented performer who tragically died far too young...💐
I do like Micheal Hordern as an actor,he was in so many wonderful things, but I always liked his voice work like Paddington.Another great voice of these times was Richard Burton,he as the narrator on the War of The Worlds Album is fantastic.Another great Sunday tea-time bio thank you,all these are so memorable!! xxx
Thank you so much Ian! As for Richard Burton - YES!!!! His voice was magnificent - another extremely interesting character! Thank you for your kind words and for watching! ❤❤❤
As a matter of fact… YES 🤭 my only problem is that I’m such a technophobe - I am still trying to figure out how to get the audio right - but it is something I’d love to do in the not too distant future ❤️
Another great video. As an M.R. James fan, Michael Hordern drives me mad with his portrayal of "Parkins" in Jonathan Miller's Omnibus TV adaptation of James's "Oh whistle, and I'll come to you my lad." (1968) In my opinion, Michael Hordern was too old for the part, and his portrayal was of someone who was clearly "off their head" from the start, which it wasn't in James's original story. Plus the fact, MH is always eating as well. Gannet! (LOL) That said though, MH did many a M.R. James audiobook, and these are, in my opinion, the finest audiobook readings ever of James's work. Favourite film? Well, I share that one with you...the wonderful "Theatre Of Blood." WHAT A CAST in that film. ❤
Thank you for sharing your thoughts! It's always interesting to hear different perspectives. While Michael Hordern's portrayal of "Parkins" may not have resonated with everyone in the TV adaptation, it's fantastic that you appreciate his contributions to M.R. James audiobooks. And yes, "Theatre Of Blood" is truly a gem with its outstanding cast! Which of course includes Diana Dors so that always makes me extra happy 😊👏 ohhhhh! and thank you so much for watching the video I'm always grateful! xxxxx
Thank you dear Narrator for this most fascinating life story of the incredible actor. I always thought he was very subtle and with a dry wit in his acting. My favorite is when he played the vicar of a teacher who arrives straight from the first World Aar as a teacher and later head master. The series name I cannot remember. You are such delight dear Madame. Thank you very much.
Oh I loved him in the war films - Where Eagles Dare and I Was Monty’s Double!!! There was a Diana Dors connection there but I’m saving that one for something else 🤭 xxxx
Jack Hargreaves "Out of Town presenter" lived in the semi-detached house next to Michael in Bagnor. My Father's company renovated Michael's cottage and did ongoing maintenance work. I met him on many occasions along with Eve & Joanna. A truly lovely man, much missed.
Thank you so much for your comment - apologies for the delayed response! I would have absolutely loved to have met Michael Hordern! He always seemed so nice in interviews - and I love his autobiography! xxx
A man with a wonderful voice, so distinctive, which was made for narration. Of all his film roles, the one that immediately comes to mind, is the jealous father in the Spanish Gardener. Another wonderful actor who read stories on Jackanory . I never knew he was a good friend of Richard Burton. What a beautiful churchyard to end one's days, I'm guessing he choose that area for its chalkstreams. Thank you Shar.🌷
Oooh, saving to watch: Michael Hordern is one of my all time favourite actors. Saw him live in "Jumpers" back in the 70's, and loved his film roles, too.
He was at the Theatre Royal, Bath, acting as the waiter in Shaw's "You Never can Tell" only a year or two before he died. A wonderful actor. A privilege to have seen him on the stage.
Hi Leslie! He was a brilliant actor indeed - he had such presence and ability - I’d have loved to have seen him doing Shakespeare on stage with Richard Burton!!! Imagine that! In real life ❤❤❤❤
@Beautiful Bad and Bizarre wow yes also would have love to have seen Richard Burton and Peter O'toole in Becket some fantastic pics of those 2 at the Kings head church Square Shepperton John Gregsons pub as he lived a 1 maybe 2 min walk from there . In Creek house .also Burton with Liz Taylor at that time pics of Liz too.
Thank you so much for a very lovely video Michael was a very talented actor and a great voice on Paddington Bear I really enjoy your videos please keep them going ❤
Thank you Karl! I appreciate your comment so much - I’ve got some things going on at the moment which is delaying me uploading my next video but am hoping I’ll be able to get it out soon because it’s another amazing person that I completely adore! I agree wholeheartedly about Michael he was truly wonderful! ❤️
Hes brilliant in Scrooge, stops just about on the right side of Chewing The Scenery as Jacob Marley ghost, yet steals the " 51 percent " scene without saying a word. Fantastic, didnt realise he had Lancashire links too which again sends him up several more notches!!
Thank you so much for your comment! Apologies for the late response but I've taken some time off and am still on a catch up mission! I agree - Michael Hordern was such a talented and compelling actor! xxx
I must tell you that some of your videos make me cry at the end, especially when people are taken from us too early, like Jack Wild. It is always very touching when you leave flowers on the graves, you have a good heart. Do you sometimes cry when filming? In the Diana Dors video you look very emotional but you are keeping it together ...So I wondered. Thanks for the beautiful videos!
Hi Andrea - thank you so very much for your lovely comment ❤ to answer your question - I adore all the people I visit - I always enjoy taking flowers and it always feels very special but yes! I do get very emotional and I do often cry - sometimes I’m not expecting it and it really hits me! Jack Wilde being one of those moments - I always visit the grave before I film - and on that occasion the minute I saw his grave I completely lost it - I literally had to return to the car and pull myself together before I could go on! I always feel like it with Diana Dors too ❤ even though I visit her very often - she has such a special place in my heart ❤ thank you so much for watching the videos - I really appreciate ❤
@@BeautifulBadandBizarre I appreciate your honesty and compassion. You're not just telling a story, but connecting to the person. It speaks well of you.

