    It’s really ironic when MTG players claim FaB is too expensive. They have almost bi-weekly product releases that you need to buy premium versions of to get anything good. If you were to sample everything a company released then MTG would be the far more expensive of the two games to play and collect.

    • @pheano

      No one ever talks about the upkeep cost to keep up with fab. I think over time fab has been the cheapest game to keep up with I've ever played.

    • @ScuffGhost
      @ScuffGhost 3 месяца назад +2

      I mean my 6year old decks still run competitively against newer cards in both standard and EDH magic so not sure what you’re getting at. Most new releases are full of refreshed reprints too which helps. I haven’t played a ton of FaB. I like the way it plays better than MTG at the moment but it bothers me that decks get solved and just become locked out. In magic you have way more flexibility to make something work again but it seems like you have to buy a whole new deck list if yours falls out of meta in fab. Not to mention the answer to meta decks is to retire a hero meaning if I played them in competitive now I need to build a new deck

    • @piralos1329
      @piralos1329 3 месяца назад +3

      @@ScuffGhost The latter issue I've had with FaB in the past (Prism and Dromai specifically), but I think the dev team has gotten a lot better about it? When a hero hits living legend and retires from CC or blitz, legend story studios are normally pretty good about printing another hero in that class before too long? It's why Rosetta is bringing back earth and lightning runeblades, to give old briar players new homes for their favourite cards in CC!
      Also, the introduction and ongoing support of Living Legend (which serves as a kind of vintage for FaB) helps a lot with this! Even if your favourite hero or favourite cards don't have a place you can play them in CC due to legality reasons, you absolutely can in Living Legend!! (See Dromai, or old aura Prism, for example! Or Oldhim, if you prefer more controlling match ups!)
      Regarding something falling out of the meta, it can absolutely be rough, but I think there I'd draw more of a comparison to cEDH than modern or such? Both FaB and cEDH revolve around your hero/commander, and in both of them your deck can fall out of favour, and fall out hard!!! That said, it's still possible to play and do well with that deck! You're not necessarily going to be able to win a world championship or such, but at a local level especially, familiarity with a deck is HUGE in comparison to just playing the new hotness. Azalea went for ages without any real viability in competitive, but people would still bring and rep her! Same with Arakni now - yet there are still arakni players who have made it to the world stage, and even did so when the meta was arguably the most unfriendly to them (during Dromai's dominance!)
      tl;dr: If you like a hero, play that hero. If you want to be competitive with that hero, learn the match ups, learn the hero, and practice. If the hero is retired, you can play it in LL, and there'll likely be a replacement coming down the pipeline soon. If the hero is bad in the current meta, play them anyway - Storm is at it's best when no one expects storm, ya know? Some heroes are more resilient to meta changes, but honestly, just play what you like, learn the hero and deck, and you'll do well.

    • @pheano

      1) idk how you are playing 6 year old decks in standard, did they change how standard works?
      2) edh is not a competitive format, you can play whatever you want and just have fun it doesn't matter. not talking trash on edh just being real here. edh is the most played format out of any format of any tcg for me I fucking love edh. exactly because of its uncompetitive nature this allows players to get in at any investment level and have a good time
      3) while I agree things get solved quickly I wouldn't say it gets solved faster than mtg. Back when I took mtg seriously the metagame would be solved within a week sometimes because of the homogenization of data from mtgo
      4) your point on making something work is a thing in every tcg at different points in time. sometimes you can adapt to beat the best deck othertimes its play the new thing or you are a fool. mtg goes through this just as much as fab. I have at no point in my how ever many years it is now of playing fab have played the best deck and I have multiple premiere level tops. The deck that just won the pt a month ago was a rogue deck no one expected.
      5) hero retirement isn't a function of game balance its a tool to keep the meta from stagnating. its fab's version of standard rotation. while there are major problems with the LL system this is not one of them

