GOAT in every sense of the term- his combination of speed, precision, power, athleticism, and creativity inside the ring quite literally made him the perfect boxer, making champions and other legends look like amateurs by comparison during his domination of this era in the light heavyweight division. Obviously even the greats succumb to age, but I can't help but wonder if he would've retired with an unblemished record had he not went up/down in weight class. Changes like that generally seem to wreak havoc on a fighter's stamina, but he was pushing himself to seek new challenges in the sport, a fact that makes his career that much more incredible. Always a privilege to watch, never a dull moment, one of if not the greatest, my personal favorite.
I saw Roy fight in his home town of Pensacola, FL in the 1980's, when he was just starting out. His charisma and presence in the ring was amazing. Even more was his movement and skill and power as a puncher.
Jones was underweight and looked very sluggish and flabby against Tarver! After this Jones Lost *THE EYE OF THE TIGER* he has previously, feeling of invincibility. And omnipotence . I truly think half his fall was psychological , the other half was that he was now *THIRTY F’ING FIVE* his prime was over, and I think Tarver really thought too much of himself and his victory ! Brother acted like he thought he would trounce Jones when He was in His Prime, even though he was fighting a shell of the former glory that was RJJ

Roy was one of the best punchers because everyone slept on his footwork. And people still don't recognize him for it. Like in this video for example. While everyone was watching his hands, his footwork was mesmerizing you like a cobra. He was always in the right position to strike. The hands can only do what the feet allow.

It seemed like he could switch up stances, angles, styles all within the same fight. He was truly unpredictable. Plus he had raw athleticism, (as evidenced by also being a good basketball player) so when he dodged away from punches it made it that much more exhilarating to watch. He was fast as hell at side stepping punches, and throwing counters. But my absolute favorite aspect of his fighting was his rapid fire combos. I could watch him unload those speedy combinations all day. In his prime I have him up there with Tyson and Ali. Those 3 are my favorite fighters ever. All praises for RJJ

Not quite sure why this guy is not rated MUCH higher than he has been as an all-time great. Blinding hand speed, one-punch knockout power and accuracy in both hands, world title holder in several weight classes. Had a weak chin though, and that led to his undoing, particularly as he got older and his reflexes started to slow down. At his prime this guy could fight with anybody.

Based on ability then no. He was great but he had a dead weight division and didn't fight the top competition. It reminds me of joe calzages era. Both great fighters but dead era of competition. In terms of ability there are other lighter fighters that were better. Roy would have trouble with fighters like pernall whitaker, aaron Pryor, sugar ray Leonard, thomas hearts, Marvin hagler. Jones had a lot of boxing mileage by the time he fought Tarver. Jones had hundred of fights in his life before then. Tarver started boxing later in life.
This dude was one of the best boxers I’ve ever seen. Unmatched skills!!!
Even with all his wins, talent and title belts he still seems underated. He's truly one of the top fighters of all time,to do what he's done is amazing. Seen him at the dog track in Pensacola one time,we spoke in passing but I figured he was there relaxing and didn't need any attention so I didn't do more than speak to him as we passed each other. My favorite fighter of all time tho,he was a true badass.
Probably bc he never fought enough great fighters.
TOTALLY.
ROY IS HELLA UNDERRATED AND UNDER APPRIEATED

GOAT in every sense of the term- his combination of speed, precision, power, athleticism, and creativity inside the ring quite literally made him the perfect boxer, making champions and other legends look like amateurs by comparison during his domination of this era in the light heavyweight division. Obviously even the greats succumb to age, but I can't help but wonder if he would've retired with an unblemished record had he not went up/down in weight class. Changes like that generally seem to wreak havoc on a fighter's stamina, but he was pushing himself to seek new challenges in the sport, a fact that makes his career that much more incredible. Always a privilege to watch, never a dull moment, one of if not the greatest, my personal favorite.
i watch Roy Jones highlights once or twice a year.. and every single time im just speechless... 😂😂
Roy is one of my favorite fighters ever! So unique and skilled. A beast in the ring
My favorite and in my opinion the best boxer to ever fight. He never dodged a fight, and he fought monsters!!!
Roy JJ was the full package, skill, speed, movement, power. I loved watching this man growing up. This was a great period in boxing.
In his prime, he was the best fighter I've seen.
Man that is one of the greatest videos of Roy Jones Jr. in RUclips! I think we all know how good Roy was, but this video shows us what a freaking animal he really was! The guy had it all. Why is Floyd Mayweather not the greatest boxer of all time?
Because he ducked anyone who had a prayer of beating him, never unified a title, never fought for a unified title and for his 50th win fought a guy who had never had an amateur or pro boxing match in his entire life, and it took Floyd 10 rounds to beat him. So he thinks he should be rated above Muhammad Ali who fought and beat Sonny Liston,Floyd Patterson, George Foreman, Joe Frazier, Ken Norton, Ron Lyle, Earnie Shavers, Joe Bugner, Jerry Quarry, Jimmy Young, and Leon Spinks? Or Sugar Ray Leonard who fought and beat Wilfred Benitiez, Roberto Duran, Thomas Hearns, Ayub Kalule, and Marvin Hagler? Or George Foreman who destroyed Norton and Frazier, lost to Ali, gave Evander Holyfield a helluva fight at age 42 and KO’d Michael Moorer to win the title again at age 45? Or Sugar Ray Robinson who won titles at welterweight and middleweight, nearly beat Joey Maxim for the light heavyweight title and fought such greats as Jake LaMotta, Rocky Graziano, Carmen Basilio, Gene Fullmer, and Randy Turpin? Or Joe Louis who held the title 12 years and had an incredible 25 title defenses? I could go on and on, but you get the point. Floyd is only legendary as a woman-beater.

It seemed like he could switch up stances, angles, styles all within the same fight. He was truly unpredictable.

Even people like canelo now would cause issues for Roy
RJJ is pinnacle of boxing. It couldn't last long, but his peak was the most boxing could give us
I dunno it lasted quite a while. From the late 80's to the mid 00's. The man wasn't beaten until he was 35 years old. That's pretty good.
Roy is the most naturally gifted boxer I have ever seen, and the only thing that really beat him was time. His style was only doable with supreme reflexes.
