I totally understand you’re point about the repetitive combat (I can barely make any progress in hyrule warriors without getting board), but oddly this game fixed this issue for me. I think the added persona skills made it a little more interesting compared to other warriors games at least. I would also like to mention that the story and music get better as you go on throughout the game. The beginning just kinda feels like a boring rehash of the original. But once you get out of Tokyo, they get a little more creative with the story and add a few more bangers. The story isn’t anything crazy, but I still think it’s alright.

    • @edwardsuou
      @edwardsuou 2 года назад +5

I think the problem so many people had with the story comes from their expectations to the game. It was falsely and still is described as a sequel to P5. From a sequel you expect a full follow up to every major thing to the previous game. That’s what a sequel is supposed to do.
The thing is this game is not a sequel, it’s just a spin off, extra story which happens a few months after P5.
You should never expect too much from such a modest product.
It wasn’t even developed by the same team and was mostly a collaboration with another software house.
If you look it this way everything makes far more sense. The story is almost entirely focused on new characters while many from P5 are barely mentioned and the main cast don’t have any major change and only gets some side arc and they all come back to the situation they were at the beginning.
(That’s why this game doesn’t even have to be fixed to be considered canon with Royal, it doesn’t really develop the characters from the main game, that’s what Royal does instead).

@@edwardsuou It's a narrative sequel, and carries the characters forward in time.
But as a TOTAL Sequel, it is not as such.
I look at it more like "Persona 5-1.5" or to reference another game series, Xenoblade Chronicles, this sort of would fit into the realm Future Connected does narratively (Not a full sequel, but pulls the status-quo a bit forward with the PT's being more recognized and able to go about theoretically more without the Japanese Goverement on their asses as much if they were to have another adventure).
Doesn't make it bad though, and also atlus themselves freaking advertised it as P52 in the japanese PV2 trailer with joker throwing a "Vol2" card, and also the end having the S of Scramble/Strikers giivng a 2 the boot in the logo at the end of the PV

@Alovon do you mind explaining how “the status quo was moved a bit forward”? Or how “characters are moved on”?
My answer is obviously nothing because no one in the strikers team even wanted to do that in the first place.
Third semester did both far more than strikers even dreamed of. That makes it painfully obvious what’s the difference between writing a story to evolve what you did before or just creating more extra content totally neglegible from. You can do whatever strange comparison to a 1.5 sequel but that just sounds like a lame excuse to anyone who knows the difference between a sequel and a side story: sure you can call a complex side story a “sequel 1.5” but that doesn’t mean it’s an actual kind of sequel.
A sequel is not something you can do half and half not (I’m just referring about the mere story and characters progression) you either do it or you do something else. If the story you wrote is relevant (you just have to immagine to remove it and see if something is missing, if you remove strikers or even if you don’t it all just comes down to Royal ending) and changes significantly the storyline than you can call it a sequel. However if it doesn’t and you call it a sequel anyway you just fool people who are used to watch, read and play true sequels, that’s what happened with strikers.
Also Japanese people don’t really care about what it could be considered a sequel or even canonic to them everything is canon if it’s under the copyright and everything released after the first game is a sequel. If you ask Atlus even P4 Arena vanilla is a sequel. (Maybe even P5 dancing and it would be hilarious).

      @@edwardsuou rant alert much?
Also this is a Japanese series by a Japanese franchise so if they treat it as cannon no real arguing there?
Either way, yeah it doesn't progress character development much forward, but the thing is I never said that, I said the status quo.
And by that I mean "The PTs doing anything would get them chased by the Japanese Govt" which was the state in both P5 and P5R's endings.
P5S does address that more or less and properly open up the idea the PTs could have further adventures which is a change in the status quo from P5/P5R's endings

I loved this game. Some story beats are even more resonant and well thought-out than the original. Especially Zenkichi, might be one of the best characters in Persona period. And pretty much EVERY single Phantom Thief gets to show so much more of themselves and their integration within the team's dynamics, especially Haru, and it helps them so, so much (except for Makoto who's even more of a grouchy mom in this one).
Sad to see so much dislike for one of my favourite games

I always respect and appreciate your opinion (and your killer video editing/comedic timing), and this video is no different. I've been talking with people recently about how much our expectations predetermine our enjoyment of a piece of media, and it surprisingly applies here. You saw this (and Arena for P4) as a bonafide sequel which would set the bar pretty dang high, while I went into it expecting a fun but shallow spin-off that luckily happened to expand on canon. If I had expected the gut punch that a mainline game's storyline delivers, boy would I have been bummed too lol but I totally get why you went into it with that mindset and I'm sorry it couldn't live up to the hype.

