What a stunning piece of architecture that cathedral is. I don't know the circumstances, but I hope you get to see your children too, Charles. It's unfair on the children to be denied a parent.
I remember it like it was yesterday, those poor girls. I have a young daughter, and I can't imagine what the parents went through. Still makes my blood boil thinking about the perpetrator, I would 100% support capital punishment for cases like this.
I lived nearby in the 90s and the cathedral was known as the isle of ely due to it being surrounded by water full of eels in medieval times. Time team made a great programme about the city 30 years ago . You might be disappointed if you visit on a sunday as all the shops are closed ! If you get the opportunity come to the south norfolk town of wymondham, pronounced windum, we have a great abbey and an old market square and also a combined police and fire hq just on the edge of town, definitely worth a visit.
My grandparents lived in the manor house and I'm privileged it was such a big part of my childhood. When my grandma died in 2011 they sold the house to a couple of interior designers, who apparently did a stunning job with it. Sadly one of them, Peter Leonard, recently died... On another note, I went to my cousin's 10th birthday party, a barn dance, where Holly and Jessica were both there. Weird having these connections to Soham.
I used to work in a canning factory in Soham, 1978 when I left school and lived in Bury, near Ramsey. A long mini van journey! I cannot forget the ethereal image of Ely catherdral in the distance; the ship of the fens.
Stunning Cathedral Charlie. If you Google Ely Cathedral, you'll find it's been in quite a few television programmes and documentaries. I remember watching this ghastly murder unfold. He should have been strung up and not imprisoned.
That is a wonderful Cathedral I would love to visit one day. I hope you get to see your children, they need their Father it is so important to keep contact.
I stayed in ely. Absolutely beautiful place. I went in cromwells house . That same night while asleep i was woken up by Cromwell and two of his mates stood at the end of the bed. I shat myself.
Yeah I know, how hard would it be to chuck in a couple of pounds considering he is using the Cathedral for views... I'm not even religious but totally understand how these places could millions to maintain.
One of my favourite cathedrals, founded I believe by St Etheldreda-long before the present cathedral was built. Loved it when I visited, I could hear the choir practising, from the local school I believe. Isle of Ely also connected with the story of Hereward The Wake.
Charlie their funerals took place at St Andrews Church in Soham it was a memorial service that took place in Ely cathedral in August 30th 2002 their funerals were held on consecutive days in Sept 2002
The Boeing Stratotanker has been over that way the last few days doing a sortie out in the wash. I also got chewed off by some girl when I was a young lad right where that cannon was. And I'm struggling with access to my daughter as well man. Hope you're ok.
They are out flying all over Britain's coastlines on training exercises, have been for months. I see a lot of them up this way, so I got myself the flightradar24 app to see what they are. A lot of Canadian, American, and Qatar Air forces flying in and out of Prestwick lately, too.
Great film Charlie, I remember this so well, it's incredible to me that the killer's already served more than half his minimum sentence. It is only a minimum though, whether he'll actually be released after 40 years is another question. I absolutely agree though that he should have has a 'whole life' sentence.
The Abbey was founded in 672 but the current building was built from 1083-1375 (varying sections over time). So yes, a minimum of 400 years older than Australia (Europeans settlers in 1788, not including Aboriginal dates) since it was finished, but over 1000 years if you go by the year it was founded. To think such an evil thing happened in such a scenic, idyllic village. Its outrageous that the monster who did this is still breathing and we are paying for him.
I just watched the Crime show About the girls it made me sick unbelievable the man Did what he did and his girlfriend lying for him Thanks for your video Canterbury UK
you got the pronounciation correct as Ely The cathedral is called the ship of the fens Until the Fens began to be drained from the 17th Century onwards, the little city of Ely was an island amid a vast watery landscape of rivers, peat beds and marshes. Atop the highest hill in the Fens - a mere 26 metres above sea level - is a magnificent cathedral that dominates the landscape.
I used to live in Soham. I left about 2 years before the murders, I didn't know any of the people involved, but go back and help with the search. The airbase was RAF Mildenhall. Coningsby is about 70 miles further north.
May Ian rot for his truly evil and barbaric crime, rip Holly and Jessica and my thought will always be with theme and there families, take care and be safe Charlie as always.
I saw that guys documentary about it disproving his conviction. He has a lot of haters, and that tells me there might be something in it. No smoke without fire.
I was 9 at the time & live in Suffolk near to Mildenhall which in itself isn’t far from Soham, it’s 30 min drive, I was terrified my friend slightly older than me was another factor that scared me I was blonde she was dark haired so it felt like a personal attack or like that could be us, I felt like ‘is there a murderer on the loose and will they find us to pick on’ kind of thoughts in my head, went to the Mildenhall stadium to watch banger racing after this happened (this was so close to the area closer than from where I live) & I was just on high alert the entire time. A few years later Dawn Walker was murdered only 5 mins away from my home. I didnt feel safe after that. Then the prostitue murders in Ipswich. I mean even Myra Hindley died in the same hospital I was born in this was just after the Soham murders. A busy 2000’s for horrible stuff, I wish the news was never on in my house as I could’ve done without added anxiety in childhood. There would’ve been them headline A board style things but that would’ve been it
the "news" was (and still is) designed to make tou feel that way (to this day) you will always feel this way, because that is the design. can you beat the design? yes! but its fkin hard. just know when you feel that feeling its by design feel anger instead its better for your head
With all the money you make from RUclips you could have paid the $10 entrance fee. Or made a donation. Typical of you though expecting special treatment.
Sad to say that many people regard the National Gallery (and so many places) as free entry, when they're actually donation-based. Quite dismaying that an adult with money could be spend time in such a place without even bunging in a fiver. (Not speaking of Charlie here)
Coningsby? I thought that was Lincolonshire? That's where you will find the Typoons, The big tankers Mildenhall airbase close to Lakenheath USA air bases.
What if an American fighter pilot stationed there, who was later arrested and charged with paedophilia back in America some years later was responsible for those murders and Ian was stitched up?
The yanks would protect him like they did with the woman who killed that kid with her car. Took years to get her near a court. If, and it's a big IF, Huntley didn't do it. He would be an old age pensioner before getting released. Serving a life sentence either way.
They don't make buildings like these anymore eh. When they weren't putting houses together as cheaply as possible. Not to mention the low ceiling energy saving guff.
Charlie - it was RAF Lakenheath where the bodies were discovered, which is an USAF Base, not RAF Coningsby!
