I was only able to catch the last 15 minutes or so of the livestream, but I did go back to the beginning and watched from there. I never new that Romania was so Anti-Semitic in it's past. I knew that the government during the war was Pro Nazi, but did not know about its role in The Holocaust. I have learned so much in the last two days thanks to WW2TV inviting such people as Adrian Cioflâncă to school us. He seems to be a fine scholar who is using his skills to educate, but also to memorialize one of the greatest tragedies of history. It is so relevant to today. Let us all never forget and always remind ourselves and others of the past.

A fine example is the excuse for crimes against humanity that bolshevik jews perpetrated in russia.
The excuse is that they were "oppressed" in russia at the time and saw the rise of bolshevism as an opportunity to fight back and what they did was completely justified.
That is a horrible horrible lie.
First of all "oppression" is when you're a captive. Whether by the plight of slave labor, or a systematic process of cleansing like the camps in poland were.

I finally was able to view this on Thursday. I found this very very hard to watch. My maternal grandparents came here to Wales (United Kingdom) in the early thirties from The Sudetenland in the thirties, and I remember as a child, in the early sixties, sitting of Granpa Jimmie's knee and he telling me of the journey he made through Europe to reach safety here. The year he died he showed me the pistol he had carried in case he and Nana Roza were stopped. They were Jews.
Paul, I thank you for bringing this series of vitally important talks to us. As is usual, you have had some fantastic speakers. This is an important part of "The Story of WWII" and we often lose sight of the unspeakable evil behind the Axis Powers.

Excellent. One question. My impression was that from the late 1930s Romania began to distinguish between the Jews of the Regat (pre-WWI Romania) and those of the territories gained after WWI (particularly Moldova). It was the latter who suffered loss of citizenship and most of the killings, while those of the Regat survived largely intact. This led to the anomalous situation that Romania was both responsible for the second largest number of Jewish deaths and for the survival of the largest Jewish community left in Europe. Germany had marked Romania's Jews down for transport to the death camps, but by the time this was due it was late 1942. They seem to have survived for two reasons - the tide of war was turning and the very nationalist Antonescu resented German interference in what he regarded as an internal Romanian matter. Is this an accurate assessment?

Hi Paul, thank you so much for another very important show. Adrian is a wonderful guest and I look forward to hearing him again. Antisemitism is a cancer, and the growth rate of its cells is scary. It’s a deep seated hatred, one for which I have a strange fascination, in part because of their denials of everything and how they twist documented history saying that it was the Germans who were the victims of Jewish atrocities, and all the photos were “staged.” All the death camp scenes and documentaries were Hollywood actors that appeared to be skinny but were just “slender” and made to appear as though they were starving when actually it was the Jews who were well fed and they were starving the Germans. All the records, the Germans were meticulous to a fault with their documentation of numbers; names, places - documented history that has absolutely no room for error, but still they will turn it all upside down and say that six million Jews started WWII, had the death camps, enslaved the entire population of Germany and Europe - and Russia - it’s unbelievable. Hatred does such extraordinary things.
Adrian is wonderful guest and I look forward to him returning to your show. Thank you both so very much. I really appreciate the work that goes into the show and in the field. There’s so much more to be discovered, and all these people’s histories need to be found and properly documented. God bless ~~~

I'm so glad to see you've tackled this subject. Unfortunately in Romania there is still much denial and cover up about this aspect of our history, and much worship (even in official circles) of Antonescu and his regime. Adrian did mention this aspect, but I'm afraid he didn't get across the extent of it. Sure, there are some efforts being made to start a discussion about the Holocaust in Romania, but they are met with huge opposition and skepticism from the general population. I saw a couple of commenters here being offended about what was presented, but i asure you, if this were spoken in the Romanian language, the comment section would have been full of them. Still, i'm glad that this is being talked about more and more

No my dear this is a big lie exactly like today in Gaza. check the newspaper „Jewish Telegraphic Agency”, in August 1959 they published the following news: Jerusalem, August 23 (JTA) Israel Ministry of Finances announces that The West German government has agreed to pay compensation to the families of persons killed by nazis in Jassy, Rumania June 1941. Once again dear people please check this matter, we Romanians have been under this menace for a long time, they obligated us many times to give them full citizenship and rights but they entered our country without legal papers, we have many censored writers and politicians (starting the years 1850 to present day ) who cover this matter in detail, they want the Nord of Romania more exactly Moldova and the territories from Ukraine that belongs to Romania to be theirs, to make new Jewish state exactly like in Palestine today. And yes you are right if this was in Romanian you would have here much more comments here because we know what was happening and much more we know why we got in this position, we know about the Jews that took power in Romania after the year 1945 until 1957, which kills more then 500.000 Romanians in prisons because they don t want communism, remember here Pitesti experiment (Alexandr Solzhenitin said of the Pitesti Experiment - the largest and most aggressive brainwashing program through torture in the Eastern Bloc - that it was "the greatest barbarity of the contemporary world"). Once again you want more details about this please write here and with glad I will give you many more details. A very very strange thing happened in 2010 , Israeli President Shimon Peres( wich it is Sephardic jew not Ashkenazi) thanks to Romania because we helped more than 400.000 during the Second World War, we have the video footage if you want it.

Romanian here. We don't like being occupied by foreigners (duh) but not all foreigners are equal. The fact that the post-war trials were done at the behest of and with the deep involvement of the *much hated* Russians does quite a number on their popular legitimacy to say the least, regardless of the veracity of the facts presented. If it would have been the Americans, we would be considerably more receptive to them today. After the fall of Ceaușescu, some members of Antonescu's government were officially rehabilitated. As was the Romanian counterpart to Eichmann. Those trials stand today, even as a mere formality for all practical purposes, simply because this is part of the price Romania has to pay to be part of EU/NATO.

Thank you for this information. I am interested to know, that as a historian, Adrian would not include "cause and effect" in the actions of the Romanians and of the Jews. Since this approach is not used both the Romanians and the Jews write a one side history and the result is that a listener to this program gets a one sided history. The period covered in this report does not list the general make up of the political, geographic, religious and social make up of the Moldova, Muntenia and Transilvania the impact of Russia, Ottoman Empire and the Austro-Hungerian and the influence and impact that France, Germany and England had over Romania. I trust Adrian Cioflanca would give an honest report and NOT only make it a Romania vs Jews because that is NOT the case. The complicated complexity needs a good and comprehensive understating for a fair and honest evaluation.

Ok, but here we are talking about the Holocaust in Romania, not about injustices perpetrated on the Romanian people. I'm sure you can find discussions about that as well in other places, but this video is about something different. The fact that you come here and change the subject gives the impression you are denying or minimizing the atrocities committed by the Romanian people, and frankly that's just disrespectful towards all the tens of thousands of victims. Other than that, the less said about your discourse being borrowed from neo-fascist elements in present day Romania, the better.