I'd say as far as Persona 4 Arena went, yes I went in with big expectations. It was my first time wth a Persona spin-off. I was let down. Then Persona Q, which was at least a turn-based JRPG. I had lots more fun with it, but it was still just an Etrian Odyssey re-skin. So my hopes were kinda low with this game, too, but the trailers made it look nice and the reviews were generally positive. So those got me a little more curious, a little more excited. Alas,

I honestly agree with the controls and story standpoint. I liked Zenkichi’s story line. Felt like a combo of the good side of Akechi mixed with a lot of Dojima. Sophia I found kind of boring same for most of the villains, but the game play, oh man the gameplay. I had just finished age of calamity and I had fallen in love with the warriors style game. So mixing the warriors style with persona worked so well for me. I think it’s just so satisfying and fun to mess around with and make teams to defeat certain hard enemies. I thought so in the first Jail, I just couldn't cope with long battles and stupid AI. But man, game becomes so much better after the first Jail. Characters development, new mechanics, UPGRADES (Yeah, all bosses after Alice are much easier because of upgrades), touching sub-story about Zenkichi and his daughter, and, finally, exciting story that (surprisingly) correlates with P5R. After a while, I like this game and recommend to just play through the first Jail to enjoy the other ones.

I think I wouldve been more interested in your opinion, particularly on the story if you had finished the game. Theres repetitive elements but once you get past the first jail and delve into the main premise of the road trip I think the story significantly picks up, and the new characters are genuinely wonderful. Going in as someone who had never played a warriors style game but also wasn't super attached on turn based combat, I had a fun if not particularly complex experience. Honestly my biggest problem was the returning characters mainly just feel like they're all post main arc and already the best version of themselves so there wasn't much growth among them, with the game just focusing on wholesome little interactions.

  • @BluSteel_
    @BluSteel_ Год назад +1

My big issue with this game is just how long it takes to kill the bigger guys. They just sit there charging up their attacks while you deal yours and hit you for big damage cause they don't flinch out of their charge or idle animation unless you hit them with their weakness. But in order to do that you need to use your sp which is extremely low for much health these guys have and the sp items don't give you enough back to make it worth it. You can cook food to have better sp restores but the materials needed are limited to like 2 or 3 purchases before you need to kill time at the Jails to restock them. The PT get combos that let them fire an elemental skill for free but most of the time you end up just missing cause you can't actually aim it and they deal laughably low damage as well as barely effect the stun bar on the bigger guys. I honestly prefer this game on easy mode cause enemies die a lot quicker. This is like the only Persona/Warriors game I've played that I didn't enjoy all that much.

Yeah, even ignoring the fact that P5 Strikers is a sequel to P5 Vanilla instead of Royal (which to me is a crime), gameplay wise, it just sucks, especially the ambush mechanics are just BS, like even though it seems you can ambush an enemy, the game won't let you, unless you're in cover, also for SOME reason, u can't ambush an enemy while hanging from a balloon, even when ur directly above them. And when enemy spots u, even when ur like literally 15m/50 ft away, they can still drag you to them and starts ambushing u, which is just total BS. I have actually briefly played P5 Strikers on PS+ subscription first, and then I got P5 Royal on my own, and boy I was hooked onto P5 Royal, and was completely disappointed by the experience P5 Strikers gave me, like even though I've already played P5 Royal twice (with 300 hours of gameplay), I'm still more willing to play P5R a 3rd time, than to play P5 Strikers again

P5S is sort of a weird case where they took the JRPG progression and tried to pair it up with a Musou game. And that's what made it very off putting because it feels so counterintuitive to the way I normally play these times of games.
It's trying to combine two genres that do not specifically pair up well

