- The BMW community is full of individuals upgrading their cars and often swapping in different engines from different chassis. I give my thoughts on the best engine swaps you can do in your BMW. My personal swapped cars: E46 330 Swapped Wagon/Touring, E46 S54 Swapped Sedan, and LS3 Swapped E46 Sedan. The best swap is the one that meets all of your needs and goals for your car. The S54 is the best swap for purists who want more power in their older BMW. The S54 has a lot of aftermarket forced induction options for more power as well along with the ability to use factory electronics to make it standalone. LS engines have always been swapped in to any make and model and rightfully so. They are available by the dozen and have so many aftermarket components available to make them standalone. There are so many variations and they are cheap and easy to modify. Feel free to comment down below if you would like for me to go more in depth with a specific swap into a specific car.

Did an m54b30 zhp swap on my e46 325i, easy swap, did it in a few days, took a couple of weeks to get all the parts to refresh the engine and 1 year and 11k miles later no regrets 👌
I did the same on my 328i...still using my 328 ECU but need a 330 tune...need help with how to go about this
@@maxcliff91 I believe the 328i tune is good for the b30 engine. Unless you really want to swap to MS43 ECU to actually use the b30 tune but that's alot of work and expensive
@@Darkstar-pk3lb i haven't driven the car yet since we are currently doing rear subframe reinforcement, but the engine idles very well and does not seem to have any misfires but that may not be the same when we get to drive it. Swapping the ECU will be too expensive and very involving.
@@maxcliff91 Hmmmm, other than those two options I'm not sure what else you could do.
I would assume that the car would "learn itself" because of how similar the b28 and b30 are and would compensate the difference.

I'm LS swapping my E39 and can say it's not that bad once you have mounts, headers and oil pan. Holley Terminator X runs all your engine /trans needs while the normal bmw body harnesses control lights and other accessories.

I also did an M54B30 swap on my E46 325i, I changed pretty much everything such as piston rings, con-rod bearings, seals, valve adjuster, cooling system, vanos rebuild and also adding Dinan Cold Air Intake as an upgrade because I can't use the old Intake box due to the difference between the place where the MAF sensor sits as the M54B30 MAF sensor is quite bigger compared to the 325i ones. The money I spent was equivalent to US$4000.

I put a 2002 s54 into a 2005 ZHP. Had to change a bunch of wires around but it wasnt that hard. Watching your channel helped a ton

I have an absolutely crazy idea... Since BMW is known for straight-6 power, and S54 is limited in displacement, how about swapping a TVR Speed Six engine into an e46? This engine, though known for unreliability, has proven aftermarket fixes and comes at 4 liter/400bhp from factory with great tuning potential. The combination will make the ultimate BMW following the classic formula (straight 6, NA power, lightweight, manual).
My dream is to swap a S85B50 V10 into my e46, I know its hard but I'll eventually make it possible

@@F.B.I.0 Really freaking good honestly. Done a ton of work to it because it's a drift car now. The motor runs incredibly strong for 240k. She lives on the limiter on the track and just moves like an absolute hoss since I upgraded the diff and finally powered through all the crap the previous owners did.

@@F.B.I.0 For sure, see a lot of E36's where I'm at because less electrical to deal with. We had an event yesterday and the car ran remarkably strong all day and we absolutely annihilated some tires. Work was WELL worth it.

Not that difficult since mostly everything is plug and play, coding/wiring is not overly complicated either.

Holley has made the LS swap so easy. Get the engine mounted and run some wires. As long as the car doesn't need the engine and body stuff to talk like GM and their BCMs its plug and play.
LS1 for my e90 once the n52 goes out but so far it has been bulletproof

S54 into an E46 sedan for sure, I have plans to swap my ZHP after 6 years of ownership. The cost of a supercharger is the cost of an S54 with decent miles.
My car is a 6sp so I know I can get an upgraded clutch and flywheel one time, swap subframes, etc, but I want to understand the exhaust combination needed for a sedan first & the coding side of things. I want it to be turn key, DSC works properly and the sport button to work as well lol
330i 6 speed is different to M3 6 speed, be ware :) Sport button is 2 wires into ECU from the button bar x) DSC just a bit of coding nothing more.

Hi Jason. I'm from Malaysia. In my country, a lot of E46, E36 and E39 are using Toyota's 1JZ engines as they are widely available. There are also a few with 2JZ swapped in their engine bay. A few rare ones have done the full Alpina 4.4l/4.8l conversions as well. Love to know your views on each options abovementioned.

S54 into an e36 coupe chassis would be my pick.
The chassis is solid and doesn't suffer from structural weakness in the rear axel carrier panel like the e46 chassis does - and it's lighter, so would give a much better power-to-weight ratio.
The e36 actually has similar issues with the rear axle carrier panel. The s54 would be right at home in the e36, but the chassis will still need reinforcing throughout.

Great video, I’m planning to do an S54 into my E46 325i wagon. There seams to be a bit of modifications regarding the M3 Quad exhaust muffler which requires me to remove the spare tire from the wagon to install this muffler..I’ll also would have to modify the rear bumper, fusing both the E46 and the M3 together to make it work. Would love to get your thoughts on this.
You would also DEFINITELY need to the the rear subframe reinforment.