      @@pheano sorry I meant to say modern but with the amount of reprints idk be shocked if you couldn’t build a standard deck with 6 year old cards.
      I get EDH isn’t competitive but what equivalent is there in fab for a non competitive but still popular format?
      Mtg doesn’t have the problem of you losing a whole deck of cards when one card gets moved on. I first messed with FAB a month before Iyslander hit living legend, being new to FaB I had no idea about the game and didn’t realise going into it that not just the hero BUT EVERY CARD IN THE DECK was about to become unusable. Magic doesn’t move on an entire deck from competitive causing every card to become useless and drop value

    FABs initial staples cost about $900 for a players set of everything(tunic, BoJ, cncs, estrikes and codex) then each individual deck save for a couple is less than $200. so deck 1 is crazy expensive, but deck 2 is significantly cheaper, deck 3 is very cheap, and it gets exponentially cheaper the more decks you make. Plus the most expensive minimum rarity FAB decks cost roughly the same as a mid-price magic modern deck, or top shelf pioneer deck and somewhere towards the top shelf of YGO decks but not absurdly more expensive than most decks. and dont even get me started on how much it costs to buy a cEDH magic deck in paper, or a legacy deck.
    bottom line is, if you want a game that you can pick up a tier 1 deck for $50, play pokemon. if you want a game where you can print off all of your cards to play with friends, play kitchen table commander. if you want a game where your cards will have good stable value and cross-compatibility between decks, play FAB

    @EmanuelBradeanu 3 месяца назад +7

    I love fab, but the game is stupid expensive. There was a video last year compared all major tcgs, and fab came up on no.1 as the most expensive.
    And that's not even the most problematic aspect - it seems that everyone is forgetting that Flesh and blood is now a full rotating format. I see comparison between fab and modern mtg, and while the prices might be close, there is one huge difference: if I buy a deck for modern, I can theoretically play it till the end of times. But in fab? I wonder if Zen will still be around by the end of the year.
    Asking people to put a ton of money into a deck is one thing, asking them to drop a ton of money into something that might last them a year, is crazy.

    • @pheano
      @pheano  3 месяца назад +3

      pretty sure in the video I made a comment about how LL functions like rotation
      all the cost of fab is in the staples, if your deck rotates you can still use those staples in other decks
      most deck cores without the staples is only like 100 or 200$

    • @GeeJayGames
      @GeeJayGames Месяц назад

      Is this a casual issue, like in MTG, I can play casually and therefore my cards last and can be used forever, whereas in FaB, I know lots of people who play at events, but no-one who plays casually, so this leads to loads more rotation - for most people. I still just play budget Rhinar, for fun though, not winning.

    • @donzaibanzai7746
      @donzaibanzai7746 17 дней назад

      Resurrecting this a bit haha.
      I think with LL becoming its own fleshed out format. That will fill the goals of having decks that can be played for a lifetime. Also, what Pheano said: Most of the deck cost can be shared between all the decks easily with the generic staples so with a deck leaving the format you can take most of your investment into another deck OR play your deck into the LL format.
      I feel like FAB may have the higher upfront cost but depending on the player, can be much cheaper to maintain a competitive deck from set to set.

  • @rimrick665

    Play sealed, boxes are really cheap right now. Net decking is sort of soulless and can be expensive. Friend groups casually playing on the living room floor is positive for any TCG.
    Fab/LSS need to keep supporting and expanding casual play as it maintains a base and cultivates more engaged players...

    • @pheano

      just play sealed isn't really an answer to someone that wants to take the next step after an armory deck though I do agree sealed can be fun. Shapeshifter sealed is one of my favorite things to do.
      uh just don't net deck then? I think fab is actually the worst game to net deck in fwiw. You don't understand the reasoning behind any of the cards that person put in their list and their game plans behind them. its not like other games where its obvious what cards are used for.

