R.I.P. Popcorn Sutton. I know it’s fashionable to be vintage or whatever but I genuinely want to live in those hills making ‘shine, growing some herbs, no Internet, no electric, enough money to buy what you can’t grow or trade up to. It’s how my parents lived till they started a family.
I get that too & can only imagine how tough it would be. Its something you would have to be born into, not just jump into from being a city kid. I'd actually love to hear your story, not being sarcastic. I love that kind of stuff. Been down to eastern KY several times & Alabama and saw a lot of tough living. Glad you got a better life now
There is no glamour in being a caveman, that's why cavemen invented fire. I live in the hills with many people who have very little and live a hard life, not one of them would turn down a better house, car, tractor or what have you. I sit and talk with many of the old timers and it's just like listening popcorn, the hard times seem to always stay with you even when you're not in them.

About a year or 2 after the show became popular, I found out a cousins farm was used for bootlegging back in the 20s before he owned it. Gangsters came up from NYC on the weekends and poured concrete bunkers and had to fill them back in with dirt before they went back for the week. Come back up, dig the dirt away and pour more concrete. They made it big enough for two 10,000 gallon pots. The underground bunkers were big enough for the process. Being a sleepy little town , people noticed when 2 sugar trucks came thru town within a few hours of each other and the heat was on and they got busted by the feds eventually. Dutch Shultz was the man behind it all. Eventually Dutch got brazen and wanted to kill the feds involved but the bosses weren't interested in more fed heat so they ambushed Dutch and killed him. About 10yrs ago someone got the idea to go legal and built a distillery there , but they went all high class and lost their shirt and sold it.
