GOAT in every sense of the term- his combination of speed, precision, power, athleticism, and creativity inside the ring quite literally made him the perfect boxer, making champions and other legends look like amateurs by comparison during his domination of this era in the light heavyweight division. Obviously even the greats succumb to age, but I can't help but wonder if he would've retired with an unblemished record had he not went up/down in weight class. Changes like that generally seem to wreak havoc on a fighter's stamina, but he was pushing himself to seek new challenges in the sport, a fact that makes his career that much more incredible. Why is Floyd Mayweather not the greatest boxer of all time?
Because he ducked anyone who had a prayer of beating him, never unified a title, never fought for a unified title and for his 50th win fought a guy who had never had an amateur or pro boxing match in his entire life, and it took Floyd 10 rounds to beat him. So he thinks he should be rated above Muhammad Ali who fought and beat Sonny Liston,Floyd Patterson, George Foreman, Joe Frazier, Ken Norton, Ron Lyle, Earnie Shavers, Joe Bugner, Jerry Quarry, Jimmy Young, and Leon Spinks? Or Sugar Ray Leonard who fought and beat Wilfred Benitiez, Roberto Duran, Thomas Hearns, Ayub Kalule, and Marvin Hagler? Or George Foreman who destroyed Norton and Frazier, lost to Ali, gave Evander Holyfield a helluva fight at age 42 and KO’d Michael Moorer to win the title again at age 45? Or Sugar Ray Robinson who won titles at welterweight and middleweight, nearly beat Joey Maxim for the light heavyweight title and fought such greats as Jake LaMotta, Rocky Graziano, Carmen Basilio, Gene Fullmer, and Randy Turpin? Or Joe Louis who held the title 12 years and had an incredible 25 title defenses? I could go on and on, but you get the point. Floyd is only legendary as a woman-beater.

As a kid growing up in Pensacola watching Roy fight was incredibly exciting. He finally got some respect from that d bag commentator when he beat James Toney. I was screaming and punching the air so hard during that fight I think I actually helped Roy win😂

@@goodvibrations6 This is like how Jon Jones is technically not undefeated despite knocking out the people he lost to. There was a disqualification there but after he had knocked out the guy and clearly won. The fact that he was destroying people in so many weight classes dozens of lb apart is really impressive.

@@iSOBigD yeah Jon officially has only 1 loss. And it was from DQ I think it was that illegal 12 to 6 elbow he did.

Hands down on of the best fighters ever. His technical skill, speed, defense and preparation combined to create in him a peerless boxer. He was the total package, dominating multiple weight classes- on top of all that he was entertaining and had real fan appeal. In my top three or four, and im sure many boxing fans would agree - I remember watching him knockout his opponent with a perfectly aimed sledgehammer to the body. Such skill

My introduction to roy jones jr was catching him on a random weekend when we got hbo or showtime for free on cable. He came out to redman and method man in the walkout with him. What an entrance and fight

Back when boxing wasn’t so money hungry and charging ridiculously expensive prices for PPV like nowadays, it was just purely entertainment more than it was business. Those days where purely good times, man.

Based on ability then no. He was great but he had a dead weight division and didn't fight the top competition. It reminds me of joe calzages era. Both great fighters but dead era of competition. In terms of ability there are other lighter fighters that were better. Roy would have trouble with fighters like pernall whitaker, aaron Pryor, sugar ray Leonard, thomas hearts, Marvin hagler. Even people like canelo now would cause issues for Roy

Roy is the most naturally gifted boxer I have ever seen, and the only thing that really beat him was time. His style was only doable with supreme reflexes. He was an extremely smart boxer, but he still could only pull off what he did with supernatural ability and reflexes. I do not think anyone in their prime from middleweight to light heavyweight could beat a prime Roy Jones Jr.