    New players can go a long way before needing to spend a ton of money. Ira deck, then 1st strike, then blitz deck, than armory deck. Then you have sealed and draft. Plus most stores allow newer players to proxy the big cards if they are just getting started. We play UPF at our store occasionally. Players only need to buy a playset of cnc after they’ve decided they want to go all in

    • @pheano

      I fully endorse proxying and tell every new player at our locals to do that and even bring extra decks for them to borrow to try the game. But thats not something that LSS isn't going to endorse or promote. Also all of those products but the armory deck are basically useless products. Ira deck literally can't be played in any format, blitz decks are trash, 1st strike decks are trash. These are all great products for introducing someone to the game, but the entire point of the video was once someone is past that point and they want to know where to go from there its a massive investment.

    The more that LSS print heroes and cards which reward not playing specific cards (Mech, new Prism, Riptide), the cheaper the game gets to get into, I feel? Like, especially with a lot of staples being class specific, whilst you do still get cards that are on the pricier side (and asking for $100 for footsteps is still rough for a new player), they tend to not climb nearly as high as some of the generic staples do! Not to mention, a lot of the generic staples decrease in price to a degree, because of these changes? It's really nice!!!
    I do think something like commoner becoming more openly supported could help a lot with pricing issues though - especially if they did something similar to the blitz decks, as like a commoner battle box thing? Could even do them with the classic heroes!

    Lol im sorry but as a MTG player all of my mana base combined doesnt cost nearly $120 for 1 deck vs 4 copies of a $100 ... And you need what like 46 or 56 more cards? If you wanna bling out and play the most expensive deck, that's another story.

    • @pheano
      @pheano  3 месяца назад +1

      fab only has one 100$ card you need multiple of and its 3 not 4
      the mana base of nadu is literally 400$ not counting and The One Rings you need. I think this is very comparable since even if you stop playing nadu you'll want to hold onto your mana base to play your next deck in those colors.

    The bitter truth is that FaB is the most expensive card game when considering the main constructed format, according to the average price of the top 5 decks in major tournaments.

    I like how people who say that FAB isn't expensive almost always compare it to MTG. Do non-MTG players/TCGs not exist for you guys?

      I meant more non MTG/YGO/Pokemon TCGs
      but I agree will your sentiment- LSS needs to push people to play at their local LGS at a more casual level
      There used to be a bustling Armory scene when they gave XP required to play in large events, but now that Armories don't, there is little to no reason for people to play at them
      So with the mostly dead local scene and the high barrier to entry for a good deck that wont go 0-x, it's not a feasible ask for most people just to dip their toes into playing the game
      FAB has the same issue with One Piece wherein people only care about the big tournaments with valuable prizes, but OP has the backing of the most popular IP in the current century while FAB doesnt

      I’d argue that because of the low variance in FAB it is one of the less pay to win tcgs out there. I had a local complain about how fab is p2w and that tunic let me combo them, and then I pointed out it was blitz, less than 6 turns in (so only 1 tunic use), and I could have run like 3 other cards and was just too lazy to switch out a card since I didn’t know where my threadbare tunic/blossom of spring/or the wizard common from from uprising were since they are cheap and in my bulk, and tunic was with my CC deck and easy to find.
      I feel like people complaining about this stuff would ignore it and be salty anyway, but I’ve been tempted to do just a budget challenge and play low cost decks at armories or on talishar vs randoms to prove that a decent player can win on a budget in FAB. My locals is not a strong scene, and so the games are more casual, but if the experienced players don’t sandbag and play meme stuff then even in commoner and other formats where no price point influences the game, it is the same 2-3 people in the finals every week.

      Honestly, mostly any TCG can be Pay to Win. The Person who spent more money for Boosters or Single cards will have a bigger Pool of cards and can optimize it. Just spending 50$ will probably not got so much xD

    Magic is not an argument since Hasbro is openly saying that the tournament scene is diying and that Magic is now a multiplayer casual game. If FaB cost as much as diying MTG format, that's not a good sign. The cost of competing should be compared to Pokemon, Yugioh or Lorcana.