Man I'm tryna process what you're saying but I broke down at "it's not unusual" I think your script writing's really good and natural to listen to. Anyway, the video itself, man you are so right with the combat. Thing is, at the start I had made sure to practise and memorise a lot of character combos, since early game I could easily tell SP was always going to be an issue. And, even then! The bloated health bars...I totally get it.... That always seems to be a problem in many games I play, they don't make interesting combat mechanics so they increase the health bar to give a sense of difficulty. It works sometimes, because the bosses have phases or the game itself has interesting combat of the player or enemy so you won't get bored with the health, like the Khotun Khan or Shibusawa Keiji, but in P5S Alice's only phases are like, normal and bunny mode, and the gameplay might look cool but not really fun. I kept doing combos with Morgana for his Garu hoping to the gods he won't die while using up all his SP to heal the team. Man. Fight took me ages and was boring as hell, even if I enjoy dialogue. Every time I do team combos I couldn't help but think "man i wanna play FFXV instead" which is a little unfair but at the same time IF YA HANDED IT OVER TO ANOTHER COMPANY THAT SPECIALISES IN ACTION RPG/HACK & SLASH TO DO IT WHY AIN'T IT FUN?????
And the story. I've only played P5R and loved it, so I was hyped for P5S, even if it was w/o my fav character, but DAMN. I was expecting more insight onto Joker's life back home, but whatevs seeing the thieves do a party was kewl--and then the entire jails plot like "what???". Sure, I thought it was cool to get more insight on Haru's dealings with the whole CEO thing, but they just rehash things. The problem is there is no character growth, since that's what the original game did already, and the only characters that grow is Zenkichi's hurr durr cops are bad message and Sophia being able to go against her own master's orders to follow her being a companion code (ok cliche but kinda cool). Like the villains ok sure but who gives a shit (lol)
arghhh The only interesting part of the story for me was the whole Okinawa plot (not for girls in swimsuits. boys) because the concept of a deceased Jail ruler is actually something new and not a reused theme like every other palace ruler.
Yknow, now that I think of it, what makes sequels good is new stuff. Portal 2 expanded the hell outta the story, and so many new gameplay mechanics and interesting characters. P5S--Story, like you said, feels like an afterthought. Like a loose end, like "oh what if metaverse still there oh noes". Interesting characters: first adult party member, AI companion, which actually is a great part because while their development was cliche I do quite like them. Or maybe that's just because they LITERALLY HAVE MIKI SHIN'ICHIRO AND KUNO MISAKI. DAMN. But Persona games in general do specialise in characters, so that's good. Gameplay mechanics: As we all know, it's whatever--new at first time but gets repetitive. But, I can say I enjoyed going shopping a lot for consumables I will never end up using. Because cooking was an amazing mechanic one of my favourite parts was getting new recipes (trying to hold back from saying you should play FFXV but GODDAMN YOU REALLY SHOULD THEIR FOOD LOOKS GOOD TOO).
Anyway, my own takeaway is that, sure, I might like the characters (and cooking), but that doesn't excuse the meh storyline, like, if it's both a spin-off and sequel I think spin-off is more accurate in subjective terms because technically it does expand on the main story like a sequel but it isnt significant enough. But hey. Compared to other games, you could easily tell P5S was more than just a cashgrab and actually tried. It's easy to find faults, but time passes when you have fun, exactly why despite my gripes I still finished the game and replayed it (Disregard the Platinum Trophy for the sake of your own sanity, please). It ain't a P5D, that's for sure, the story is definitely more than that, and if you hunger for more PThieves shenanigans P5S is great for more of their hijinks and Ryuji saying the eff word. Za end

The game plays much more like an action RPG than a 1v100 style game (Which you are allowed not to enjoy regardless but it feels like you're judging it exclusively on the fact it has some Musou DNA). And many of your other complaints feel like issues you should also condemn the rest of the series for, or not condemn Strikers for. Needlessly long, repetitive chunk of cutscenes that slow the beginning down to a crawl and scare away newcomers? That's Persona 5 in a nutshell too. Complaining that the first dungeon is a castle AGAIN? Sounds like a complaint you could make against Persona 5 against P4 too (Not one I would make but it's just as substantive as complaining about it here). Then you judge the story on the basis of seeing just the first dungeon? I don't think that's fair at all. Look man, I think it's totally fine that you don't like this game. But it genuinely feels like you basically came to the conclusion "it's not really for me tbh" and then strung a bunch of weak points together to try to justify it as something more than that. I hope I didn't come across as too aggressive here, but I just really felt like this video was unfair to P5S, and I think that was to it's detriment.

