I ordered the RG556 on a Black Friday sale. I've seen so many good reviews for it including yours. I used to be a computer tech back in the day so I'm pretty tech savvy. Although I appreciate the RG556 coming completely set up out of the box. I purchased the 256gb version. Although I do have a bunch of ROMs on a hard drive that I used to use with the computer. I guess I could add whatever is missing when I receive it. Thanks for a great video and I just subscribed.
Love the 556 it’s comfortable and great for streaming. Performance is so close specs aside. My RP4 Pro hasn’t been touched other than to move it in over a month
I have 556. It’s great love OLED the blacks are amazing. I haven’t noticed issues with the control sticks. I play mainly GameCube games on it and the controls feel better to me then the GameCube controller.
this is exactly the reason why after a careful choice, I preferred the RG556 to the RP4Pro, ergonomics, screen and also a lower price. Having also found a very tempting offer, I also took the RG Cube for the same reasons. I already have the Steam Deck which I love and can do everything with, but I wanted a display upgrade and greater portability. However, I think that Retroid needs to update its flagship model at this point. I think this is the most objective comparison I've seen. The RP4Pro however is still in my thoughts and maybe one day...
I was loving my Retroid Pocket 3+ but after letting it go without charge for a few weeks it now wont turn on and is stuck in a Boot Loop and wont charge. Still trying to fix it but i was hesitant looking at the RP4. I decided no messing around and got the Ayn Odin 2 Pro.
Damn good review mam! You make the comparison so clearly and the review is packed full of relevant details for people to make an informed decision. "I award you all the points and may God bless you!" SUBSCRIBED
I already had the Retroid pocket 2s and the Odin 2 Pro. If I didn't have either the 556 may have been tempting. But I wanted something a little bigger than the 2s but more powerful and smaller than the Odin. So I went with the Retroid pocket 4 Pro. In my opinion their controls are superior to the 556. The only real thing that I like on the 556 that the 4 pro doesn't have is the screen. I agree about the ergonomics though. But for me if I'm playing just d pad centric games I find the Retroid to be comfortable. But as soon as you have to use the sticks a lot then the grips are basically required to make it comfortable.
As an older man (44) after years of gaming my hands go numb after a few minutes with any device I went w/rp4 pro because of its slim size . Great review .
medium take, the grips being seperate on the retroid is better imho since it gives you the option of being pocketable or ergonomic. also this is probably a hot take, but emulation is not a hobby for people who arent willing to tweak and install and download files in the first place. for people that want the most simple plug and play solutuions, they should probably stick to systems like the nintendo switch or other licensed handhelds pre-filled with games.
Cool to see that theres still some RP4 vids coming out. Seems like for alot of people there was a bunch of hype, and then they moved onto the next big thing/device.
Does the rp4 pro with its grip attached fit in the rg556 case? Do have any other cases you could try out? I really like my rp2s and I probably will buy the rp4 pro and the grip and I will find a case that fits.
I'm sure you could get a generic case or a case for something else that would fit both the device and the grip. I don't have a case for the 556 at the moment, but planning on getting one soon. So I will report back. 👍
I’m glad the Android build on the 556 is better than in the past, but we also have the hope of GammaSqueeze developed firmware in the future. Just ask Steve.
Oh for sure. I'm not saying it's perfect by any means but definitely less of an eye sore and more user friendly than they have had in the past. Yes, I would love to have the option of a CFW. So hopefully We get that eventually.
'm debating picking up a Retroid Pocket 4 Pro for something that's still pretty portable, not too expensive, but can still emulate most of everything I'd like to play. I have a Steamdeck OLED I put a 2TB drive in, but I tend to not want to travel with it just in case it got stolen since with the SDD, that's pretty much a $700+ device. So, I'm thinking about an RP 4 Pro for something that can still do a lot while not being too expensive, then maybe an RG35XX H for something cheap, easily pocketable and can play up to PS1 without an issue. I do however have a GPD XD I bought back around 2017 I think. Wondering if the RG35XX H is worthwhile/any better than that? To me I don't see the point of the RG556 or even Odin 2 if you already have a Steam Deck since they're starting to approach a bigger size, and in the case of the Odin 2, bigger price tag as well.
