For the Incas, gold was a symbol of the sun, beauty, and the gift of the gods without material value. For the Spanish conquerors, however, gold meant only wealth - a historical misunderstanding that eventually led to the destruction of the vast Inca Empire.
With only 200 troops, Francisco Pizarro gained the most powerful empire in ancient America in 1532. At least 181 tonnes of gold and 16,800 tonnes of silver came to Europe via the Atlantic Ocean. Only a few original pieces survived, but the myth and fascination with the Incas' gold remained alive.
With very valuable loans from the Museo de Oro del Peru in Lima, the fascinating exhibition 1000 years INCA GOLD opens a window to the early civilizations of South American Andes. These objects are evidence of the sophisticated craftsmanship of the pre-Hispanic cultures of the Incas and their predecessors, the cultures of Chavin, Chimu, Wari, Moche, Nazca, and Lambayeque in the period from 400 BC to 1532 AD.
The highlight of the exhibition is about 90 artistically historically significant examples of original gold exhibits. The unique composition of cans, bowls, jewelry, impressive masks, and other massive gold objects shows the wealth of the Incas in an impressive way.
