Being Finnish I really liked this dicussion and the guest brought up important points. Not only did he explain correctly why Finland sought to join NATO, but he also brought up the vital point of what effect Finland and (soon) Sweden joining will have on the security of the Baltic countries. There have been fears that Russia would see the Baltics as weak spot in NATO that could be cut off and taken before NATO can react. Now that's no longer possible.
Finland no longer needs to worry about potentially facing Russia alone and what used to be weak flank for NATO is now a strong point. Everyone except Putin wins.

What does it mean for Finland from Finland's economy and standard of living of ordinary people point of view?
Finland so far is one of the few countries in the world where the country's population has grown steadily every year since 1970. It will be interesting to see if the population growth in Finland will continue in a few years, for example, in 5 years, after Finland joined NATO in April 2023.

@@FirstNameLastName-hy1pf is probably Russian bot but I leave reply in case someone wonders about this five years from now.
Finland's fertility has been low for a long time and population growth depends on immigration. NATO has no effect on those things. Economically the membership also doesn't matter since Finland already spends the NATO target of 2%+ on defence and would be spending it regardless if we were members or not since Russia isn't going to go anywhere from our border.

The Ukraine war on the other hand, is now over a year old and NATO is only now starting to supply it with some serious firepower. They really didn't lift a finger for the first couple of months until the Ukrainians proved they would fight and ever since, it's only been penny packets to keep them from losing. This was very accurate, but one important piece is missing. In Dec. 2021 Russia made the statement that Finland cannot join NATO, and if it tried, would face military consequences. If Finland had accepted that, it would have meant that Finland accepts that it is not a sovereign state, but has to follow a foreign policy dictated by Russia. That was impossible to be accepted.
Therefore Finland would have joined NATO at some point even if the Russian invasion of Ukraine had never happened. The invasion just made the joining happen faster.
The reason of joining was fundamentally not the fear that Russia might invade Finland some day - that could of course have happened any year even before, and that is why we have the 900 000 reserve; nothing new in that. But the fact that Russia tried to stop Finland from making decisions of its own foreign and security policy was unheared of. Finland was not even planning to join NATO, but now it really had no choice - either accept Russian rule out of fear, or join NATO and show who makes the decisions in Finland; the Finnish people.
The invasion of Ukraine also caused a strong feeling of protest in Finland. We could not remain neutral about the Russian army killing civilians in Ukraine. It was clear on which side we were on.

And those militaries designed to fight what used to be called "brush wars" back in the bad old colonial days. The vast border between Russia and Finland is 90% lakes with bogs and forests in between and little strategic value. The only important point of conflict is the Karelian Isthmus.