Problems for me with the RP4 Pro are: first the battery, it sucks. If you like putting the device on sleep you will literally have to charge it everyday. If you power it off completely, then it holds battery pretty well. Playing games however it drains so quickly, even when youre playing Gameboy or NeoGeo. Secondly, the triggers just dont feel good, theyre not horrible, but eh, ive had my trigger spring break, i got a replacement backplate, and it still feels iffy. Third, the ergonomics is just okay, it can start to hurt after 30 minutes of gaming, so i suggest the grip. Problem with the grip is once you put it on, you dont want to take it off, and the case doesnt fit it.
I heard a lot about the bad ergonomics on the rp4 pro, but how does it compare to the ps vita? I don't have any problems to play the vita for hours. Therefore I want to know, if it's the same or a similar experience on the rp4 pro without a grip.
Been messing around with emulation almost 2 years now off and on and im still a supernewb but im getting somewhere. I also love the cloud, have a switch (nlt savvy enough to mod that) and an ally. Really like the retroid 4 tho as my emulation hobby isnt going anywhere, i love game streaming, and that can go anywhere in my house or work. I also love android. Birthday or xmas for sure.
I've had an Ambernic RG353P for about 2 years now as my only retro handheld and am more than ready for an upgrade. Been leaning towards the RG556 but that slight performance difference keeps tempting me. I'd like to have decent performance or a large number of 3DS, PS2, and GC games.
@agentnickel8217 is there a compatibility or performance list for games out there? I don't have the patience to watch a bunch of performance videos but it would be cool to see that sort of thing at a glance
Great review of both. I just picked up a pocket 4 pro. And you mentioned the grip for the pocket 4 pro and why it came separately and doesn’t fit in the case and I’m pretty sure it was either a marketing thing to force you to buy one and they make more money or it was a complete afterthought so they made something cheap. It’s like iPhones not coming with chargers anymore. Edit: can you tell me what version of ps2 emulator you use? Half the people say aethersx2 3668 the other half say nethersx2 4248.
Yeah it's a marketing tactic for sure on the grip. Just would have been nice for it to fit in the case. For PS2 - on both devices, it's AetherSX2 v1.4-3064. I don't typically use Nethersx2 unless the device just doesn't run Aether.
I keep seeing videos with complaints about the screen size and the ergonomics of the rp4, it depends on your preferences. Personally, I like small devices that I can carry with me and the 556 is just too big, I don't really care about the ergonomics if I can carry the console with me. If I want to play more comfortably I use the series X or pc haha. the only thing the 556 has better is the screen in my opinion.
Exactly. That was honestly the whole point of this video. Both devices are good but it's just going to boil down to what someone wants in a device. Thanks for watching!
@@CellPhish I do not agree, you can find videos on internet about Luigi mansion 2 hd, showing it at full speed on RP4 pro as well as Nino Kuni ou Bayonetta (i think) and many others.
The RP4 is stronger, but its more down to the emulators holding it back. The 556 is only a small bit weaker, but again, the emulators are just not great.
The hardware on the retroid pocket 4 pro is a lot better on paper and I saw it plays better ps2 and gc games. Duh, it has a better processor. I really want to know were do you have your information from?
Retroid 4 pro with handles is really comfy. Like how compact and well build is. Also sticks are amazing, way better than the ones from de 556. Use to have the anbernic and sold it, lack of power and weak analog sticks. It is great but is not there yet!
Same for me I have an RP4 pro and I have no issue with comfort. Moreover 336g for the Anbernic vs 251g for the RP4. For long gaming sessions even 85g makes a diff
Excuse me young woman but the Retroid setup runs when first started and is a easy to setup as any bloody Android phone is. What's the challenge exactly? you're not crazy I LOVE setting up these devices. I went with the RP4P. more portable and that more power. it makes it run just better.
If you want a handheld that'll play Switch games, I recommend getting a Switch, which will run them nativity with zero problems.
Mod it and will also run android boot and play emulators.

I have the rp4pro and I absolutely love it. I do agree with you on the grip. If your going to play for more than a hour at a time the grip is a must
I went with the 556 simply because of the OLED screen. More manufactures need to release handhelds with OLED screens.
Agreed. Or....just make a "max" version with the option of OLED. It really does make a difference.
I wish they had done that with the Odin 2.
Actually i got the rp4 pro because it is way more pocketable then the rg556. And at home i use the grip. So it even get multifunctional at this point
That is a good point. If you're looking for a more pocket friendly device, the RP4 line is better in that regard for sure.
What game is being played at 6:50 ?
I believe that is Neo Contra - PS2
