People who aren't from the bay area or northern california dont realize that's the standard for winter. Your traveling over a mountain range called the sierras roughly 7000 ft above sea level. Amazing how many people go up 50 and 80 unprepared without chains or snow gear. At that altitude you get stuck up their you can get buried in snow in a matter of minutes. If you pick the right time of day 50 can be the most beautiful drive you will ever see.

I’ve driven that road…you are always hyper-alert!! In any weather!! The cliffs are very visible once you round the Echo Summet curve!

Think about how beautiful the Lake Tahoe area will look under blue skies. I've already made reservations for Lake Tahoe and Yosemite in the Spring.

I used to live in South Lake and Echo summit always makes me a little nervous, even without record snowfall.

That's nuts. Looks more like an off road trail than a highway. I guess if you break down your on your own? Thanks for sharing and be careful.

Halfway through this video that is a sheer cliff on the right 800 feet down.

Yeah and I don't think the new-to-towners realize that there's a cliff at all when driving in those conditions 😅 Kind of funny now, but in the moment it's a bit concerning... 😅 But of course on a sunny day or even a clear-sky evening, you can see the cliff very well! 😂

Driving roads in conditions like that the biggest threat if an accident or road closure and you get STUCK and no where to go. Police wont let traffic through and you sit for HOURS.

The Winter Olympics were held in Tahoe years ago.
It is not uncommon for it to snow in MANY areas of California. When we lived in the desert of Lancaster Ca it snowed two years, and once in the San Fernando Valley. You could virtually go to the beach one day, and skiing the next in California. Both on the same day if you worked your day just right.

Of course, being by far one of the most geographically diverse states in the US. Our mountains are known for snow! But even the foothills between 2500-4000ft elevation can see 1-5’ of snow.
Even Sacramento has seen flakes fall and perhaps a light dusting once or twice in modern history (city elevation is around 25ft above sea level).

So many people from the Bay area or Sacramento (flat landers) go up in winter in 2 wheel drive, dont own chains, donr know how to put them on, wearing flip flops and shorts, get caught in a highway shutdown that can last 20 hours. No food and no warm clothing. And cant turn around.
They soend $75k for that big Suburban or Tahoe but didn't check off the $1,500 for 4x4 option, or didnt get winter rated tires that can traverse in snow. And still go at highway speeds becauee they have ABS. And end up in a ditch waiting for a tow truck and calling their insurance company.
I had lived 20 years in the foothils of the Sierras in Aurburn and saw this every year.

Although I would say I think it’s not generally the person’s fault, I would blame overall society for not having enough education about cars and car safety. Probably should be a bunch of courses on car/car safety in high schools instead of all the crazy stuff they’re teaching that a lot of times doesn’t have practical use in later life

I think we were all thinking that whether subconsciously or not! For me I have a busy life and it was in plans anyways to drive over the mountain. I don’t ever want to do this drive in this way again. I have other videos to post of the experience and how weird it was