By the way the title is a bit misleading, this is your opinion on strikers but the way you phrase the title you implies ways the game could have been better but you didn’t. You mostly just talked about what you disliked rather than provide points of improvement

Personally, I don't mind the change one bit. The more dynamic combat style is engaging for its own reasons while keeping some strategy aspects of the original p5. I think p5 mixes well with a muso style, because it's full of mechanics to use interchangably, which I can't say for some other games. Like, I fell in love with Zelda botw, but hyrule warriors was just boring to me.

Not going to lie, this is in my top 10 games of all time. This is going to sound like blasphemy but my least favorite part of the Persona series is that it's turn-based. Honestly, this game has the best Persona soundtrack and it's the most fun I've had while also having a story I was deeply interested in. I say that as a massive fan of this series.
Honestly, it might have my favorite game soundtrack in general.

That circle button to confirm thing really struck a cord with me.
I seriously think it should just be standard by now that games let you remap whatever buttons you want like in the Elder Scrolls and Fallout games. Recent Ubisoft games have been fairly decent at this.
But something about uses the "CANCEL" button to confirm things just really fucks with my brain.
I like the game more than you, and I really am enjoying it so far, but I have a lot of the same problems you do as someone who also doesn't really play muso games.
Certain things about the combat just feel... off.
Like since party members are AI controlled. Where is the option to tell them to conserve SP, or focus on healing? So annoying to switch to someone to exploit a weakness just to realize they are almost out of SP.
I do love that MC being killed isn't a game over anymore though. I've wanted that since I first played Persona 3.
Also I am so far pretty disappointed with fusions. It feels like we only have like a third of the options and Personas from Persona 5 fusions. Like it feels like they intended for you to keep certain personas a lot longer.
Also on the amount of dialogue. Like I realize it's a Persona game, and I realize it's technically a direct sequel and everything, but even having been forewarned about the amount of dialogue in the game I was STILL surprised by the amount of dialogue in the game. Like holy hell.
I've just started the 3rd jail and playing on Hard. And I am REALLY enjoying the challenge, but especially the first jail was just pure torture in some areas. I switched to Normal for Alice's boss fight because I just really wanted to move on with the story already, but switched back to Hard and now I feel like the game is becoming too easy. Maybe.
Also also, I LOVE that option to replay boss fights! Another thing I've wanted in the "base" Persona games, but I wish there was some way to replay them at the level you were at so it's still a challenge, but it is also nice to see how far you've come. Alice is a piece of cake now, even on Hard.
PS: I haven't played Persona 5 Royal yet.