I saw him once on stage when he was quite old but it was lovely to see him although he wasn't in it much , thanks Shar what a beautiful church and so quiet. I have just read your piece in Retro magazine about the wonderful Liz Frazer she did suffer a lot of health problems didn't she but was a trouper ❤
He was!!!! I loved him - and like you I have happy memories of Paddington! You were so lucky to see him in stage - even briefly! Thank you so much for reading the Liz article!!!! Yes she was! Such an inspiration - I adore her! ❤️

Yes I knew you meant his narration but I hadn’t heard him narrate Rod and Line although I have heard lots of other things he’d narrated and knew how brilliant he was! A great video on an actor very rarely praised. I am amazed yet again at how much research you do and I learnt a lot so thank you 😊 I watched The Medusa Touch last night one of my favourites and he played the palmistry chap .His part although small just shows his talent for reaction timing when he looks up, this scence is phenomenal . Thank you again for all your hard work and time making this video. ❤
My pleasure! Thank you so much for your kind words and lovely comment - it’s immensely appreciated!!!! I think Michael Hordern was a magnificent actor who could adapt to an incredible variety of roles! He definitely deserves more attention - I’ve not watched the Medusa Touch for a very long time - now you have reminded me I think it’s due for a re-watch! ❤️
@BeautifulBadandBizarre yes perhaps one of Richard Burtons finest roles in my humble opinion. I was a Surrey police officer and both Mr Horden and Frank Finley were two people I saw on a daily basis in Shepperton were they lived 😁x
Oh Richard Burton is another fascination of mine! What a superb actor - I’m a huge fan of Elizabeth Taylor too - so I’ve always been interested in their antics as a couple 🤭 Now Frank Finley I adore! I’ve taken flowers to his final resting place and very much want to make a video about his life - he is buried in the same cemetery as my friends dear father - so we are going to plan a trip together when she next visits her dad and grand parents x I would have loved to have seen them - did you ever see Diana Dors? Xx
@BeautifulBadandBizarre no unfortunately not I would love to have . Yes I became the local neighbour officer for Shepperton and would call on Mr Finley as he was quite elderly then I had many a cuppa at his home.I met Barbara Windsor many time though both once professionally and several times at Pinewood as a guest of the late great Peter Rogers she was adorable 😀 X
I'm sad that you didn't meet Diana but absolutely delighted to hear that you met Barbara Windsor! She was such an incredible personality on screen - and from what I've read - very kind and generous! I am sure Mr Finley had some amazing tales to tell - I can't put into words how much I'd have enjoyed chatting to him over a cuppa - you were very fortunate! xx
Thank you so much Shaun - I e immensely enjoyed remembering the life of Sir Michael Hordern! ❤️❤️❤️ Thank you as always for your lovely comment and for watching! ❤️
It's prompted me to get my Lovejoy collection out and watch him in the episode, " Fly The Flag". Wonderful stuff and thank you again Shar for your superb videos. X@@BeautifulBadandBizarre
Thank you so much for your lovely comment Andrew! I apologise for the late response - I took a few months off and I've been trying to catch up since! I very much appreciate you watching! xxxx
It is!!!! He was in so many films and television series etc I have no idea how he managed to fit in all his stage work too - I can’t imagine actors having that kind of schedule these days - I wonder if there is anyone who does? Thank you so much for your comment and for watching ❤
One of my favourite films again playing opposite Richard Burton was Where Eagles Dare. I've lost count of the times I've watch it, but I always remember the radio call sign. "Broadsword calling Danny Boy" weird how you remember the little bits, probably because I've watched it so many times. I really like your channel, the flowers you leave at the end of your narrative really finishes the subjects story off beautifully.
That is such a good film! I have seen it a few times but not recently - I think it’s time for a re-watch! Thank you so much for your lovely comment and for watching the video - it’s very appreciated ❤️
Another great British actor well remembered Dont ask me what it is was called but i remember Michael in a very outlndish program where at the end it was raining and was crawling about. Classic British absurd play or mini film. Thank you as always for your effotrts. X Someone will know what i am babbling on about. My memory is mot the best with film title's etc.
I’m trying to think which film it is! My memory is an issue too 🤭 thank goodness for post-it notes is all I can say! Lol Thank you so much for your comment and for watching the video! ❤️
Hello Shar👋 Sir Michael Hordern, for me, will always be the voice of “Paddington Bear.” I saw Sir Michael Hordern in the play: “You Never Can Tell” by George Bernard Shaw, at the Theatre Royal, Haymarket in London’s West End 🎭 Another interesting video📹💐
