I know it’s fashionable to be vintage or whatever but I genuinely want to live in those hills making ‘shine, growing some herbs, no Internet, no electric, enough money to buy what you can’t grow or trade up to. It’s how my parents lived till they started a family.

I get that too & can only imagine how tough it would be. Its something you would have to be born into, not just jump into from being a city kid. I think the family time is the big thing & there are different levels, not all families are piss poor or do they live like the people of Mayberry. Did you live in appalachia ? I'd actually love to hear your story, not being sarcastic. I love that kind of stuff. Been down to eastern KY several times & Alabama and saw a lot of tough living. Glad you got a better life now

There is no glamour in being a caveman, that's why cavemen invented fire. I live in the hills with many people who have very little and live a hard life, not one of them would turn down a better house, car, tractor or what have you. I sit and talk with many of the old timers and it's just like listening popcorn, the hard times seem to always stay with you even when you're not in them.

@Dave Bryant, Wow, great story & Thanks for sharing. Yes, the decline of mining put the hurt on that part of the country and also agree that a lot of people would rather take the goverment hand outs then actually work. Unfortunately that is a systematic mind set they have since its all they've ever known. Oddly enough, its the same thing in the big cities with welfare. AL is one of the prettiest states I've ever seen. I did some construction in Vance when Mercedes was building a plant there.
      Enjoy life Dave

The government demonized him and made this sweet kind old man out to be something he wasn't just like our tiny local police officers did me . Ol popcorn gave me a different kind of hope ....the hope of hell it probably won't get any better but hell with them il just drive around the town lol thank you for helping keep his memories alive iv been watching and reading about popcorn for over 20 years now !!! @@bryangoldfield3861 I can appreciate your commentary...I'm not sure "Modern Civilization" provides the best quality of life. Look at all of the people wasting their existence staring at their "devices" all day - everyday...when the real world is out there...even with the extra work of the older times (say the 1930s ?) I think the quality of peoples relationships was allot better than now. Now it is all Selfie driven, instant gratification that drives everything...all glitz, no substance. I remember my folks and aunts and uncles sitting and talking for hours and hours...nobody has time for that now.

During communism in Poland my grandad Jerry bought his car in 1976, a Wartburg 353 DeLux. He was an electrician, a really good one. But that wasn't enough, he used to take that Wartburg and drive to Romania to buy things and sell in Poland with profit to make extra cash, long story short he was driving this car since he passed away from cancer in 2007, that's 31 years. That's why I understand Popcorn Sutton for driving this car for soo long, One Day I'll buy a Wartburg like you did that Ford and I will drive it forever. *R.I.P Good Man!*

Man committed suicide by CO from a car exhaust to avoid going to prison for making shine in the hills of TN. I thought that's what you were SUPPOSED to do if you lived in the hills of TN. And everyday....all I see are "wineries" being built on every corner. Taverns on every street. Booze at every mini mart. Beer sponsored sporting events. Praise and dignity for breweries in St. Louis. Bud. Coors. Miller. Jack Daniels. Vodka....blah blah blah. This guy makes mountain likker in the hills of TN and he gets sent to prison. Why? Tax dollars. Why didn't they just put him on a payment plan like everything else in the world? People avoid taxes all the time and get lawyers to settle on some amount. Why'd he get a prison sentence?

About a year or 2 after the show became popular, I found out a cousins farm was used for bootlegging back in the 20s before he owned it.
Gangsters came up from NYC on the weekends and poured concrete bunkers and had to fill them back in with dirt before they went back for the week.
Come back up, dig the dirt away and pour more concrete.
They made it big enough for two 10,000 gallon pots.
The underground bunkers were big enough for the process.
Being a sleepy little town , people noticed when 2 sugar trucks came thru town within a few hours of each other and the heat was on and they got busted by the feds eventually.
Dutch Shultz was the man behind it all.
Eventually Dutch got brazen and wanted to kill the feds involved but the bosses weren't interested in more fed heat so they ambushed Dutch and killed him.
About 10yrs ago someone got the idea to go legal and built a distillery there , but they went all high class and lost their shirt and sold it.
I hope the new owner gets it going again because the bottle in my freezer is getting mighty low.
Cool stuff , those were some wild times.

People like this is gone and they represented what America WAS. They were honest hard working people. No such a thing now and as popcorn said "u can hawl what few in a Volkswagen and it wont be crowded"

He was a true mountain man he didn’t feel the government had the right to tell a man what he could or couldn’t do I couldn’t agree more we aren’t children if we do things that aren’t good for us then it’s our mistake and the government can screw off !