Persona 5 strikers is great though.
    It isn't broken.
Persona 4 Arena's story was not that bad though.
The button layout is fine and is not bad.
The combat honestly makes me feel satisfied.
It is not really all brain dead button pressing, you gotta avoid enemy attacks and buff yourself and debuff the enemy and use your personas strategically.
It does not break the flow of combat too much, it still feels satisfying to use and pull off and you can expect to use them often.
It feels at least almost as smooth and rewarding as in base Persona 5.
Ture but again it is still satisfying to a degree and to use super effective skills on enemies and knock them down.
Regaining Sp was also a bitch in Persona 5 too early on especially in the Kamoshida Palace, at least here you can exit Jails and go back in within the same day to easily get SP and HP back.
The ai partners are not a problem so that does not make them worse.
They did not always waste SP or doing dumb things like not healing you.
They do not usually do dumb things in Persona 5 Strikers like not healing you or wasting SP either so this is not enough of a sequel in that sense.
Actually they usually move out of the way of big attacks and usually do not just stand, hang out, or ponder life a little bit.
The battle system is not off putting and neither is the plot.
They do not pretend to not who Kasumi is she just genuinely is not in this timeline as this is a sequel to Persona 5 not Persona 5 Royal.
It does not really end there as the whole game feels like a second adventure with the Phantom Thieves.
There is not too much talking here that feels like needless repetition of those games or at least for the most part there is not, it usually all feels natural even parts like explaining shadows as Sophia did not know what shadows were.
True Atlus wanted to cover all the bases here but that is fine.
It does appeal to people who want to get into Persona for the first time but picked up Strikers first so it does appeal to those people at least which Atlus intended, also warriors fans can at least skip cutscenes.
It is not presenting condensed parts of the story poorly at all so it is not steering warrior fans away from the Persona side.
Yeah my answer is no too.
The story of Strikers is not a thematically recycled mess.
Neither Persona 5 or Persona 5 Strikers is saying that all big influential people are bad.
Ok those are only three true similarities as while Alice abused people it was not actually sexual abuse it was only physical abuse although Kamoshida also physically abused people so I guess it is four similarities but as I explained Alice and Kamoshida are still different from one another and one is a Fashion designer and one is a gym teacher and athlete, also sure Sophia has no memory either like many other characters but her story and actual character arc is completely different and unique so it is fine, also the similarities in general are fine as they are just a couple early on in the game and they are not bad or anything and most of them except the one with Sophia are just meant to parallel Persona 5 and they do a good job at that, also Alice's dungeon is not just a jail it is all of Shibuya so yeah clearly even the similarities have differences.
It is not all repetitive. The battles are not all repetitive. The story tropes are mostly not repetitive. The base game music is especially not repetitive.
The pros really are not vastly surrounded by cons at all.
Strikers being a Persona 5 sequel was not a waste at all.

  • @Zeronigel332
    @Zeronigel332 2 года назад

This is too months later but I greatly disagree with you on the front that the story is recycled. For one while some boss are a reflection on a party member ideals and morals, said bosses do what a sequel game should do being challenged the player insight on if what they others are doing is fine. The second boss for example is one I love because he is only using those who try to use him, so he somewhat justified in taking advantage of others when others tried to do the same to him. Despite him being passionate no one took his work seriously and only saw the name. The way Yusuke handles him is the ultimate proof of his development from the original game and madarame. Each one challenge the phantom thieves in ways they haven’t been challenged truly thinking about how lucky their previous villains were so evil. Despite the oc amesia thing honestly Sophia is the best persona oc we have as she doesn’t feel pointlessly there like say kasumi who just there to waste dlc money for people who didn’t know you have her for a month.
Also wanted to add this but the beginning is rough because koei tecmo made the game very much like a smt but p4 and p5 are don’t have the resource management that most smt games have at the beginning, the game also ask you to learn it early off which is a bit too much at the beginning I agree but at the same time they give you plenty of tools for you to discover methods of combat while preserving sp. Anyway I’m sorry you dislike the game but I think if you approach from a different perspective you would like it more.

Just gonna say anyone who says dynasty warriors games is just brainless or button mashing doesn't know shit and watched or played on easy or way too hard for maybe 5 seconds of any title. musuo games subgenre changes game to game but it's pretty difficult when dived into its a game that focuses on strategy and missions in the field but have the option to grind which is a great option to have when cornered.

  • @horsyswillkill

i played this game for 2 hours, i was able too beat every single enemy just by mashing the square button over and over again (i played up untill the 1st boss). The characters felt super bland the dialogue was really repetetive and every single player prompt was basically all the exact same answer. The only moderate entertainment i got was when that dude told me too give emma shit and my characters name was named SucDaShi tOutMyAs, also the cat seemed pretty cool and had some genuine character. This is was my first persona i understand the characters have likely already been given development so watching them interact might be more enjoyable if you have that pretence. But without that its just watching a bunch of generic kids bicker about college for 20 minutes in the intro. I also cant stand these stupid prompts that have zero effect on anything relevant, if they had it so that youd only get prompts on relevant decisions it would actually feel impactful instead of just feeling like an even more bloated cutseen. I know the other games are probably a lot better but its hard for me too ever want too pick up another persona game with this as my first impression. Sorry if this comment was pretty botched im typing on my shity little phone so its hard too write something cohesivse.