@@scourgeofbloodclan3986 to just put the swap in the car would be every bit of 15 grand... took about 2 years for me to finish. If i knew what i was doing i wouldnt have been so long. Electronics wasnt bad cuz i had a buddy finish it up for me that is 1000 times smarter than me

Honestly serious about doing both. B58 in the wagon and turbo the s54. Probably won't happen for a while since we have 3 other project cars waiting to be built first! Maybe if we win the lottery then we can crank everything out quicker lol

Hey, great video! I'm 17 and I live in Italy, where driving age is 18 and for the first year after u get ur licence u have to drive a car that doesn't exceed 95hp. I'd like to get an E36 but the only one I could drive would be the 318tds and an almost 30yo Diesel engine isn't gonna pass emission tests anyway. So I was thinking about an engine swap. My best bet looks to be the BMW N47D16A (95hp 175 lb-ft l4 diesel, found in the 114d). My question is: is there any way to bolt the N47 to the e36's transmission or would I need to get the Getrag GS6-17 transmission that comes as stock in the F20 114d? If I do need the GS6-17, how could I connect it to the e36's drive shaft? And finally, seeing as I could get the engine in good shape for roughly 1500$ and the transmission if necessary for around 500$, how much could I realistically expect to spend? Thx in advance to anyone who read my question n wants to answer
I was looking to do the swap thing on my 05 manual wagon 325i M54. I have tools and shop space, but after doing the math it was better to supercharge the B25 for 290 HP with a VF kit for $4500. More power than a B30 and less costly than S54. Got 10Kmiless on it, other than few tweaks, it works well and I only lost 1 mpg. Did some roll races with my friends M54 M3 and they are even from 5mph to 55mph when I run out of 2nd gear.

Hello ladies and gents I have a big question. I love the video I appreciate it🙂….But this is real serious so I own a 1998 BMW 540i/6, with the Non-Vanos M62B44 V8 engine, which is OBD2. I have bought myself an M60B40 from a previous 1994 BMW 540i/6…..so my question is since both The M60 and M62 are SO similar..while both being non vanos. Can this job be done? Is it easy? Is it impossible? Help😂
a standalone will be the best move as it's non vanos, if not, i don't know, the engine management from the e39 won't work with the m60 as the m62 has more stuff suck as knock sensors, overall a more modern management
in terms of fitment i think it will be easy as they are super similar

you should stick to E46 and try al different new and old engines ,like, s36b36/38 or n54/55b30 or b48b20 or b58b30 and the new and old v8s,,heck why not try the new v12 tt engine..that would be sick.even the barra would be nice to see.

I’m assembling components for an E90 LS swap, and there’s a guy selling a good kit but his CAN adapter box won’t support a stock LS/GM ECU, which is a big no-no here in TX for emissions, which uses an ODB2 scan. So I’m starting with the electronics, particularly the CAN bus support for things like start/stop, tach, etc. Do you happen to know anything about E90 CAN ids/data?
How did it turn out and how were you able to pass emissions with the domestic motor in an euro car?

Hi, thanks for sharing, awesome channel! Here is a question: I crashed my 2001 325 ci, the engine has 110K and it is solid, and still running ok after the accident (car is gone). Now I got a 2000 323 ci, engine came with the intake manifold in the trunk, supposedly engine is ok, but I have my doubts, the rest of the car is solid. If the engine is not good, can I swap the M52 (323) with my M54 (325), but use the same intake manifold with the throttle body drive by wire, but in the M54, or it won't fit? Thank you!! If the block is exactly the same, and they are not electronics in the block, it should work, right? I might be crazy!! I just don't want to by another engine, oh boy... Thank you again!!

definitely do it. stick is so much more fun and rewarding to drive. It’s not that difficult just a lot of grunt work. plenty of forums and vids documenting it. Go for it!
Definitely a good idea. This channel right here taught me how to manual swap. Did it in a couple weeks with very little time per day. Included removal from my parts car and installation. No regrets at all 20k miles later!

That E46 with S54 you did sounds like fun. How hard or easy to find S54 engine, trans, differential, wirings (sounds like a whole car). Cost wise seems impractical. The big advantage is still 4 door sedean, lower insurance, etc. How hard or easy to find S54 engine, trans, rear end, wirings, shaft drive to fit in the 330i? How's cost of labor? How many weeks? I bought a whole donor car and it took me a little over a week. I actually documented my first S54 swap on e46fanatics. Labor and parts cost all depends on how deep you decide to go with the swap and upgrades/maintenance. It can be as little as 10k-25k (parts and labor) when all is said and done.

I was wondering if u can tell me pls the differences between facelift and non facelift, biased engines and body upgrade. I know that fl come with m54 and most of the nfl with m52. About rear subframe that crack on e46 and other problems, are they fixed in fl version? Suspension and brakes, do they get any upgrades? And how aboud electrical systems like dsc and asc. The last thing is about options, is fl gettin more options? Sry for my english, i m doing my best. Thank you in advance

there’s no point considering you could just buy an e90 m3. with the s54 it’s putting it in a sedan/wagon which was never an option.
Hi Jason this is Sanjay. I have a 2004 Convertible SMG M3. I can use your help. I love the car but it was parked for a very long time and now that i have started driving it again it is acting up. I love the SMG feel and would like to keep it. Can this be your next project. I love this 2004 Laguna Seca Blue M3 with SMG and Cinnamon red interior. Hope you pick this project. I am quite handy but i believe this is beyond my skill level and crawling under cars getting scary as i am getting old err.
1. issue it slips when I am trying to accelerate, if driving normally all gears change without any issue.
2. some times it is Jeryky when start moving from stand still. I was told it is because of broken detents on a gear box.
3. during summer on very hot days it drops out of gear on its own but when I re-engage it works right away.
