When I hear this I’m automatically teleported to mid 80s warm summers, 10 years old, sitting in the car with my dad. The big C took him away at age 56 all those years ago. It never gets easier folks.
But it was 1978 only hit the charts second time around after some radio play by Anne Nightingale on her Sunday radio one show. First time it failed to chart. And the follow up Lady Writer didn’t take off either
When discussions come up on who the guitar greats are of all time, this man's name is left off of too many lists. He's right up there with the best! What a unique sound he created. You can spot a Mark Knoffler song right away even if you're hearing that song for the first time.
He is one of the best I agree, but you can trace the influence of Hank Marvin of The Shadows and Chet Atkins in his own style. I think of Mark Knopfler as Hank Marvin on steroids!
You should check out the genre Desert Blues. It's played by the Tuareg people in upper-west Africa. Given the politics of the times, and how hard it was to get music, Dire Straights is one of their 3 major musical influences. This man's music inspired an evolution in music for and entire culture. Look up Tinariwen.
I adore this song like no other. They made great music, Mark Knopfler is a genius. His solo work is amazing. Great songwriter, best guitarist ever and a fantastic unique singing voice. But the Sultans Of Swing have always been my fave of Dire Straits and will always be forever. Bless you, Mark and thank you for the music.
I cant avoid watching/listening to this song forever and ever. Is there any better than this Mark Knopfler guitar magic player? Live forever Dire Straits!
So glad i grew up in these wonderful times. Mark the greatest. Here he swings his body, lots of hair. At nearly 70 he is still the best. Long live Mark Knopler.
Dire Straits are still one of the best "guitar bands" to this day imo. Better than most I can think of. Knophler had such a unique style of playing. Even to this day I've never heard anyone come close to how he plays. He fills those bars with note after note. No time to rest either hand playing this. 🤣 Or the vast majority of their songs. Awesome. Fleetwood Mac's Buckingham is a brilliant pick guitarist, but they're nothing like Straits.
The song that marked my indenpendence as a listener. Before, I was very much conditioned (and I do appreciate it though) by my aunt and uncle musical tastes. Then, one day leaving university, ages 17, to the bus I heard THIS. I walked back and went straight into the record shop to find out who was this amazing band and amazing song. I bought the record there and then, I had to walk all the way home as I had no money left...:-)...good times. I also developed a crush on Mark Knopfler, which lingers to these days. :-))))
I was at the Bottom Line in NYC the night they debuted in the U.S. And a few years later when I had front row seats for Dire Straits at the Capitol Theatre in Passaic NJ, Mark played the great solo ending about 5 feet from my face. Amazing, I still get a chill.
This performance is all audio syncing with the studio recording, but am I the only one that notices that the audio is tuned slightly flatter than the studio version? Not complaining, it still sounds great, and seeing these guys live must have been amazing.
All music 70s and 80s all the greatest musicians broadcast the world 🌎 wide and we were blasting on hi fi 🎶 marantz in 80s i was 19 and we enjoyed a lot's without cellphones 📱 writing ✍️ letters and landphones and my father was serving for British navy HMS ship F119 🚢 in Mombasa navel base and zanzibar Africa.
This really zaps me back in time to hearing this when i was a young child...i can still see my dad really happy listening to it jamming along with his own guitar...he used to play this a lot and also in the gallery by dire straits...Thanks for great memories! Sonique 🎶🤗
I've had a crush o Mark Knopler since as I was 17 and Sultans of Swing wasplaying in a record shop in Rio de Janeiro. It seduced me there and I bought the CD...52 years gone by and I stilllove them (well...him...😊)
Dire Straits ( the late 1970's line---up,band members and band mates) are: The legendary Mark Knopfler---lead vocals and lead guitar the incredible John Illsley---bass guitar the gifted David Knopfler---rhythm guitar and the amazing Pick Withers---drums and percussion
Shout out to guitar George, he knows all the chords.
If only David did :P

Its all in the web
@@nazderinkalyoncu1297 That is own hair.
Guitar George might not have been able to afford a new guitar with his daytime job moving refrigerators and color TVs, but at least he got his MTV.
One of the greatest songs of the rock era. Gives the guitar a pedestal to stand on.
And they cut the end off 🙄 I'll go elsewhere to watch it.
This tune had it all
Has* it all
and even more!
including fading when the magic starts....
is it half step down? I am so confused

Simply the best....belong in hall of fame....long overdue....they made it
My daughter's favorite song and she's 23 yrs Young! This is for you Kiara 😍
The Dire Straits began their world breakthrough in the Netherlands! This was their first hit!
Sultans of swing was a top 10 song worldwide.
@@tubester4567 but first in the Netherlands and Belgium (second half of 1978), (over) half a year before the UK and the USA (1979)

You always know when it's Mark Knopfler playing. Unique, distinctive sound! Ah...back in the days when music was real.
Serious music!!!!!!!
Yes, when music was music.
I'm speechless. Great band. Love them
listening to the song somewhere in 1979 at a party became my favorite and stays up to this day!

he's not actually pretending! There is the real sound of this recording where they were actually playing but replaced it with studio audio