Okay ngl, I'm kinda mixed on what's said in the video, but I guess that's just OPINIONS doing their thing again. Regardless, here are some things I wanna say.
    1. You don't need to use the mechanic where time stops to use your Persona abilities, since there's a way more efficient, less pace breaking and overall, maybe even obejctively better way of doing so that doesn't waste ANY SP at all. That being special combos. Certain strings allow you to use magic to either deal elemental damage or even heal yourself outside of combat as finishers with little to no time being wasted, as opposed to the other way I just mentioned. Properties and which moves you use depend on which Persona you have equipped, whether or not jumping, which character you're currently playing etc. etc. There's actually a decent bit of variety in that aspect. You said that the game is more or less brainless button mashing and I can totally buy that if you're playing on Normal but as someone who's going through the game on Hard, this shit is MANDATORY (and fun!) to master.
Definitely agree on the bloated health bars, though. I'm currently on the second arc and can safely say that Alice's boss fight was pure monotonous HELL because of that.
    2. I kinda dislike the crazy amount of cutscenes (or more specifically exposition where they constantly repeat the same shit over and over again) and repetitive music as well, but I don't really see how those are Strikers exclusive issues when when 5 Royal was equally, if not even more guilty of it. The latter might be a bit worse in this game's case due to the higher frequency of battles, but aside from that? Dunno, seems to be a problem with this series in general for me.
Can't say much about the story because I'm still very early on, though one thing I really like so far is how the Jail owners in this game more or less parallel the Phantom Thief's previous personal issues in the prior game and how their interactions with them show much they've grown as people. But I don't have a lot more to say aside from that JUST yet!

    • @voyan38
      @voyan38  2 года назад +3

actually the Alice boss fight is what made me turn down from normal to easy, because at that point I just kinda wanted to wrap up the arc and had already decided I shouldn't continue on. good lord, that one was a rager.
your second point I very much agree with, like with all my heart. not sure if you watched my video on Royal, but you don't have to because I think you get the gist. that said, Royal gets more of pass because it's an enhanced port and not a sequel, and can be played in-place of vanilla. so not everyone will go through vanilla to royal to strikers like we did, some people will just play royal.

  • @toastwn

the button inputs like circle being "confirm" is due to the fact that in japan, persona 5 royal was circle to confirm, so they just carried that over and didnt think to change it in the localization i would assume. however, idk didnt really care about the story, and didnt like the combat very much either so i just switched it to easy. once i did that i enjoyed it honestly lmao. i just had an excuse to continue the plot of these characters. i will admit once you get further in (SPOILERS) when you get the second new party member that whole segment and awakening is awesome, really enjoyed it. i would like to see an improved version of this game such as strikers royal but i guess that's not really possible with how royal ended.

  • @FAILEDSTANDINGSCHOOL

I can understand on the surface how some story and thematic elements are repeats of what’s been done before but I think it’s more about how it uses those elements. After having played Vanilla, Royal, & Strikers, I feel like overall, Strikers has a more cohesive and stronger execution of themes and interactions that Vanilla wanted to do but lost focus towards the end of the game. Strikers achieves this by consistently having the characters themselves and how they deal with the conflicts drive the narrative instead of Vanilla’s conflicts driving the narrative moreso than the characters themselves. Which makes for a more resonating and impactful story. Royal’s new themes and story beats have a different focus than what Vanilla and Strikers touch upon so I don’t feel as though it’s fair to compare those two.

Something that was not brought up with the villains of each Jail is that they're not flat out 100% bonafied evil. We get some of that with Haru thinking Okumura was a good person, and Sae as a character, but Strikers knocks it out of the park with the villains this time around. My favorite would be the swap for Shido being this obvious parody of Iron Man, who believes that establishing the jails will in fact bring justice, and that this was what the phantom thieves were doing in the last game.

personally I loved the game, the character interactions were nice, the overall plot was pretty good, and I like how the moarchs are comprised of the 7 deadly sins just like the original, just a different iteration, history repeating itself, and I also enjoyed the combat quite a bit, especially during bosses when there's only 1 character alive and I'm forced to work hard to dodge attacks, also you would do good to learn the attack strings, its usually just pressing square a certain amount of times then spamming triangle, try and learn what each string does for each character to start doing cool combos