Morning Alison! To see Sir Michael Hordern on stage must have been amazing! I have to admit I’m completely envious - and in a George Bernard Shaw play! ❤❤❤ thank you so much for your lovely comment 🥰🥰🥰 I hope you are having a wonderful week xx the boys send their love 🐶🐶🐶
Always a treat and to use a very Michael Hordern word Splendid - he was superb in Pinter and haunted and haunting in Dr Millers (you should look at him...) "Oh Whistle and I'll come to thee...."
Great actor, I consider myself very lucky to have seen such a legend on stage in Trelawney of the Wells at the Yvonne Arnaud theatre in Guildford. It was probably only a few years before he died. Coincidentally my grandfather was born and raised in a house in Marine Parade, Brighton and then moved to Highgate in London. I wonder if their paths ever crossed 🤔
There you are! I was trying to find your channel as I hadn't got notifications I could not remember the name of your channel! lol! I have wrote it down now in case. I enjoyed this video thank you, just full to the top of this mans brilliant life and career. I must tell you Oldham Coliseum has now shut down! so sad 😐. Great work 👏👏👏👏
Thank you so much for your lovely comment Jules! I’m glad you found the channel again! I’m so sad to hear about Oldham Coliseum though! I have so many places I want to visit and that was on my list! Although I will still visit - I can at least see it from the outside! ❤❤❤
Ohhhh!!!! Please let me know if you manage to find it! I really love history and thoroughly enjoy a good historical film- an Anne of a Thousand Days is definitely one of my favourites! Xxx Thank you so much for your lovely comment! ❤❤❤
Another powerful, versatile British actor of the calibre we no longer produce. I had to look up the details of two parts he played towards the end of his life: In 1989 he appeared alongside John Mills in an adaptation of Kingsley Amis's Ending Up, a tale about a group of pensioners growing old together in a residential home. After that he took the part of Godfrey Colston in Memento Mori, a television film about a group of elderly friends succumbing to old age, which was adapted for television from the Muriel Spark novel of the same name. Two rather fitting roles I thought.
Hello Mark! Thank you so much for your comment - I always love hearing from you! I completely agree - Micheal Hordern’s generation of actors were so dedicated and hard working - the would strive for perfection and truly delivered it - although one story I left out (I hate making cuts but I could talk for England in the subject and the videos would be way too long 🤭) was the last night oh Michael in King John - his doctor had given him som ‘pep pills’ and told him to take one 6hrs before he needed energy - he had resisted taking any but at this time said he was virtually on his knees with exhaustion so he gave it a go - it was the last night and while ‘slapping on’ his makeup before the performance he also downed a couple of glasses of champagne - he said he thought he gave a particularly wonderful performance which he considered to be ‘the definitive performance of King John’ until… after the show he said Eve’s face was a picture - she was horrified and said ‘what we’re you doing? You were simply terrible - all over the place - what in earth was wrong with you? Michael was mortified and said it was a lesson learned! 🤭🤭🤭
@@BeautifulBadandBizarre I look forward to your uploads and sometimes try to guess who your next subject might be. As usual I was wrong again with this one. Michael Hordern was another actor who, because he enjoyed such longevity in his career, will evoke in people different memories dependent on one’s own age.
Some of us in the States do love Mr. Hordern’s acting. It’s fascinating to hear about his upbringing but I believe Hordern’s King Lear to be the best I’ve seen. I only became aware of him after he’d passed on, when I saw him play Marley’s ghost (“A Christmas Carol” (1951) as we call it here) the first time. I liked his delivery. He had such nuanced performances.
Hi again shar awesome video Michael used to make me laugh when ever I saw him on the telly to me as a boy had a comical face I just check up one of my favourite films was up Pompeii when a woman walk by they jump like they been touched but he's hands were up in the air or behind him lol I'm laughing now thinking about it never met him but Michael bond came to our school well the local library and we met him he told us about Michaels voice over the programme can't remember much I'm afraid but your programs brings my memory back to my child hood oh I used to live at Swiss cottage sorry for the long comment take care dear lady xx
Thank you so much for your lovely comment Martin! I loved Michael’s ‘lived in’ face! Mentioning Up Pompeii also reminds me of another lived in face that I absolutely adore - Frankie Howerd! I used to drive through Swiss Cottage regularly - I was often in Camden - in fact several years ago I did a photography course in Camden! Thank you so much for watching the video! Xx

