Love your layout and am really inspired by the way you stick at it to solve the many problems that crop up, well done, don't ever lose your Mojo! Re the Heljan turntable, i have had the same issue with 3 of these belonging to friends of mine. They all worked to start with but when, on each, the error 1 message appeared, thats when all the issues started. We contacted Heljan direct, no help. We tried cleaning contacts on bridge, we got advice to contact Gaugemaster who are Heljans UK distributors. They are aware of this error issue. We were told they sell aa new electronic board as an update but the guy we talked to didn't know much about it. Of the 3 turntables, all on DCC layouts, we only successfully got one to work manually and none of them to work on DCC addresses. As you said they appear well made but there are gremlins in the software and programming for DCC. I wish you all the best for the festive season. Cheers Steve Copley.
Hi Andy. So sorry to hear about the turntable. But I think that whole turntable area looks fantastic just hope you get the problem sorted. Well done with the helix I've always had full confidence in you with your talent. Thanks for a great video Andy. Have a great Christmas and new year buddy.🎄🎄🍾🍾 Thumbs up thumped 👍 .... Pete....
A weekly presentation that I look forward to, and would take this opportunity of saying thank you for sharing. Please accept my good wishes for Christmas and the New Year to both you and your family.
Shame about the turntable and hope you find a solution soon. Great to see a train running at last on the helix! Best wishes to you and your family for Christmas and the New Year. Thank you for the videos and discussions through 2024 and look forward to more in 2025!
That is a great, well-deserved triumph. It's heartening to see it go together so well. Merry Christmas, and I look forward to seeing further progress in the new year.
Love your videos, happy Christmas and new year! With the turntable (if you haven’t tried already) if you can manually turn it with the arrows hold one down to spin it around manually, as it passes 0 at the sensor it should then register positions again, if that doesn’t work try the calibrate setting in the menu (if it doesn’t work first time try again, can sometimes take a couple of tries) last attempt is a factory reset from the menu and then reprogram positions again. If that doesn’t work might be an RMA. Can send you a digital copy of the manual if you have lost original. Also on power Heljan recommend 15v AC and 500ma for power so DCC bus might have too much oompf (as well as being DC) especially when shorting out - might be worth a separate power supply in the future. Sorry for the lengthy comment!
Great work on the helix, looking forward to seeing the video, once it's complete. Bummer about the turn table though, but if it helps you have company, I spent weeks building, painting and painstakingly weathering a peco turntable, fitted the peco turntable motor kit , it lasted less than 45 degrees of rotation...well ripped off, ended up buying a stepper motor from Temu and a controller from eBay! left it as a manual operation thing, oh hum, all the best with those Heljan gremlins! .Merry Christmas and a happy new year to you and yours!
My suspicion about what has made the turntable faulty is the short issue you mentioned. Whether that's affected the infrared beam/detector or if it's affected the electronics in the control unit is the question. I have heard of short protection devices for DCC layouts. Have you got that on yours? Anyway, have a great Christmas that is hopefully free of any railway modelling troubles, and I hope to see you again in the new year.
I think you’re right. I haven’t got any short protection - I have jus5 been watching Richard and New Junction and he has shared one that he has on his layout so I think it’s probably a wise investment! Have a great Christmas yourself and thanks for your continued support. All the best, Andy 👍
It's been great watching your progress with the layout. Thanks for sharing it with everyone. Merry Christmas and have a happy new year. I'm really looking forward to 2025.
Merry Christmas. Andy to you and yours. I genuinely do enjoy watching your videos, so thanks for the entertainment. The helix looks great. As for the turntable, I'm tempted to isolate mine from the bus wire. Just checked mine, and thankfully, it still works. Regards. Steve
Thanks very much Steve. Probably a sensible idea. I’ve just been catching up on New Junction and noticed that Richard has a short protection module on his layout. Might be worth considering. All the best to you and yours, take care, Andy 👍
Hobby trax might be able to help sort out your turn table. They are based in Scotland can find them on the net . They fixed my gaugemaster dcc controller.
I have been watching your helix build with great interest, they are impressive! Being new to your channel not to familiar with your layout but when your helix is up and running will you have to run some trains in reverse up or down it?
Under 1.7% is good. On the Heljan turntable, if you get another, maybe swap out the control panel first as it is most likely a short would affect that. Only issue I have had with mine was a copper contact under the bridge when I lifted it from Westfield III and moved it to IV. Your idea of swapping the rotary base junction makes sense if you end up there. 😊
Hi Fantastic work love your approach, I noticed you use the Z21 and I am at a similar stage to you on my layout build and have encountered some short issues also. If you are up for it I would love to pick up a call with you in January? Thanks Mark
Merry Christmas sorry to hear about the turntable I gave the one but it’s not been installed yet. All the best for Christmas and please don’t stop- producing the videos.
Well, it’s looking good. I must say I cringed when I saw that you had cut the boards into so many pieces, you must have had a Mechano set when you were younger. Take a well earned break now and enjoy the time with your family. A very merry Christmas. Bill.
Enjoyed your helix build and many thanks for sharing your journey, a very Merry Christmas to you and your family and all the best for 2025. Take care and stay safe regards Barry. 👍🎅🍻🎄☃🌰🚂
Just like to thank you for the videos throughout the year, always look forward to watching them on a Friday morning!! Wishing you and your family a very Merry Christmas and Prosperous New Year!!
Sorry to hear the turntable is giving you grief; like you I'm hoping you can just swap over the central electronic unit and save your scenic work. But on the other hand it looks (so far, fingers STILL crossed) like the helix is a winner and working as intended. I'd say that's a good one to end the year on! Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
A happy Christmas to you and your family. Honestly if it were me I would just stick some black tape over the error window for now and save my cash until there's no other option to replace the turn table. Best wishes . John.
Merry Christmas to you and yours. Thanks for a year of very enjoyable model railway content. I hope you find a solution to the turntable issue. All the best. Simon
You mentioned the turntable is powered from your DCC buss? Can you remove the power from the buss and temporarily power it from another power source just to see if you regain control? If you do, I would consider a second buss dedicated to the turntable.
You won't see IR LED light, can you get a n electronic camera to it? Phone? you'll see on the screen a bright light, try with your TV remote first for the effect.
Hi Andy. I have a similar problem with my Heljan turntable which I recently fitted. I programmed it and all worked very well. A week later it’s forgotten all the settings I programmed in and it won’t remember any settings when I try to reprogram it ,also it keeps coming up with the same error message as yours does although I can get rid of that by turning the power on and off. It still turns but won’t remember any settings so I guess I will just have to set it up by eye every time I use it!!! Bit annoying given how expensive they are! Anyway merry Christmas to you and yours Andy and I look forward to you resolving your tt issue as I’m sure you will do in the end. Regards Jim
I was watching a lathe restoration video the other day and the digital read out (DRO) was missing the power supply but it was 7 volt DC, the guy bought one but it was only 4500 m/a and made the display flash as it was under powered and it should have been at least 5000 Milli amps so the guy bought a 15000 m/a 7 volt power supply and he stopped it flashing and got it working. You may want to check you power supply volt and milli amps to see if it's correct to the spec to the turn table as it looks like you might have the same problem possibly.
You could power the turn table off a 12 volt car battery if it needs a 12 volt supply and if it doesn't work send it back, but if it does you know it your power supply.
Looking great and always enjoy watching your videos. All the best for 2025 🎉 en have a Merry Christmas. Grtz Eddie
Thanks very much. All the best to you also. Andy 👍

