A lot of people are very intimidated by this surgery but a lot of footballers can actually come back from it just fine. Livramento and Wirtz both had ACL reconstructions and are absolutely flying.
Also, you don't necessarily need to harvest from the patella - you can use the quadriceps tendon or hamstring tendon. The tendons (unlikely the ligament) actually do grow back.

I met with an accident in August 2023
    Got an MRI
Reports said I had torn ACL, meniscus and some more.
Doctors said to get an operation.
    Did physiotherapy for a month.
Was able (still able) to walk without any pain and do normal activities.
Got another MRI in May 2024.
Healed everything except for the ACL.
Don't know should I be happy or sad. Got this at a young age of 17 and I feel like I am not able to keep up with the people around my age like run, jump etc. I know I can run/jump but there is a fear at the back of my mind.
I feel my knee is stable but I just don't know what to do.
My friends had surgery and they say they feel pain which I don't.
I really don't know what to do.

    • @healthdecide
      @healthdecide  Месяц назад

Surgical treatment is usually recommended for combined injuries (ACL tears that occur along with other injuries in the knee). However, deciding against surgery is reasonable for certain patients.
Nonsurgical management of isolated ACL tears is likely to be successful or may be recommended in patients:
With partial tears and no instability symptoms
With complete tears who don't experience symptoms of knee instability during low-demand sports and are willing to give up high-demand sports
Who do light manual work or live sedentary (inactive) lifestyles
There is increasing evidence that children with ACL tears are at high risk for future damage to the meniscus or cartilage with nonsurgical management.

Conservative return to sport is usually advised after 9 months of healing. Some accelerated approaches aim for six months but several factors must be considered including: objective examination data, a return-to-sport or functional testing battery, biological tissue healing, psychological readiness, demands of the sport, and patient-specific factors such as concomitant injuries and comorbidities.

No that’s why you get surgery

@@user-iy9ve8zq8k IDK, sometimes surgery adds a lot of trauma and just makes things worse. I would rest and support the knee with a brace and let things heal.

a fully torn acl cannot repair itself or reconnect itself. if it was not a complete tear, maybe. but yes, some people decide to not go with an acl reconstruction surgery and do intensive physical therapy (again, this won’t heal the acl, but will ensure your muscles are strong enough to support your knee despite the lack of an acl) - i am sure pros and cons with both options and depends on your lifestyle what you will go with

It doesn't heal itself. Your other ligaments will compensate for the lack of ACL but you'll just be putting stress elsewhere, and it can cause other long term damages.

@@nonav.968 I found this video and there are more videos that claim yes the ACL can heal without surgery. The bigger the tear the longer it takes. Looks like say athletes who are wanting a quick fix will opt for surgery because who know how long healing takes. Otherwise I agree -- a knee injury can affect the rest of the muscles in the body. I injured some ligament in my knee and could not bear any weight for 3 days. Two weeks later am back to walking 2 miles almost every day - The knee still hurts but not more so after walking. Yep, all my other muscles are sore.

We really recommend getting imaging and a proper diagnosis. Locking sensation and swelling could indicate something like a bucket handle meniscus tear, but an orthopedic doctor would need to examine your individual knee.