That’s true! Language changes - sometimes without you noticing! Thank you so much for your comment and for watching - it’s very appreciated xx
We've also listened to him reading M R James stories and particularly enjoy watching him 😀 the M R James story 'O whistle and I'll come'.
M R James stories are available on RUclips. They are superb audio recordings. There’s also a black and white film version of “Oh whistle and I’ll come to you my lad” starring Hordern brilliantly directed by Jonathan Miller in 1968.
@@jonjames7328I have this film and it's amazingly atmospheric. It genuinely chills me.
The Bed-sitting Room with Spike Milligan…Bizarre & wonderful in equal measures!
A genius at his craft. Fantastic man. Rest in peace Sir Michael Hordern 🙏🙏🙏
I do agree! Thank you for watching xxxx
Excellent research as usual. Thank you for telling Michael Hordens story so well and for leaving the beautiful flowers on the grave.
Thank you so much Krystyn for your lovely comment and for watching! It’s greatly appreciated ❤❤❤
Gandalf in the BBC radio production of "The Lord of the Rings". Just perfect.
I agree! xxxx
"Go ahead broadsword this is Danny boy!... Do you have it? ...""Yes we have it, we have it all""... All sins forgiven" Admiral Rolland. Where eagles dare. A small part but so wonderfully done. Immortal. What a wonderful tribute
Such an interest life, the older stars 🌟 tend to have that don't they 😊
Absolutely gorgeous story. Michael is one of my all time favourite actors.
Thank you so much Josephine - I’m so pleased you enjoyed it - thank you for watching ❤❤❤
Thank you for your kind words and for taking the time to watch - it's very appreciated! xxxx
Wonderful tribute to Michael Hodern he did done so many films in the 1950's onwards.
Thank you so much - he was certainly a prolific actor - they worked so hard back then ! xxx
Watership Down and paddington.. love those 2. Great job.
Thank you so much Maggie ❤❤❤
Nice headstone and lovely flowers too and rest in peace Michael Hordern and his wife too!!
I didn't know that Brighton College had named a room after him - thank you for the information and thank you for watching! xxx
Yes. In the 1968 smash hit 'Where Eagles Dare' as Admiral Roland in the opening scenes 👏👏👏
😊 xxxx
Very well done Shar. I loved him in 'The Missionary' with Michael Palin. He was the dotty Butler and the narrator. An underrated film.

