The hardest thing when painting in acrylics is keeping them from drying so fast when you need them to stay open and moist for sections of your painting, and honestly, this tip, the spray bottle and the Palette Garage are the things that make this possible. Enjoy the other tips. Barry
Thanks for the info. You’re an amazing artist and I’ve watched a few interviews/ features you did on RUclips ! I love your work and glad to ring any advice from you!
In 2006, travels to Great Britain and Europe served as inspiration for experimenting with mediums aside from watercolor. _As a result, he now almost exclusively paints with oils_. His pursuit of knowledge and inspiration continues to this day, taking him to some of the greatest museums and galleries in the world.
Depending on whether you want faster or slower drying, more or less dilution, varying amounts of liquid acrylic medium (gloss or matte) or if you want to retain more body, a heavier acrylic gel (& there are also slow-dry gels if you want a more oil-like blending experience but without sacrificing as much body as a liquid retarder might), would probably all probably do as nicely… But is there an advantage to diluting a titanium white this way, rather than just using zinc white? I guess maybe in the right balance you could get a white that’s still more opaque than zinc white, but still not as overwhelming in its tinting power as raw titanium white, so depending on exactly what you’re going for it might be good… And I suppose it’s always nice, anywhere where you can avoid having to buy one additional color. So I’ll give this a try (probably with a different medium rather than retarder because I don’t have any). But I do really like the control zinc mixing white gives you over exactly what tint you lighten a color to- I feel like I’d have to water titanium white down a LOT to get comparable precision control of value/tone to what I get automatically with zinc white. Which might be fine if it’s not too wasteful of medium, but I’ll see what works better for me.
Your comments are very valid and in line with my thoughts. Why have two whites when one will do. Zinc White and Titanium white in the brand of paint I use are both series 1 and are therefore the same price but the Titanium white is heavily pigmented and I feel I am getting more bang for my bucks. I do use an acrylic medium to thin out my mixing white if needed for feathering/blending/glazing but the main reason for the addition of super retarder is to keep my white (and therefore and tints) moist and "open" longer which speeds up my painting process and saves frustration and waste. With the addition of any other thickening or thinning medium, I still have the problem of the paint drying too fast.
Ivory black, Phthalo Blue, Ultramarine Blue, Quinacridone Magenta, Cadmium Red Light, Burnt Sienna, Lemon Yellow, Cadmium Yellow Deep, Yellow Ochre and Titanium White. I use an Earth, Warm and Cool of each of the primary colours so that is a total of nine colours plus white.
Thanks for the tip. Learning how to use acrylic instead of oil colors!

Barry looks a lot like a younger David Icke
