He paid the premium for those contracts. He is buying the right to purchase those shares at that strike price. With it being 2 years out, I think his intention is that as soon as it goes up a bit from the Santa effect He will sell the contracts.
Buying LEAPS options is not the same as selling covered calls and collecting a premium. When I buy a LEAPS contract, I have to pay a premium to obtain the contract.
@CalltoLeap buying the LEAPS option is lowering your "at risk" investment. Where as buying the shares outright you assume the full risk of what you paid
Have you looked into direct indexing that has tax loss harvesting? I just put $300K in one for this year to keep less money going to the government. Its an amazing strategy!
Overall you still need to be right, but you have plenty of time to be right. At what point would you decide to give up on LEAPS if AMZN has bad couple quarters of earnings?
I will exit out if my LEAPS fall around 50% of its value. It's usually difficult for the contract to break even since the contract now has to grow 100% to get back to it's original price.

I would probably start with CSPs first with around a $140 strike. But that's just me though!
TD has same “option” to put cash in eg SWVXX at around 5% and yes, still use it as collateral for CSPs