I truly appreciat it and I'm so glad you enjoyed the video - thank you for watching! xxxx There is definitely more on the way! xxxx
My fondest memory of Sir Michael is his wonderful performance as Gandalf in the BBC Radio adaptation of Lord of the Rings.
Yes! He was superb - I totally agree ❤
Xx
Unmentioned movies.
Up Pompeii . Michael's performance was Comedy Genius.
Absolutely!
I’m glad you appreciate his work and the legacy he’s left behind. xxxx
Thanks so much for posting
Thank you for watching!!!! xxxx
Brilliantly Done thanks learned so much about him so much information
Thank you so much Paul! I’m glad you enjoyed the video - thank you for watching - it is always very appreciated! ❤️❤️❤️
Best paddington Narrator 👍
Absolutely! He had such a rich voice ❤
He was my favorite Jeeves alongside Richard Briers on radio. Another wonderful tribute Shar, many thanks. XXX
Thank you Shaun - Michael was always a big favourite of mine - and I could listen to his voice anytime and just thoroughly enjoy it! xxxx
Heaven forfend (but a jolly good excuse for you to visit LA.)
With reference to this particular episode I would have cited Sir Michael's glorious cameo of a confused, senile butler in The Missionary.

@@BeautifulBadandBizarre You make some wonderful videos celebs I knew and loved from the best days, have you ever considered doing a podcast??
Which of course includes Diana Dors so that always makes me extra happy 😊👏 ohhhhh! and thank you so much for watching the video I'm always grateful! xxxxx
Absolutely love your videos. Great information about actors that I never knew much about. Thank you

Sink the Bismark, was one of his great film performances.
It’s such a good film I agree! ❤❤❤

What a fantastic actor all good films .thankyou so much for taking the time to make this video ❤
I agree wholeheartedly about Michael he was truly wonderful! ❤️
The Slipper and the Rose was a magical film as a child.

I’ve taken flowers to his final resting place and very much want to make a video about his life - he is buried in the same cemetery as my friends dear father - so we are going to plan a trip together when she next visits her dad and grand parents x
I would have loved to have seen them - did you ever see Diana Dors?
I am sure Mr Finley had some amazing tales to tell - I can't put into words how much I'd have enjoyed chatting to him over a cuppa - you were very fortunate! xx

His IMDb entry is loooooong (EG 4 movies and a tv episode in both 56 and 57). He was in so many things I'd quite forgotten he was in Up Pompeii.

This Spring has been crazy. Cold!
Michael Hordern was another actor who, because he enjoyed such longevity in his career, will evoke in people different memories dependent on one’s own age.
nice too see well done
Thank you ❤❤❤
"TOAD! Infuriatin' animal!"
Badger (Michael Hordern) in the fabulous Cosgrove-Hall stop motion animated Wind in the Willows.
Thank you so much for your lovely comment! He was such a superb actor with a voice that once heard you never forget! Xx

Xx
