Hello again, I have since made several of these and am now getting better at them. Everyone who sees them thinks they are amazing [and think I'm very clever so I don't disillusion them!!] so once again many thanks for the idea. Bets wishes, Alan.
Just goes to show that you can't please all of the people, all of the time. So when all's said and done, and let's face it, more is said than done, just please yourself!
It never ceases to amaze me the skill, igenuity and dedication shown by wood workers such as yourself around the world. In many cases their work is equal to the best painters and artist, and yet, they are not appreciated as much and prices bairly cover their labour. An excellent video. I enjoyed every minute of it. Cheers.
Great video, I used this technique and it worked perfect. I hot glued a 2x2x6 on the block to use as a handle at the band saw I also used a metal blade [ more teeth less marks to sand ] making an entire tree , need many leafs. Walnut stem zebra wood petal Thanks again
Fantastic. Thanks for the feedback and the addition of some really good modifications to my original method. A whole tree? I'll wish you luck on that. Please post some pictures, I'd love to see the finished article.
Wandering blades are usually caused by one of two things. The first could be that the blade guides need adjusting to make them closer fitting to the blade. But the second, and more likely cause, is that the blade is blunt. There's a really good video for sharpening bandsaw blades here: ruclips.net/video/_akVVJo3G0M/видео.html but they're not expensive to replace. Good luck.
GREAT vid-thank you. I'm trying to make some maple leaves to go under glass on some table tops I'm making, Don't have a band saw, so I'm using the table saw. 3rd try so far, but each one is getting a bit better. Am using poplar, but I actually think plywood might be better for my effect. In any event, Your vids a big help-thanks again
one idea...how about wire brushing the leaves before cutting them off the block, could bring a 'texture' effect to them before polishing, letting the grain 'pop'.
Hi, The mushrooms are made from banksia nuts with a hardwood stem. Just make sure you have plenty of extraction or a good dust mask when turning the banksia nuts. Good luck.
Enjoyed your video. Thank you, I'm going to try my hand at these little beauties. One question, the mushrooms on the the desk tidies, what are they made of? I find there swiss cheese appearance interesting, would like to work with that as well.
Good luck with making your own. The mushroom tops are made from banksia nuts which are Australian in origin, but readily available, I get mine at: www.stilesandbates.co.uk/product.php/section/6286/sn/BANKSIA_MST
Great video! Just a question, would you be able to cut the curvature of the leaf (the outline of a leaf) before "slicing" your block of wood to make many leaves that are similar? It would cut down on time of having to trace your pattern over and over. Thanks
Great question. You are right, if you have the equipment to cope with cutting a curve accurately through 2" (50mm) of hard, dense rosewood. Personally I don't and on that basis I think it's better to do them individually than incur the cost of a snapped bandsaw blade, or wreck the whole piece if the blade wanders. If you try it, please let me know how you get on. Thanks.
The music is called Summertime, composed and performed by a friend of mine who goes by the name Opyum. The track is available to download from ReverbNation.com. Just search for Opyum.
Very nice instructional video. Steps are clear and I can't wait to try this. But PLEASE stop trying to be creative with the colored text! Unless it's on a black background, it's very hard to read. And leave the text up on the screen a bit longer so people have a chance to read it. Can't read stylized text very fast and it's annoying to have to keep pausing and backing up video to read all the words. Thanks!
Thanks for the comments. The text colour is aimed at being clear on the varying background pictures. But I guess you can't please all the people all the time.
Yes. A simple type face, on longer, no color. This is a lovely project but the text flashing by in such an incomprehensible fashion was very distracting. Keep up the good work and thank you for sharing with us!
How? how can 42 people dislike this video??? do these people just look for video's that the vast majority of people clearly do like and then dislike it because their life is that crap? sort it out!
+hellsbaby127 Just goes to show that you can't please all of the people, all of the time. I've discovered that jealousy really is a green eyed monster. Mostly I don't post the endless criticisms of "I don't like the music", "the text is too fast", "don't show pictures, I want you to talk", but occasionally I get bored with it and just publish them. A lot of people want things explained in minute detail and I worry about their safety using machines if they can't fill in the blanks themselves. I think you would agree that it shows a very shallow intelligence sniping at other people, especially when those people haven't produced something better themselves. However, as you can see from the comment from Robin Sauls, some people just have nothing better to do than criticize and after all, those who can do, those that can't criticize. However, thanks for your positive comments.
ONE-slow the hell down with the instructions. I wish your would talk, I didn't come here for a MTV video. TWO-pick a readable color; for the instructions-can't read the writing due to it melding into the background.
+Robin Sauls Mmmm. ONE - use the pause button if you can't keep up. TWO - hit the mute button if you don't enjoy the music. THREE - read the other comments, it seems other viewers manage just fine. PS, don't bother replying with a rant, I won't approve it for publication. Have a nice day!
Means nothing to me, How much did you pay for the wood? Cost and effect, I live in the USA, how much in US Dollars did the wood cost, and where would I find the wood, . How much did you sell the leaves for? Profit margin? mopane,? & sonokeling rosewood really?
Really? Is this even a serious comment? If you can't be bothered to do a little bit of research for yourself, you should probably stay away from sharp tools and machines like bandsaws as the person standing behind you telling you when to breath might get hurt.
You just made a free video that has given hundreds of people inspiration. Now we don't have to experiment and spend countless hours trying to figure out how to make these ... but I did a thumbs down, because in your haste to make a free video, you didn't do the font in new times roman! And the color is not quite perfect! Please take more time making your videos, and less time doing brilliant woodworking.
Hello again,

Lol, I get sick of "critics". Keep up the good work!

I like it. It is an excellent representation of a "Leaf".For not talking at all, you said a lot.Thank you for sharing this with us. Happy Holidays!
These are really lovely items and will enhance many wood working projects. I'm certainly going too try and make some so many thanks,

I want to try this...as soon as I can get my bandsaw blade to go straight. Wandering bandsaw blades suck. Beautiful work.

nice work will try this but may make them thinner

+BusyBeeCompany Excellent idea. There are so many variations possible, the only limits are skill and imagination, thanks for the idea.
if u made them curved they wood be awesome as cabinet handles,
great work. What are those mushrooms caps made out of, their pretty cool too.
Mushroom caps are made from banksia nuts. They're quite easy to get hold of from any woodturning supplier or occasionally on ebay.
Love the Leaves how did you make the mushrooms on the desk tidy id like to make some of those !

Thanks ill give it a shot

Have you ever tried to inlay any of those little beauties. Great work!
The problem with inlaying them is that it just looks like marquetry, which I was keen to avoid. Thanks for commenting.
Thanks a lot, glad you like it
It occurs to me that if you were to make the 'stem' longer and dish the leaf, you could make *exquisite* spoons.
An excellent idea. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks, glad you like it
great video, great Leaf :-)
what is the name of the song?

Do you sell these? I could use 100 of them for my wedding.
Thank you
tq somuch
Very cool. I f you didn't cut the curve on each side i think you would have invented a new leaf. LOL.

+Ridgeway Woodcraft good for you, keep up the good work, and thanks for bothering to show the world.
Mushrooms...!! :D
I really need to stop watching and start working..
If only work didn't get in the way of the hobbies!!!
I love your videos but a personal appearance would be nice. From your photo you look a little bit like a cross between Lewis Collinsa and The Rock!!
