  • Here is a short video showing how the head was before it was rebuilt, some mid-rebuild shots, and the final part shows a few attempts at aligning the head.
In order to align the head, first, the three lower bolts that are holding the bell housing assembly onto the quill housing need to be loosened as well as the cap screws on the bearing cap on top of the bell housing. Next, slowly bring the machine up to about 2000 RPM. There will be some vibration, but if there is too much vibration, then the bolts might be too loose, in which case, re-tighten the bolts to a point where the vibrations are present but not too much. Once the machine has reached 2000 RPM, slowly tighten the three lower bolts and the cap screws. Try to tighten everything as uniformly as possible.
Getting the alignment right can take several attempts, so don't be discouraged if you don't get it right the first time!
Troubleshooting tips if you are experiencing noise:
    * Check the quill during this process. If the quill makes any noise when moving it up or down, then you are still not aligned.
    * If you push up on the speed indicator handle and the noise changes, then the hub gear located in the bull gear is worn and needs to be replaced.