Great work on the helix. Million $ question, would you do it all again as I guess there was a lot of learnings doing this…..

That helix is a fantastic achievement. Thanks for sharing.
Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year
Thanks very much. All the best to you as well. Andy
Hi. Can you please tell me where you purchased your engine sheds from. Great videos. Keep up the good work
Thank you. I found the engine shed on eBay. ‘Triple Track Engine shed 380m Roof Vented & optional wide entrance OO Gauge’. Seller name jsets0. 👍

Thanks very much. The helix enters and exits via the same track to the branch line, so I’ve got a reversing loop module to install 👍
Thanks for all your videos. Have a lovely Christmas and all the best for the New Year.
Thank you. Have a great Christmas and New Year yourself., Andy

Ah right, never thought of that. Definitely worth a try. Thanks very much 👍
Very nice, merry Christmas.
Thank you. Merry Christmas to you 👍
scissor jack would work well lifting the helix.
That would have been a great help… if only I’d thought of it! Cheers, Andy
Season's Greetings!!!!!
And to you! 👍
Merry Christmas and happy new year.
Same to you! All the best, Andy
Merry Christmas
Same to you!
It'd deleted the one about their Advanced DCC Control board so I can't type its part number ?
No worries
You will nor be able to observe the infrared LED as it is not visible light. The moment you said Heljan the first thing I thought of was “Hell Jan”
Ah right, thanks. I’m not holding out much hope!
You won't see IR LED light, can you get a n electronic camera to it? Phone? you'll see on the screen a bright light, try with your TV remote first for the effect.

Have you checked all the terminations are tight
I’ll go over everything again but I have a feeling I’ve fried it! All the best, Andy

Infra red shows up better with a phone camera than with the naked eye.
Good to know, thank you 👍
Probably a stupid question but did the turntable work before you applied the scenery . Best Wishes for Christmas. Cheers Peter from downunder.
Yes, it’s been working fine. I do think I may have ‘fried’ it when the layout kept shorting! All the best to you Peter. Take care, Andy

My post keeps being deleted ?
Strange!
Try again Walthers sell the Heljan turntables under their own name
Oh right, I wasn’t aware. Thank you 👍
First 👍
