A milled AK reciever is made out of a single block of steel "carved" to shape, while an AKM has the necessary compnents riveted to a shaped pice of sheetmetal. The milled reciever is more rigid and heavy, while the stamped is cheaper and easier to manufacture.
The AK-47 was just a new version of the MP-44, Hugo Schmeisser the designer behind the MP-44 was working in the same factory where Kalshinokov was perfecting the AK-47 and he stayed there from 1946 to 1949, the very year that the AK47 went into service!
@csmybuttt its preferred for a few reasons. one which you already named, 1. its reliability, especially under harsh conditions and poor treatment. 2. its cheap cost. and 3. they can clean it very poorly and it will still fire. i think its been said that its the most cost effective rifle in the world, you definitely get more than what you pay for with this thing. i love mine
@CMLovejoy Yeah AK47s suck compared to an M16, but the new model AKMs are decent. the Czech's VZ58 - looks like an AK and shoots the 7.62, but is much mucher higher in quality. The thing with the AK system is that the ones built with the loose tolerances will be reliable but sacrifice accuracy. If you get a AKM or VZ58, the accuracy becomes much better. A Blackjack recoil buffer makes full auto more accurate. Using higher quality ammo than Wolf makes a difference too, but jacks up price.
what are you talking about the ak breaking, the ak rarly breaks it's because of that it gets the reputation of one of the most reliable guns in the world. The m16 might be more accurate than the ak but it is not nearly as reliable and powerful as the ak. If I got to chose which gun to use in a muddy environment I would definitely go with ak.

@csmybuttt If AK's were as hard to get your hands on as for example a HK416, bad guys wouldn't be using them.. That's actually what it boils down to, reliability and toughness is not something exclusive to the AK-series..
M16 is a better gun. Its effective at both long and short range. It has a higher rate of fire and a lot more accurate. Ak47's are really hard to build, M16 can be built with a few tools.
cheep+long lasting+cool+strong=the AK-47 expensive+has to be clean before you empty the mag+week+made my Mattel(the toy company (no really go look it up))=the M-16 thats why the AK-47 is used by the bad guy he wants to live.
haven't people learned not to judge things by the way they look? people dislike the ak-47 because it's "scary looking" thats the main reason its hated. seriously? like TheGoodGuy9292 said, dont blame the gun for the terror caused. Kalashnikov had said himself, that he is proud of the design of the gun but he is not proud that it is used by terrorists around the world.

AK-47 is a simble of the world guns, i dont think its the best one but kalashnikov and russians are the best for firearms, m16 is more accurate over 300m range, ak is more powerfull bigger caliber and is much more universal that m16 u can only use it in wide open plains witht he m16 to be better....G36's (all versions) are a better alternative to the M's
the ak is not the best weapons, they broke easyle on the dirty floor or umidified places, the bes gun to give to a army is the m16. the m 16 is more strenght and powerfull.
