to activate the key you need to go into the room with books on the 1st floor and jump onto the shelf where the books with the key are, the light will flash and a note with pipes will appear (I forgot what this thing is called) if you jump again into the same place with the key you will get into it the lightning and light in the castle will go out and the contents in the note will change slightly and a candle will appear next to the note

I found a new secret, at the waterfall by Madison lake, if you go to the end of the little passage there is a secret room to your left.
