  • I sit down with activist and author Vani Hari who has single-handedly changed the food industry. How she got huge companies like Chick-fil-A and Kraft to remove toxic ingredients, taking on the beer industry, getting death threats, the difference between the US food industry and other countries, what her food philosophy is, and why she doesn't believe in moderation. Plus, how she recommends starting on this health journey.

I've never heard of her and her work! But it's so inspiring. We can hold big corporations and industries accountable, educate ourselves and make better choices that benefit ourselves, our environment... Everything. Great episode.

By doing your part that Also means VOTING for lawmakers who don’t work for big Pharma or big food corporations. Representatives who don’t take super PAC money and who hold these companies accountable by making them 1. pay taxes 2. be transparent about what ingredients are in their products.

When it comes to this topic it's so important to highlight the issues from multiple angles. Kristen should also interview Science Babe to get her take on the matter. There are so many people in our country who can't afford to eat like this and this talk can really make them feel terrible about their food consumption for both them and their families. We need a down the middle approach to strike a balance and address food inequity.

I have mixed feelings about this talk. As someone who recovered from severe anorexia that nearly killed me, a huge part of successful recovery was not demonizing any food, not obsessing over any ingredients and absolutely practicing moderation. I am thankful to be healthy enough to be able to listen to this without worrying about it triggering a relapse, but there were many, many years this would not have been possible.

Eventually I think she is an activist for transparency. She avoids many ingredients personally but I don’t think she is delusional to think she can change how anybody else eats. You still put in your body whatever you want and nothing can stop you.

I hear you. I never leave comments - but I felt compelled to respond and offer some perspective. We have parallel stories in regard to food, disordered eating, and the work that goes into living a recovered life today. It’s incredible to hear that you’ve been able to find relief in recovery from disordered eating.
That being said, I think that a distinction deserves to be made between demonizing food and understanding the industry of food in America. Admittedly, when a talk like this is highlighting the failures of the American governments oversight and implementation of ingredient transparency - It can be really scary. I know for myself I’ve had to battle my disordered thinking when receiving information like the one being shared in this podcast. I often have to ask myself what the message actually is versus what it means to me. This isn’t a podcast episode about food being bad. This is a podcast episode holding food corporations accountable to their consumers and identifying their motivations, which are often profit. I hope this helps!!

@@jaidengraysonthis was so well said, but to add, I think the original comment was trying to say, while being in a headspace of survival mode, and where the relationship to food is already so damaged, adding in the aspect of healthy vs not healthy (to such an in depth extent) might be overwhelming while trying to heal.

Why can’t I find one nut butter in the grocery store that does not contain the bad seed oils? How hard is it to just make a nut butter with the nuts and that’s it? Same thing with the almond milk. Whole Foods carries a tiny little container of just Pyure Milk with almonds and water in it but it cost nearly $10. The price of eating healthy is completely out of control and these grocery stores need to be held accountable for jacking up their prices!

    • @HH-gv8mx

You have to literally be a millionaire to eat like that. It is just far too expensive to clean and healthy . That’s why hopefully she will keep doing her part in holding these corporations accountable. For instance, the cranberry juice sold by Ocean spray does not need to have red dye in it. Will be hard to find any nut in the grocery stores that doesn’t contain the bad seed oils. You would think it would be cheaper to make a product with LESS INGREDIENTS and zero chemicals but those products are always wicked expensive and usually sold at specialty stores.

As someone h went bankrupt from paying big pharma for the medication (Remicade, Enbrel, Humira) to treat my auto immune disorder, eating clean and being healthy has been a mission of mine for decades. I could no longer afford the $30,000 a year out of pocket to pay for my infusions for Crohn’s disease and psoriatic arthritis so I had to find an alternative way to ease my pain symptoms.
I only ate pure and organic whole natural foods for years. But that also got to be very, very expensive and very very time-consuming. Even going out to restaurants is a big deal. I have a family member flying into town and only has two hours to meet for dinner tomorrow night and I have to find a restaurant close to the airport. I know that I’m gonna sit there and not want to eat what they are serving. And then I look like a huge pain in the ass because I don’t want to ingest bad oils, and processed food

I’m glad I live in the UK where we have stricter regulations regarding food additives and I’m always shocked by the amount of rubbish that is allowed to be put into American food. Don’t get me wrong, processed foods here aren’t perfect but a lot of stuff allowed in America is banned here.

@@HH-gv8mx Hello .... so I got home from work on a weds morning around 7:30 ( I work night shift).. I had a spoonful of peanut butter before I was going to start getting ready for bed... it felt like the peanut butter got caught in my esophagus and wasn't going down properly.. so I had some water, but still had that feeling in my esophagus... 10 mins go by and all of a sudden I felt really hot with fever and within another 10 minutes I started vomiting..that whole rest of the day it was constant vomiting and diarhea( sorry for being graphic) so I thought I had the 24 hr flu bug... next day same thing..I was only drinking water and had no appetite obviously..so the third day was when the pains in my lower abdomen were really bad( lots of gas too) I still thought it was just a bad stomach flu . I was taking pepto and gas x.. 4th day it was still so bad I had to get a ride to hospital..they put me on antibiotics for 3 days ( couldn't remove in cause it was too inflamed because I waited so long )..after 3 days I felt fine so they sent me hone .. the next day my stomach was sticking out like I was literally 7 months pregnant.. went back to emergency and was in there for another week on stronger antiobiotcs.. when I left I was ok and they scheduled me in to have it removed a couple months later.. got it again 3 days before I was supposed to have my sugery and they removed it right then... the only reason I mention that feeling of something being stuck in my esophagus was because that's was my sister's first symptom too. My advice is go right away.. don't wait like I did cause it was so enlarged and swollen that it was impacting my colon and they didn't know if they were going to have to remove other things as well as part of my colon..along with my appendix ..it took a while to recover and get my strength and energy back

You have to be careful not to lift anythi g or even open heavy doors cause that will make your stomach swell up again.. Please please please do not take her word as doctrine! She talks about MSG and processed foods, but she's NOT talking about portion sizes and/or portion control. She is NOT showing scientific evidence from multiple studies from around the world by actual nutritionists, hematologist, dietitians, and other drs.
99% of the US cannot afford a fully organic and/or clean diet. Many people live in food deserts where groceries are scarce and usually are heavily processed. Is it wrong? Yes! Should everyone have access to healthy, whole, and nutritional food? Yes!
Is that the country and/or world we live in? No!
