- Even the greatest guitar players have to start somewhere. We've asked countless shredders what the first riff they ever learned was, and one answer came back more than any other.
In this video, you'll see artists like Slipknot's Jim Root, Steel Panther's Satchel, and Alter Bridge's Mark Tremonti and Myles Kennedy perform and discuss the riff that started it all for them.

Thank you, Kirk, for saying that everyone plays the song differently and showing everyone where the correct placement is and should be!
Damn, I had no idea Satchel was such a bad ass 😂😂
He's quite lively for an octogenerian
I'm a little younger. Mid 40s. Mine was the "Come as you Are" beginning melody. It's very easy to figure out, single strings. But very fun to pick.
My first riff was "Taking care of business" by BTO. I was 15 years old, wow how time flys.
My first riff was Last Train to Clarksville. I didn't even know how to properly tune a guitar, but I just kept going, figuring things out as I went along, until I got it right.
I think mine was Paranoid. Even now it is still almost always the first thing I play when I pick up a new guitar
Also, that lap steel version sounds awesome
I think Satchel and Kirk were the only two to play the riff in the right key.
My first riff I ever learned was actually a Queen song, The Hitman and in a sense, it is the litle brother of Smoke On The Water. However, Day Tripper by The Beatles was technically the first rock riff I learned to play.
Underrated song!
Daytripper was mine too
Day Tripper was my first riff I played too.
I'm 58 and I was in my first band at age 12, and I can vouch EVERYONE started out with Smoke on the water in my neighborhood. on the low E string.
It was either that or Iron Man also on the low E string (I'm assuming everyone else done the same thing).
YEP, that was the 2nd song I learned on the low E, HAHA@@MisterAutist
@@sixslinger9951 I'm far younger than you, but I did the same thing at 13. The tradition lives on.
“I woke up at 2 in the afternoon. Cause I don’t have a f’ing job, dude. I’m a heavy metal guy. And only people with jobs get up in the morning. Remember that sh*t.”
I love that. 😹
Everyone says that Smoke On The Water is 0-3-5. It is actually 5-3-5.
If you wanna play it like Richie Blackmore, it's E an A strings 10, A and D strings 8-10 etc.
The first riff that I learned back in the day was Hatebreed - Live For This 🤘
Mind boggling. All of these professional musicians and only 2 of them played the riff correctly.
A new drinking song…. Take a shot every time James Root says “and stuff like that”
Ritchie Blackmore Rules! 🥰🤪
It is amazing that in most cases, this is true. First riff I learned was on a beat up guitar I found in the trash that had 3 strings. I didn't know how to tune it but I learned "Smoke on the Water" on the low E string. Played it wrong but learned the intervals at least.
The first riff i ever learned was Back in Black, then came 0-3-5
“Only people with jobs get up in the morning” never a truer statement has been spoken my friend.
No true actually 🙄 get up for anything, and nothing wrong with being in bed long if you need it hmm and if your not ready yet
What a tool
Mine was TNT by AC/DC. Same concept as 0-3-5 actually just doing it on the E string. Then the Enter Sandman intro
When I was in my early teens was around when Enter Sandman came out so everyone was learning that song and learning to play guitar with that song.
Enter Sandman was my first.
My first riff was Dammit by Blink 182 pretty catchy and helped me mastering downstrokes
Mine too. Being young knowing the "He fucked her!" part and screaming it as loud as humanly possible lol.
satchels fucking amazing
First song I learned was the 2112 Overture and Temples of Syrinx.
Back in Black
The first song I taught myself was Black Sabbath "Black Sabbath" aka Devils Tritone.
This video should be titled smoke on the water is everyone's first riff
Satchel the GOAT
The first riff I have learned was Glycerin by Bush lol
first riff i ever TRIED to learn was teenagers by mcr. first riff i actually learn was i hate everything about you by tdg. i have been playing guitar since i was 9 in 2019. in jan 2023 i finally got lessons, and about a month ago i convinced my teacher to ACTUALLY teach me teenagers.
For being 78 years old Satchel looks not a day over 66
He looks like hes 35
It never ceases to amaze me how so many of these guys STILL play the riff wrong. They must be tone def!
Why are they all doing deep purple?
3:31 yeah, you can learn it in two seconds, except it was sooooo wrong xD
Guitar players having no notion of tempo, as usual.
Alternative title: Musicians play “Smoke On The Water” for 9 minutes.
peculiarly enough the first riff I learned was Wolf Totem by the HU, I only know now how to play it properly
Like the dude said I am 60 years old Smoke on the Water. It was new and so was I.
Mine was 'On The Run' by Malmsteen.
Ritchie Fuckin Blackmore 🔥🤘🔥
Hé is in his 60’s now? I dont believe it? (The steel panther dude)
Nah, he always exaggerates how old he his. He's actually 52.
My first riff was Seek and Destroy.
that was my first Metallica song to learn.
Imagine you wrote THAT riff?
My first one was cat schratch fever by Ted nugent and teachd to me by Mark Waker
Rumble - link Wray
Weird to think about because that’s the first riff I learned.
Reminded me of the whole Physical Graffiti album, but that’s just me.
I'm pretty sure the first riff I ever really learned was Everlong by The Foo Fighters
But can they play Smoke on the Water? Yes they can and do
Has yo be smoke on the water
everyone is just playing smoke on the water baby hit the next video
METALLICAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Stuff like that
I play a 1939 Epiphone lap steel
0-3-5
I see satchel, I instant click
It's amazing how many of these rock stars play it wrong.
about a girl - nirvana unplugged
Mine was Iron man and accidentally turned into smoke on the water 😮
You killed the Dio riff. It's amazing that everyone played DIO as a first. Okay, I'm looking for guitar lessons tomorrow tomorrow.
Bro what
@@bluesalamander5527They have to be trolling.
I can help you but you have to sell your soul to the Devil 😈 like Zeppelin, Sabbath & DP did. Today is your lucky day. You'll very soon be the greatest rock 🌟 star in the world. EVEN GREATER THAN DIO !!!
I must be the only one who learned the James bond riff first.
Blitzkrieg Bop is my first. Never learned smoke on the water. Lol
The older they get, the more Myles Kennedy looks like Kevin Bacon.
I’m glad that your video title is not click bait. But it does come off as well… How do I say it?
What sentences are similar to “Guitarists plays riffs every guitarist learns?”
How about “A vocalist sings,”
“A teacher teaches,”
“A zombie does zombie things,”
“A vampire doing Vampire things,”
“A person doing regular persons things.”
The list goes on. So the problem with the title is not that it’s click bait, but in a weird way it is since I clicked on this video thinking it was going to be funny. Where u r just being captain obvious on purpose as a comedic getup. But I’m guessing that wasn’t intentional, so I am not saying the title is click bait.
2nd viewer from nepal
Only one guy played it "correctly".
Lol my first riff was one step closer by linkin park
Ted Nugent liked it so much he made another song out of it
lol mine was probably iron man
sigma sigma male sigma Ritler
You mean the easiest
“The first riff everyone learns to play“. And yet, not a single one of these guys played it the right way. Don’t get butt hurt. Just stating my observation and the fact.
Smoke on the water should be banned from these videos. Everyone picks it
